Daughtry appreciation thread

Updating this thread for the 2012 Break The Spell tour. Who's got the record? What are your favorite songs? Anyone going to a show or two? I'm hoping they have VIP Meet & Greets again this tour. I missed the VIP last time because I waited too long Sad

Comments (81)

I know it's a long shot but I have two tickets available for the Daughtry show at the NJ PAC in Newark Wednesday 4/25, floor row J. Face value. Anyone interested?

Thanks!

karenc3, I'm planning on going to the Boca Raton show. It's an outdoor theater, which in mid-April, should be perfect! And I actually got my husband to agree to go with me. This is so rare as he is not a fan of my music at all but it's on the weekend AND it's my birthday, so he couldn't refuse. Eye-wink Plus, we're going with another couple so it will be bearable for him.

Can't wait to hear the new music live. I'm hoping he throws in Drown In You, his song from the Batman soundtrack. I kinda doubt it because he'll be in full-on Break The Spell promo mode, but I love that song. Wish it had been on BTS.

I'm hoping to go to the Foxwoods show. I saw him there last time too. Hoping to do VIP too, if I can get it Smiling

With Daughtry's new record and the announcement of their Break The Spell tour with openers Mike Sanchez and SafetySuit, I am resurrecting this thread. I will also update the OP since it's very Leave This Town centric.

Thanks, ItsMyTime, for posting your version of Open Up Your Eyes. That song is just so poignant and as you said, "hauntingly beautiful." Now I'm especially anxious to hear any Cook/Hodges co-write on the new album....actually can't wait to hear any and all songs on the new album.

MargMom, thanks for coming back and posting your comments. Open Up Your Eyes is hauntingly beautiful. Dave Hodges had a hand in co-writing (as well as Ben Moody) so I am super excited to hear what Cook and Hodges have come up with!

I have an acoustic video of Chris singing Open Up Your Eyes from the House of Blues last year. There's quite a bit of crowd noise, but it's so intense and beautiful, you might enjoy it.

You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand

It's My TIme, you had mentioned awhile back that Daughtry's cd was available for a special sale on Amazon and I purchased it then. You then later mentioned that you liked his song "Call Your Name". I appreciated both recommendations so I'm now checking back to mention a recommendation of mine. I was listening to his cd while traveling on a 12 hour road trip. I was familiar with most of the singles that were out but my road trip gave me the opportunity to really listen to all the songs. There was one song that piqued my interest..."Open Up Your Eyes". I couldn't quite grasp the full meaning on just a quick listen so I really spent some time listening to the lyrics....the music had already captured my interest. Oh. My. Gosh! When I realized what the lyrics meant, I just started to cry. I really don't think I've been so touched by a song since I realized the "twist" in David's Permanent. Now whenever I listen to the album, it's Open Up Your Eyes that I listen to first and then hit replay again and again. So thanks for your part in helping me to get back to listening to Chris again.

EPIC duet. Kelly Clarkson joins Chris Daughtry for acoustic Fast Car in Nashville.

If you missed Daughtry on Idol this week or just want to see it again...

Daughtry sings September on American Idol

You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand

Chris was good on Idol. I think September may be my Favorite Daughtry song. Funny how he gets nervous.

Daughtry played September on American Idol, Top 4 tonight. Top 4 coincidence? I think not. He was on Top 4 last year as well when he debuted No Surprise. I think Idol likes to bring him back to Top 4 since he was eliminated that week during Season 5. No wonder the poor guy gets nervous (see tweet below)...

CHRIS_Daughtry Why oh why do I get soooo nervous on that Idol stage!??!!

Here is his performance if you want to watch it again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGhszl-sc0U

You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand

So I went to the show last night in Seattle at the WAMU theater located under the rafters at Qwest field where the Seahawks play. The venue holds around 6000 or so. It was about 90% sold out I think. Met a David fan and she was in row 11, I was row 9, we had great seats and she bought hers on Stub Hub just a few days before. It was a good crowd. I would say it had mixed demographic. Anywhere from teenagers to older folks like myself.

