David Cook Wins American Idol
He had me at Hello, and he outperformed almost all the other contestants since week one. He brought us one rocking track after the other with the likes of Billie Jean, Always Be My Baby, Innocent, I'm Alive, Little Sparrow, Eleanor Rigby, and so much more. And he never once failed to entertain us. Never was he seen on the bottom pile of Idol contestants.
Can I just say that this is the most emotional investment I've had for a season of Idol. Usually I just watched for the kicks of it. It always has been an entertaining show to watch. But in the past, I've never wanted a single contestant to win so much. Until David Cook.
Sure, I liked Elliott Yamin and Chris Daughtry and was disappointed when they left the show way before Hicks and McPhee. Sure, I liked Bo Bice and was slightly sad that Underwood won instead. And sure, I was very happy for Fantasia when she won and was beyond impressed when she sang her coronation song, I Believe. But none of those compares to how much I anticipated watching David Cook every week and hoping beyond hope that he wins the show, because Idol has never seen a contestant as intriguing and talented as Cook. He connects with his audience and is an amazing vocalist.
There are a lot of reasons to like Cook, vocals and looks aside. His sob story is one that is powerful, but never in the entire show did he mention his brother, Adam, even once. Which is so unlike Kellie Pickler who flaunted her sad past. This makes David one of the classiest Idols ever. You never did hear him talk about Lindsey Rose either and he never publicly explained the orange baller band he wears during the show. If you do know about it, it's because you heard it from someone else, not from him. If that's not class, then what is?
Also, he truly and sincerely adores his co-competitors. He never puts himself before them and he is the only Idol winner to pull the rest of the Top 12 with him during the coronation song. He pulled the others into the spotlight and that makes him truly wonderful. He shared that moment with Archuleta, because Archuleta really did deserve it, too. He even stood back to applaud Archuleta when the results were announced, before taking center stage, where he bent over crying.
Simon always said, during his past interviews, that when it came down to the two Davids, Cook should win. Simon hardly ever endorses a contestant. But he did this season. He was found saying, "I think he’s done more to deserve it over the eleven weeks. He’s taken more risks, he’s done things with certain songs that have been more interesting. If I’m gonna base it on who has done the best performances over the live shows, David Cook deserves to win.”
That's why all his comments last night didn't make sense to me. Until I realized the possibility that this was his way of urging the Cookies to vote. And I guess that's what happened. The Cookies went on a voting frenzy and led the race by 12 million votes. That's not a close fight, is it?
Am I happy Cook won? I'm ecstatic. Would I have been devastated if he lost? Yes. But I also believe that win or lose, Cook was already a star and will definitely beat Archuleta in terms of record sales. He is my American Idol and my Guitar Hero (You've got to see his Guitar Hero commercial! Tres funny, in Risky Business stylistic of a white polo and underwear!). And him winning the actual title is just the cherry on the top of a spectacular season.
