BEST OF TWOP - YOU HAD ME AT HELLO THREAD

Hi all

Seeing we're all falling down the rabbit hole again, I thought I would start a blog where we can preserve our favorite snips from the original Television without Pity - You had me at Hello thread.

Rules: There are no rules! Copy and paste what you find finny, interesting, irritating or just downright bizarre. However if you can, try to give the username of the original poster, and date and time of posting. If you want to provide context, feel free to do so.

Someone please explain how exactly the cameraman was able to force DC to audition just because he was caught on camera, backing up with his hands up saying "whoah, whoah, I'm not auditioning." I don't get it. I've wondered for a while, but I think hearing that story for the 74th time just put me over the edge. I hope he shakes up the story at some point and says that in response to his objections to auditioning, the producer pulled out a Colt 45 and said, with malice in his eyes, "You are now, Punk. You are now."

Here’s the conversation:

Me: You want to go see a "rock concert"?
Her: To see?
Me: Doesn't matter, do you want to go?
Her: "cynical" stare
Me: The guy who’s CD I made for you.
Her: You mean the American Idol concert?
Me: No… David Cook does like 5 songs in a row and other songs in between, ummm others…
Her: And the others are?
Me: It’s like a mini-rock concert… Well, it just happens to be at the same venue as the AI concert… But he’s really good…
Her: Sure you dork.

This picture is FTW and I had never seen it before. He has his arms around all 4 girls. And Jason and Archie are just like what about us?

Then something happened that I've never seen before: David came off the stage and straight out into the audience, ignoring the clamoring "moshers" to make a beeline for his cancer-stricken brother, Adam, who was seated behind the judging platform. Massive hugging ensued. This was, even for me, a really kind of amazingly touching moment, despite the fact that I thought David was just hugging his mother and uncle or something until after the show when Rushfield informed me that I should really try reading the Internet every once in a while. The judges greeted Adam warmly, and the three also give David a few more props: Simon pointing fondly in his face as if to say, "You. You were... magical"; Paula hugging him; Randy clasping his shoulder very sincerely.

I always knew I liked Simon. Man, DC is just a sweet guy. He continues to blow me away.

Ahhh this is one great guy

Here are some random posts on the old twop about Dolly Parton's Little Sparrow, there was a discussion about David shaving his head for some reason and this first one cracked me up:

David Cook + Dolly Parton = Oil and Water

Well, yeah. But who really thought ahead of time that David Cook + LIONEL RICHIE equalled awesome? And that David Cook + Michael Jackson (Chris arrangement aside, when people heard he was singing Billie Jean, MOST people went to MJ, not CC) would equal yet more awesome and delicious iTunes sales goodness?

I can't wait to see what he'll do.

I love you Cookie, but WTF? Could you pick a song that's less suited for your voice? Michael Crawford you ain't. There are some seriously low notes in that song and that doesn't always work out so well for him.

I suppose he probably rearranged it, but I'm scared.

That was effing brilliant. As my casual AI fan sister said "You know, if he doesn't win American Idol, he should have a career singing on Broadway."

Oh why can't they show more actual backstage footage? Babypics and Thing We Might Be Surprised To Learn are fun and all, but I really want some insight into how they work.
(Eh. The contestant would probably be less than thrilled to have more cameras around them all day).

That, and I can think of several contestants who would have been booted long before their time. Can you imagine the shenanigans that would be revealed?

[camera pans across backstage; focuses on Cook alone in a corner, strumming his guitar and jotting down music notes]
Interviewer: So, how's it going?
Cook: Um, it's going pretty well. I think I've figured out what I want to do with the song, so hopefully it pans out on stage.
Interviewer: And what song will you be doing?
Cook: Well, I want it to be a surprise. But, uh, hopefully people will like my rearrangement, which was in no way, shape or form inspired by [insert obscure band name here], [insert obscure rockstar here], [insert huge rockstar who never did a cover here], etc...
Interviewer: Uh, okay then. Good luck with that. [camera pans away from Cook, who is still listing bands, focuses on David Archuleta, who is surrounded by at least ten other people] How are you doing, Archie?
Archie: Um, gosh, I, I think I'm doing okay, hee! Um, I'm going to be singing one of my favorite songs, which is, uh -- [Archie gets cut off as Team Member #1 shoves face in camera]
#1: He will be doing a radical hip-hop arrangement of Joy To The World, which I came up with and which the world will love!
#2: No, no, no! He'll be singing an inspirational cover of my original song, Puppies And Miracles And Magic Rainbows, which will bring the audience to tears!
#3: [grumpily] He was SUPPOSED to be singing a Pearl Jam hit, but Cook stole that.
Jeff Archuleta: [pushes son and TEAM ARCHULETA away from camera] Hello, Clive Davis? David Foster? Diane Warren? This is Jeff Archuleta. Please call me at 555-
Interviewer: Yeah, we'll be leaving now. [camera pans across room, hesitates on Brooke who has torn chunks of hair out and frothing at the mouth]Uh, okay, then...[camera focuses on Carly] Going well, Carly?
Carly: Ugh, you know, this would be SO MUCH EASIER if I wasn't Irish, and female, and had a failed record deal, and married to a tatooed freak, and Simon didn't hate me . . .
Interviewer: Yeah, whatever. Next, please! [camera focuses on Syesha, who is doing weird dance moves with a chair] What are you doing, Syesha?
Syesha: Practicing my lap dance for Randy. See if he can stop me with penguins now, motherf***er!
Interviewer: Oh my god, I think I just vomited in my mouth a little. Moving on! [camera stops on Jason, who is napping]
Interviewer: Jason? JASON!
Jason: Bzuh? What's up, dude?
Interviewer: Shouldn't you be working on your song? You only have a day left until performance night!
Jason: Song?
Interviewer: Yeah, you know . . . for American Idol?
Jason: American Idol?
Interviewer: [sigh] We'll be right back.

