When Should RCA Release David's Next Single? Fire Away!
Beginning Of December? After the holidays? February?
I was surprised to hear Jive is already releasing Archie's second single after Thanksgiving...and are currently planning the video...despite the fact Crush is still doing so well. I'm not sure if this is the best move..but who knows. Time will tell.
I know LO, which I really do like, is steadily climbing on HAC, but I don't think it ever produced that coattail effect we were all hoping for. Luckily, there are so many great tracks to pick from on the album.
Anyways, I was just curious to everyone's opinion.

How about if his first single could also be used as the new AI elimination song? Those songs always wind up being huge hits every year. Of course, that also could give David the sort of pop exposure that could prove to be anathema to die-hard rock fans...so I dunno. But still, it's an interesting concept. But the three songs I mentioned wouldn't do--"Light On" might actually work better as an AI elimination song.

I think we also need to consider the promotional schedule. He's not even finished promoting LO yet. It's starting to take hold on radio. If he were to release a new song now it would be really difficult to get him booked on all those shows again.
In January, he's gonna be overseas and unable to promote a new single. When he comes back he'll be able to discuss singing for the troops as well as promote a new song.
In addition, AI starts up again and he'll be performing there. That's a great place to get exposure for a new song.
I say mid January to early February.

I think the next single should defnitely be released after the holidays. Right now, most of the Top 40 stations have switched to an all-Christmas format, and some of the Hot AC stations are adding more Christmas music to their playlists. Personally I don't get this practice, as I doubt highly that most people want to hear 24/7 Christmas music before Thanksgiving even starts, or even later than that (I know I sure don't!), but unfortuntely this has become a traditional practice every year and so any new music that *does* get played (and would only be played on occasion on the Hot AC stations) s not going to be heard by the right audience. Statistics have shown (sorry, don't have a source at the moment) that the young-through middle aged audience (the audience that would be buying David Cook) prefers the regular rock/pop format, and tends to switch to all-rock, some other genre, or just listen to CDs instead once the holiday music takes over. However, during the holidays, the elderly are drawn in to the holiday music. I really have no idea why this practice is continued, since it's got to be losing the radio stations money.
Anyway, I digress. I definitely think David Cook's record should be released to radio when the young-middle aged listeners return, and that would be after the Christmas music ends. So I'd say the first of the year should be when the first song/s is released to the radio, and my choices would be "Avalanche," "Lie" or "Life on the Moon."

I have no idea how the radio world works between Thanksgiving and the end of the year. I believe that most of the holiday programming occurs on AC formats with a sprinkling of it on HAC and Top 40. My sense is that very little new material is showcased during this period. And I have absolutely no clue how the rock formats work.
I do think they want to give Light On a chance to shine brighter and climb higher so I doubt they would put out a single in the next couple of weeks. That would mean the only window left this year is the 2nd or 3rd week of December. It just seems unlikely that this is a good time to release anything new. Seems like everything slows way down as we get near the year's end.
So, I'm thinking early next year, in the first couple weeks of January, is the optimal time. That way it would tie into the excitement of the new year, the new presidency, the upcoming tour. And I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was their plan all along. I think they timed LO's release and the album release perfectly. My hope is that they will go for a dual release of Come Back To Me and Bar-ba-Sol. The more I listen to the album, the more I'm convinced that CBTM is on the album specifically for radio release to amp up sales and build greater exposure.
I would say after the holidays, that way it's not lost in the shuffle of Christmas themes that are played on radio in December. I would say probably after the first of the year or sometime in the first few weeks of January.
As much as I would like a single to be released ASAP, I'm thinking it would be better for David's sales, and a smart marketing strategy to wait a bit. =)
now is good,we have waited long enough, hahahahahhahhahahahhaaha. seriously now is good, more DC and the band, and im a happy camper.selfish,i know,lol..