CAVO was the first opener and they were good. The lead singer could sing and the band played well. I did not recognize any of their songs but I enjoyed the band. They had a pretty good sound and I liked the last the song they did the best called "Let It Go"

Lifehouse was next. This is an excellant band. The lead singer has lots of charisma. Their music was definitely more HAC oriented than CAVO. The lead singer came down into the crowd. In another part of the show he left the stage so his back up singer/ bassist could sing lead on one song, he came back at the end of the song. Also I found out that he grew up in a little town close to mine called "Port Hadlock" so he won me over with that. I recognized three of their songs. Their set was longer than Cavo and there were a lot of Lifehouse fans in the audience.

Daughtry started the show with these huge white curtains around the stage and a light show behind the curtains it was cool, then the curtains dropped and they started to play. Chris played guitar for part of the set. My favorite song was September. No Surprise was also very good live even though I was not sure if it was the best single on the record. He had the fans sing the part of the Chorus from "Over Your" He sang an acoustic version of "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins. One of his encore songs was "Home" and he had the lead singer from Lifehouse Jason Wade sing it with him. Sadly I missed the very last song in the encore because I had to run to the ferry, it ended up I could have stayed because the ferry was late but I did not know that. LOL Here are a few youtubes;

No Surprise Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAWHU782EIg
No Surprise Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV1yikkEzhk
In The Air Tonight part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZQLui0XiMw
In The Air Tonight Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbzfy5DNIPQ
Home with Jason Wade from Lifehouse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOpXi-oloVk

It was a great show. All three bands were good. I had great seats and ran into a David fan there. I went to see Nickelback the other night. They were good. Chad was very chatty and he was salty and used the F word constantly. He joked about alcohol and pot and lots of sexual jokes. Daughtry's show was very clean not one performer cursed. But there was not very much banter from any of these bands. I think that Chad and David Cook must be unusual in the amount of banter they have at their shows. I prefer David's banter to Chad's which is off putting to an old gal like myself : )

Wow! This is big...

You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand

I am going to see Daughtry on May 9th and will post a recap here. I am excited. I watched the cellcast or whatever it was and it looks like a really good show. : )

Glad to see you down here sylvanaire. As you can tell I talk to myself a lot in this thread Eye-wink

Yup, Chris definitely sings from his throat which is not good for the longevity of his career. As a result, he doesn't sound as clean live as he does in the studio (unlike David). But his shows are just electric. I've seen him in the small club type venue and the arena venue and he had both crowds in a frenzy. His shows are very high energy.

You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand

I'm watching Idol Rewind in the TV Guide channel, and it is on several times all weekend on my cable provider. I remember watching S5 because it was the first year I had cable, before that I had satellite service, and didn't get any Network shows. Elliott was my favorite that year, although I could see why Chris was popular, he was never for me. The thing I remember most about Chris, was the episode with David Foster and Andrea Bocelli, when they wanted him to lie down on the floor, so he could sing from his diaphragm, instead of his throat. You'd think they had questioned his manhood, lol. And in the Daughtry special, when they interviewed him about that segment, he was still saying "I'm not doing that again", like it was some crazy thing done to humiliate him, instead of help him. Because he totally sings from his throat, even leaving aside the vibrato, which I don't care for, it always sounds like he's straining when he sings, and I find him unpleasant to listen to, live. Somehow they smooth that all out in the studio, and there are several songs on Leave this Town that I like, but it would never be worth it to me to go to a concert of his, even though he hits all the notes. I'm happy for his success, though. He seems like a good guy, from what I can tell.

In case you missed the awesome live stream of the Baltimore Daughtry show last night, it is being replayed at 8pm tonight. Go to daughtryofficial.com and register. So worth it, 17 songs including a 4-song encore!! BTW 37,000 watched the live feed last night.

You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand

It'sMyTime, thanks for posting the Idol Rewind. I've watched all the seasons of AI but watching those videos took me back to Season 5. I had never voted for anyone through the years (except for season 7) but I can still remember the feeling when Chris was voted off. It was so weird to see that it just wasn't me...the audience also seemed stunned. At the time, I swore I would never watch another Idol show. Thankfully, I changed my mind....otherwise I would've missed my favorite season and my all time favorite idol...heh, I guess we know who that is.

Idol Rewind did a one hour tribute to Chris Daughtry on and after Idol. Since Idol Rewind doesn't get much of an audience (it's on at midnight Sunday night/Monday morning!) I thought it might get some additional attention if I chopped it up and YouTubed it.

So if you are a Daughtry fan, a Chris Daughtry fan, or an Idol fan, you'll probably enjoy this commercial-free version. The first and last parts are short, 2-3 minutes. The rest are between 6 and 9 minutes each. Enjoy, and if you do, come back and let me know.

