If She Never Broke Your Heart

This poem was inspired by David's song "My Last Request." As I was listening to it in amazement and in awe of David's incredible haunting vocals, I started to think "Where would we be if she never broke his heart?"

If She Never Broke Your Heart

If she never broke your heart,
We would've never felt your pain or heard your song.

If she never broke your heart,
We would've never seen a new sunrise,
Or the light in your eyes.

If she never broke your heart,
We would ' ve never seen deep into your soul,
Or traveled every mile to see your smile.

If she never broke your heart,
Where would we be?
If she never broke your heart you could've never been free.

If she never broke your heart,
We would've never been renewed or inspired,
Just somewhere exsisting, walking our wire.

If she never broke your heart,
We would've never felt the dream,
The wish or the prayer,
Just somewhere exsisting, all the lonely standing there.

If she never broke your heart,
Where would we be?
If she never broke your heart you could've never been free.

But maybe she paved the way to the beauty we all can see,
Maybe she started the flame that fed the fire,
And helped us all come down from our wire.

If she never broke your heart,
Where would we be?
If she never broke your heart you could've never been free.

What a gorgeous poem! Seems like it could be a wonderful song!

David is opening up All of our hearts [to match his "high heart"]. I feel like we are the leading edge of human evolution! *giggle*

No, really, I know David would be SO pleased how he's inspired us with his words and music. I know there is nothing in the world that makes him happier, knowing he's touched people with his passion: music.

DAVID COOK

Extremely heartfelt, symbolic, and endearing. Great write!

This is such a heartfelt tribute to all David's pain and the beauty that arises from it the way a phoenix rises from the ashes. You have a gift. Keep writing.

Rest your head...I'm permanent

That was beautiful and true. Out of David's pain came all this beauty. And the lesson for us all is that all of our heartaches and pains, if we respond appropriately, can be used in the lives of others for building them up. Thanks for writing that and sharing it. I'm going to have to go think about that for a while.

It's a wonder to think that something that's warmed so many originated with heartbreak.
Your poem reminded me of a beautiful song sung by Melanie Crittendon, The Broken Road, which has a fitting lyric : "Every long lost dream led me to where you are; others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars".

Your poem is beautiful! I really feel that we experience things in our life for a reason. Like your poem, the experiences in David's life is through I would have to say in most of his songs. Look how many people he has inspired though his songwriting. And you're right, what if things were different? I can say if things were different, I wouldn't be the changed person I am today. His music has inspired me to do so many things, I can no longer imagine life without his music.

That was wonderful! It's amazing how David brings out the artistry in us. Your poem is very true. His emotion obviously comes from experiences in his life.

You're quite a writer yourself! This is beautiful and I echo the sentiments......."if she never broke your heart, where would we be"......without DC? Unimaginable!

And to Kate, definitely.....go for it! We need all the beautiful songwriters we can get in this jaded world ....thank God for David.....no wonder I can't stop listening to his music and reading his lyrics......someday, I hope to be reading published works from the two of you as well!!!

I think I've discovered another writer on this forum. This is a beautiful poem, controlled and emotive. I'm wondering, since you've copyrighted it if you are a professional? I've buried that part of me for years and David is actually responsible for awakening it again. I was listening to an interview he did where he said he was being encouraged to give up the music life and settle down but he felt he needed to keep going. It's that drive and vision I think the universe responded to and helped his dreams come true. So I know now that I did settle and what I settled for is pretty darn good - loving husband, two beautiful daughters, but the desire to put my all into writing still burns. And I think I'm going to have to 'go for it.'