Just thinking, David has had an incredible three weeks: "Happy Together", "All Right Now", and now "Hello" were all fantastic.

I'm going to go out on a limb here.... but I think David is going to be the next American Idol.

...What amazes me is the media we've been reading about Cookie moving to Kansas City (is it that city?) to become a guitarist and background singer to some group (not Axium). He was the BACKGROUND SINGER! Makes one wonder what their lead singer was like. Maybe *he* should try out for Idol if he was better than Cookie. (Doubt it, but who knows.)

...Speaking of Analog, I so freakin' want to hear that album live, I can't stand it. I know there was some consensus here a million pages or so ago about how we probably missed the boat on that unless it's re-released--how when he actually tours solo it will probably be all about the post-AI album. But I want to jump up and down to "Straight Ahead" and stare slackjawed during "The Truth" and have the audience shout back "...REACTION!" during "Let Go." Is that too much to ask?

MistressSarcasm May 22, 2008 @ 4:57 pm post#9080
...It would be flipping amazing if they could get Chris Cornell or Raine Maida to write something for his album. Cornell probably wouldn't, but Raine has worked with Kelly Clarkson and Canadian Idol contestants in the past so it is a distinct possibility. If David produced an album that sounded like Our Lady Peace I would be a happy camper.

...Hopefully some of the songs he was working on for his new indie record will show up on the new one. I'd love to hear the full version of this song especially. Maybe he'll be allowed to sing a few of them at live shows even if they don't get officially released.

Looks like TOML is actually doing quite well on HAC-format stations as well as "cheez-it" Pop and AC.
These format designations are crazy. Hot Adult Contemporary? WTF does that even mean?
But if David Cook is Hot Adult Contemporary then sign me up I guess.

Just went back and watched the "Happy Together" performance (which was great, of course). It's really amazing how much DC has changed in such a short time. Never mind the much-needed tonsorial transformation -- he was a bit of a cocky, punky kid then, whereas he's now a more polished package of sex appeal, gravitas, and maturity. As I said upthread, he strikes me as someone who learns quickly, and this evolution is, I think, one result.

I was thinking the same thing! I never could understand all of the words in the original, and now that I know what they are it totally changes my perception of the song. LOL.

Good point. All I heard in the original was, "I'ma dance, omma glow, look around...Billie Jean is not my mother...the Chan is not my son...SHAMON!" Actually enunciating the words reveals that the emo treatment is just right for this song.

David C. gets my vote as the "sleeper" for this season. He's as good a singer as David A., and has more depth and emotional maturity. He's just not getting the attention partly because he's considered the "rocker", and partly because he looks a little sloppy. But underneath the mop, he looks just fine. All he needs to do is clean up a bit, and he'll make the Top 5, imo. Then, if he can demonstrate an ability to show a softer side, he could win it all.
Yeah, I'm not getting Simon's criticism of "no charsima". I think he just hates David. I thought the performance was charismatic.
I think that Simon just doesn't like "rockers". Next time Simon says that, David C. shouldn't backtalk, he should ask the crowd for a second opinion as to his charisma. When the crowd erupts in cheers, that will be the best way to prove Simon wrong.

As someone who virtually camped out on the the Sligh board last year (along with dozens of other snarkers), I have to say that I don't see the similarities. Unlike Sligh, this kid is talented, and seems to have a more pleasant personality. It's only after Simon's uncalled-for-criticism that David C. gets defensive. And actually, I think David was justified in responding, even though he did it in a clumsy way. I mean, criticizing him for liking crossword puzzles? Comment on the performance, Simon.

ETA: I'm not one to argue that David shouldn't win Idol for any reason, but I guarantee you if he gets signed by Clive he won't be releasing that album. It's entirely possible that songs from the album (and even songs from AH) could end up on whatever album he does release, but Clive will certainly want to have more of a hand in things than just putting out DCook's independently recorded CD.

And how hot was Cook with his sharp new guitar on "Sharp Dressed Man"? Please, sir, I want some more.
Actually, watching that performance last night really solidified a thought I'd been having all day, which is that I hope he/they decide to market him as the frontman in an asymmetrical band a la Springsteen/E Street or Petty/Heartbreakers. In part because he's a "bonder", and in part because he's such a team player. I think that will work for him a lot better in the long run than "it's all about me."

I prefer the live version to the studio version as well. I'm not a huge fan or anything, but I think David has an amazing voice. He doesn't sound quite as good as Chris Daughtry recorded, but he's a much better performer than Chris ever was, imo.