Chris Daughtry Journey (part 1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3DHztawVZM
This is a multi-part series. It is originally from Idol Rewind. I own no rights to the content and have left all credits intact so hopefully I'm not infringing on anything. I'm just a fan who hopes other fans that missed in on TV will be able to enjoy Chris's Journey from a teen wannabe rock star, through Idol, to a bonafide, multi-platinum rock star. The series includes interviews with Chris, his beautiful wife Deanna, members of his band, with lots of snippets from Idol, and some sneak peeks at his current Leave This Town tour (which BTW, is an epic must-see rock show!!) Be sure to watch it in HD.

Chris Daughtry Journey (part 2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2yMXL-dWUY
Part 2 starts off with a peek at setting up for a show from the Leave This Town tour. Daughtry opens with "Every Time You Turn Around." We see pictures of an adolescent Chris and one of his band members, Brian Craddock, talks about Chris as a teen. We meet Chris's wife Deanna and family and friends from his "day job" before Idol. Then comes the auditions, the previously unseen audition for the producers and the the final audition in front of Randy, Simon and Paula.

Chris Daughtry Journey (part 3) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1S2WLPnK_g
Part 3 starts off with some footage from the Leave This Town tour while Chris talks about his band. Next up on Idol is Hollywood Week and the dreaded group song "Emotion" with Ace Young. Also has extended footage on his meeting with the judges to find out his Top 24 fate. Note: you can see the contestants (men in the balcony; ladies in the chairs) all rocking out while Chris sings "Hemorrhage."

Chris Daughtry Journey (part 4) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h-DSzbDdpQ
Part 4 includes more footage of the band from the Leave This Town tour including a snippet of "Over You" and more from Brian Craddock. Back at Idol, we get Chris's renditions of "Broken" and "Higher Ground" and a snippet of "I Walk the Line" as an introduction to the upcoming part 5. Chris talks about his song selection strategy.

Chris Daughtry Journey (part 5) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkI91xSHDjM
More from the Leave This Town tour including a few words from Joey Barnes, Josh Steely, and JP. Chris chats it up with Brian May and Rod Stewart before singing Queen's "Innuendo" and a very sensitive rendition of "What a Wonderful World" (just because he can!). Also "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" Chris sports an ascot in one clip and the "handcuffed by fame" necklace in another and sings from the carpet for Andrea Bocelli and David Foster.

Chris Daughtry Journey (part 6) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQEJ9v_eYvI
Chris talks about writing for Leave This Town. There is a snippet of the "Life After You" video. Also included are "A Little Less Conversation" and the full performance of Chris's last appearance on American Idol Season 5, “Suspicious Minds."

Chris Daughtry Journey (part 7) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj3ERzs8m0U
The Idol Sendoff... Rickey Minor, Debra Byrd, Katharine McPhee (hardly recognizable), Taylor Hicks, and Chris all talk about how they felt when Chris was eliminated from Season 5. You hear Chris's rendition of "Renegade" while Idol Rewind chronicles his journey then a little snippet of "Home" while Chris talks about writing it. Josh Steely also talks about playing "Home" while on the road. I don't own any content. All credits are included on part 1.

Chris Daughtry Journey (part 8 ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmG_2loYqjg
Last in the series, this is a tribute to Chris's career after Idol. It includes glimpses of life on the road and the arena tour. Songs include some of Chris's original songs, "It's Not Over," "Tennessee Line" and "Life After You." More comments from Josh Paul, Josh Steely and Brian Craddock.

You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand

MargMom, come back and let us know how you like it : )

And if you want more, there are 6 bonus songs floating around. I think it's Walmart that has "Get Me Through."

The deluxe version of the record has 3 extra songs, "What We Have Become," "On the Inside," and "Traffic Light".

Finally there are 2 B-sides that are really good, "One Last Chance" and "Long Way" which are a couple of my favorites. I think I got those from daughtryofficial . com

You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand

ItsMyTime, thanks for mentioning the sale at Amazon for Daughtry's Leave This Town. I went right over and downloaded it. I knew I was going to eventually get it but had been putting it off and that sale was just enough to get me to check it out. I really enjoyed his first CD so much and am hopeful that I'll like most of the new songs. Thanks again.

(Cross posting from all idols thread...)