Lil Sparrow, given the Christmas music thing, this may very well be a bad move by Jive, althought Top 40 is less likely have holiday music than HAC and AC. Same with rock, so I still think releasing Bar-Ba-Sol to rock in a couple of weeks would be cool.
Unlike last time around, Mr. Cook has won the album debut big-time. And Archie's next single may not do nearly as well as Crush did. Lot's more competition, in addition to the Christmas music, and from what I hear, Crush and Angels are the best songs on that album. His fans already have the album, so it would have to be a killer-great song to do that well.
Oh man . . . Jive . . . Archie . . . singles . . . if I have to relive the entire Crush debacle again I really am not going to make it. I'm going to try to avoid that subject as much as possible.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand: January is a good choice, but I'm really hungering for a second single ASAP. I know I keep harping on the Heroes thing, but if there is a possibility for a tie-in planned
they could start this up in January when we get new episodes and it could really heat up for February sweeps.
i think BAR-BA-SOL!!!!!!!
lo is awesome
and iv requested it al all media outlets
lets get a rockin song!!!!
For those of you who want it released now - do your stations switch to solid Christmas and holiday music like mine do? How will you feel if they release something and then it isn't played anywhere?
Exactly! Now is really bad time IMO. The Hot AC station here switches to a 24/7 Christmas format on Thanksgiving until Midnight December 26th and then immediately goes back to the regular format. Some of the AC stations have already started with 24/7 Christmas music or have snuck a few of the Christmas songs into their formats. Some of the top 40 stations will sneak some Christmas songs into their formats after Thanksgiving and it will cause some newer songs to get bumped off of their playlists to make room for some of these Christmas songs and even after Christmas, some stations don't immediately stop playing them until after the first of the year (I saw that last year monitoring the YES site). The day after Christmas usually starts the year end countdowns and they sometimes will go on till at least January 2nd or thereabouts. So, it's really better to wait till January after all of the Christmas music and year end countdowns are over.

Will I have to start-up the We Are The Angstiest Angsters that Ever Angsted thread again. I don't know if I could put up with all the weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth that would occur because your station is playing dogs barking Jingle Bells, Chipmunks singing carols, and Grandma Run Over By a Reindeer instead of DC singing Lies.

Jai_S .....It's not rock if it's not Red Bull and throaty passion.
NOW!!!!!!!! FTW!!!!! More exposure for David and the EEB.

I agree NOW, but in reality maybe it would be better after the holidays? IDK? I would love for something else out there. My radio station has yet to play LO but still want to play TOML over and over. Maybe something else would catch their eye? Who knows. I have talked to them and they love him. this was before LO. I know he said that he wants to give LO its time so I would expect after Christmas based on his comment.

I say the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. But we would have heard of this by now, because RCA would be notifying radio stations and the media about when they're going for impact and adds. So maybe the following Tuesday, 12/9. DC's album will continue to sell well in the meantime because of the holiday shopping season. But I think another single should be released before Christmas.
I think it should be a double release:
Bar-Ba-Sol on rock only.
Either CBTM or Lie on HAC/Top40/AC
Depending on how well that does, I think Declaration should be next later in the winter. If rock picks up Bar-Ba-Sol, then they will likely pick up Declaration, which should also chart well on HAC and maybe Top40.
ETA: Didn't think about Christmas music. Maybe Bar-Ba-Sol to rock on 12/9, and either CBTM or Lie to the other formats the first Tuesday in January.
OK, I can deal with Jan 1. How's that sound?

On point as usual Jai_S. I keep hoping that RCA is as savvy as you are - and the selection and timing of Light On release is in keeping with some brilliant secret plan that will keep DCTR on the charts for a long, long time.
He goes to Iraq in the beginning of January and his tour is supposed to start shortly after.

About two weeks before his tour begins. That's January, right ?
Stations are switching to Christmas music now or in the near future. I think a new single will be lost in the shuffle. Wait until after the holidays.

Maybe close to Christmas? Mid-December, perhaps? If not that, then no later than the first of the year.

After Thanksgiving. We know that David can easily have 10 singles chart at the same time. and of his own songs? Piece of cake.