If you haven't bought Daughtry's sophomore album yet, it's on sale at Amazon TODAY for $3.99.

It's so worth it. Songs like You Don't Belong really rock. Open Up Your Eyes is hauntingly beautiful. And my personal favorite is Call Your Name which fools you into thinking its a nice ballad and halfway into the song pounds into an all-out rock song. Really $3.99? Can't go wrong.

http://www.amazon.com/Leave-This-Town/dp/B002HEOLH0

Related note, I just downloaded Lifehouse's Smoke & Mirrors (my first Lifehouse CD) and it's a keeper too. What's it got to do with this thread? Daughtry co-wrote, but that's not why I'm plugging it, It's really a good record. Check it out.

So excited to hear about Kris Allen opening for Daughtry. I just might have to make a trip from Sunny South Florida up to Hersey PA for that!!

You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand

Update: ESPN recorded Every Time You Turn Around at the Super Bowl. #$%@$ I didn't think to record ESPN, so I don't have the video but it's up at Daughtryofficial.com on the home page (along with this video). I wonder if that will be the next single. I was actually hoping for You Don't Belong or Call Your Name. I think CYN will be huge, but YDB is the hardest rockin' song on the CD so I'd like to see it get some exposure too.

LOL... maybe if David was in the mix I'd consider a trip to Europe!!!

Blondie811: Well, too bad you don't live in Europe because Nickleback and Daughtry are touring together over there Smiling

--
You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand

I may see Daughtry on May 21st in Green Bay, WI. My hubby wants to go see Nickleback the same night in Milwaukee, WI. We'll see who wins that! Honestly, I want to see Daughtry but not dying to like I would David. I love live music and concerts so I want to go but I just am not that into his music. I saw them open for for Bon Jovi but that was a couple of years ago now and I'm sure their concerts are much better now than that was. They were just ok when I saw them.

As for radio plays, I would give anything (and I can't wait for the day it happens) for the radio stations here to play David as much as they play Daughtry!

Chris has hair! Looks pretty hot to me Eye-wink

http://twitpic.com/10f1bj

LadyOrton: have a great time! I won't be going this time around unless they come back to FL or I suddenly get rich and can travel to see them. The good news for those are are rich (wink) the VIP add-on has been lowered to $100. It was $165 during the summer and fall tours.

You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand

I am going to see Daughtry on March 24th here in Rhode Island. Is anyone else going to a Daughtry show during the 2010 tour??

Spring tour dates are posted at daughtryofficial.com

Looks like at least 50 tour stops all over the country. Cavo is opening again, but Lifehouse replaces Theory of a Deadman.

You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand

I've gradually become a Daughtry fan. I wasn't a fan on his season, because he wasn't very demonstrative and didn't smile much, I liked Taylor Hicks better. But my respect and admiration has grown steadily in the years since. I like his music, and he seems like a classy guy.

Someone said they were bummed that radio plays Daughtry so much and not David so much anymore. I understand, but the difference is that Daughtry had several huge hit songs. David hasn't had that yet. He will, though. I think there were songs on the cd and bonus songs that could have been those big hits for our David, but they weren't released as singles, as we all know. So, that would explain it. I also think there are several songs on AH that are very equivalent to Daughtry's hit songs. I think RCA marketed David as too ballady-poppy instead of the alt rocker he is. So we just have to wait a little bit longer for his star to rise even higher. Meanwhile, it's so cool that he and Chris are friends. Yes I am envious of Chris and that's the kind of mega success and total acceptance I want for David, we all want I'm sure, and maybe it will happen with the next cd. We only want it because we know that David has the goods and his music is as worthy as Daughtry's, we know it, the world doesn't necessarily know it yet but they will. And meanwhile again, I am glad for Daughtry as he paves the way for a rocker Idol to be accepted.

Never considered myself to be a huge Daughtry fan, but caught his cover of "Madman" on mjs and see it posted here. That.was.great. Loved it, loved it, loved it. He like David really shines on emotional acoustic stuff. Wow.

This may be old news, but I just came across this awesome cover of Mad Man Across the Water by Chris Daughtry (unplugged without Daughtry).

Here's the link to the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqJTdBR3sEk

And here's a link to an mp3 of it. http://www.sendspace.com/file/ua031u

ETA: Updated because mp3 link had expired. This is a better quality mp3 anyway.

newbie, but count me in
i saw both these great bands only once each, both this summer; David @ HOB in Chicago & Daughtry on the small club tour @ The Vic in Chicago
Both wonderful, and I would truly be hard pressed to choose between the two Smiling

I just added my videos from the 11/30/09 show in Gainesville, FL. It was spectacular! The band was great and the audience was loud. Anybody else been to a Daughtry arena show?

You're going to have an amazing time whether you do the VIP or not!!

Eryn, great recap! Thanks!!

Question for you... In your pic with the band, I see you and your friend are both in the picture. Did you get 2 of the same pics or did they take 2 different shots? I was thinking that if I did VIP I might want a group shot with the band instead of a picture of just me and the band, but does that mean that the others in my group wouldn't get a solo pic with the band? Thanks again for sharing. This will hold me for the 4-week wait til my show. Smiling

--
When everything's the same and nothing ever changes, will you fall back into me?

Okay, my review of the show is up. It's really long, so I totally apologize for that!!

Here it is: http://www.davidcookofficial.com/us/blog/daughtry-concert-madison-wi-102...

One more thing I totally spaced on mentioning: JP is actually the bartender in the VIP lounge, so if you do the VIP and you can drink, you totally get more face time with the man.

Eryn267: Thanks for posting your update! Can't wait for the full recap and pics. I'd love to do VIP, but I don't think I can afford it this time. I might breakdown (pun intended!) if there are any left closer to the date, but I've already spent a few hundred dollars for my rockin' weekend. I will try for the Chris's twitter contest though Smiling

SquirrellyGirl: I agree that Daughtry's first album has been played out on radio, but Leave This Town is phenominal and so far they have only played one song from it (No Surprise) on the radio although the second single (Life After You) was just released. If you are a Daughtry fan, you will LOVE this new record. I bought the deluxe version from iTunes so got 3 bonus songs, then bought the bonus track from Walmart (Get Me Through) and then the 2 B-sides songs you can get directly from Daughtry's official website. The B songs and bonuses are every bit as spectacular as the 12 songs that made the official version. So if you are a Daughtry fan that's tired of the old songs, you will fall in love with this band all over again after listening to Leave This Town!

--
So take a minute just to breathe, and think of everything you wanted, and what you got instead.

Squirrellygirl (not verified):

I love Daughtry, but they play his music so much I'm sick of him. Sorry to say it, but it is true. My local radio station makes me hate Daughtry. On the other hand, it's rare to hear David anymore. I don't get it. I think David is every bit as good, but I don't think he struck while the momentum was going. I think David should be playing bigger venues. I don't think he should "RETIRE" any song that went platinum. David, please do another video just for me (like you forgot my birthday, so you owe me...you know???).

--
Squirrellygirl

Went to the Daughtry show last night in Madison, WI. Let me tell you that the show was AMAZING!! These guys really know how to put on a pretty epic rock show.

We also upgraded to VIP, and I really recommend it for die-hard Daughtry fans. You get to see a private sound check of the guys, then the meet-and-greet (which is quick, but still pretty phenomenal), pick up your autograph and then you get first-dibs on the merchandise. Another great perk is that if you get back to the venue before the doors open, they hold all the doors around the arena until the VIPs are in. Meaning you get to your seats first and don't have to wait in line.

All in all, it was a really great show and I can't wait to see the guys again. I'm working on a re-cap of the show including pics, which I'll post when I'm done.

azdcfan: You got an hour and a half?! Cool! David, are YOU listening (hehe)

eryn267: just one more week for you!! Lucky you, I still have to wait another 5 weeks, but I know it will be worth the wait.

ItsMyTime (oh, wait, that's me LOL): YAY... DAVID'S COMING BACK TO FLORIDA. I got my tickets yesterday and his show is the same weekend as DAUGHTRY'S. David on Sat. 11/28 in Orlando, Daughtry on Mon. 11/30 in Gainesville. It doesn't get any better than that. Well, actually it does cuz before I knew David was coming back to FL, I got tickets for Dashboard Confessional on Sun, 11/29 also in Orlando, so I have a triple-header coming off Thanksgiving weekend. My version of ROCK HEAVEN!!

So take a minute just to breathe, and think of everything you wanted, and what you got instead.

There's a new music video for their single "Life After You", it's really good.

Hey Daughtry fans. Don't forget to vote for Daughtry for an AMA. They are up for Adult Contemporary (go figure!)
