Live From New York

LIVE FROM NEW YORK
Holy s***, that rocked.
What, you want more?
"Light On" was excellent, but "Declaration" is eleventy times as good as that and in two weeks we get the whole . . .damn . . .album.
Last night, Cook rocked his executive drag, looking like a hot, naughty rockstar businessman of some sort. He looked nervous as hell for about two seconds and then he blew it out of the park, as so often happens. The vocals were some highly addictive mix of lush and earnest.
Apparently, David Cook nervous is like a normal person one hundred percent confident, only much, much, better.
And Skib was hot in a small dark intense Severus Snape sort of way, and he sang and played guitar and did a little keyboard so he's like trisexual or polygamous or ambidextrous or some such.
Tiemann was all hot in a large bleached-blond facially-peirced way. The camera guys were all into him and totally zoomed in on him a bunch but what I mostly noticed was that he played his ass off. The little solo thing in Light On, and the end of Declaration, ngggggh.
Peek drummed like hot holy heck despite his tragic disability of being blinded by his pretty, pretty hair. No, really, the Kid made a surprisingly strong contribution to the whole thing, it was like he dived off a tall diving board and just completely went for it.
Clement was all business in a highly attractive, spiral-curled bassist sort of way, providing the steady underpinnings to the whole enterprise and I loved it at the end of the show when Cook did like a little jig and hugged him
Fan reaction?
Well, people loved it. Somewhere I'm sure someone didn't, because there always is, but today I can't bring myself to care. Cook serviced the entire internet once again and they woke up happy and satisfied.
The main thing is, David and Band, we're proud of you. That was a performance to absolutely take pride in.
It's a beautiful fall day on the East Coast, so I hope you boys can spend a while in Manhattan.
See, recently there seems to be some confusion among a few folks about what is the Real America and what is the Not Real America, and who are the true Americans who work hard and love their country and this theory that there are the rest of us who don't. Well, New York City is a great antidote to all that mess.
Come with me down to Penn Station, if you've got the time, and let's look around. People here are selling glossy magazines and warm popcorn, pizza and falafel, hot coffee and cold Budweiser, hair scrunchies and lottery tickets, Yankees ball caps and the Financial Times, fresh fruit and Godiva chocolate.
In every direction, people are rushing, hastening, striding, swirling, up and down staircases and escalators, following mysterious paths to the subway, to the train, to the commuter rail, to the street, to queues of yellow taxis and lines of chugging buses.
You cast your visitor's eyes upwards and even the hodgepodge of station signs are exciting because they hold names you've heard in stories your whole life: "Madison Square Garden, 7th Avenue, Times Square, the A Train." You half expect a couple of dancing World War Two sailors to come laughing by singing "it's a hell of a town."
From one side of the station, a voice is booming: "NOW boarding, Track Number NINE, for Newark, New Jersey, WILmington, Delaware, Phil-a-DEL-pheeee--ah Thirtieth Street Station, BALT-eemore, Washington Dee Cee UNION STATION, Alexandria, AAAAAAND Richmond . . ." Every few minutes, a new train posts to the enormous, old-fashioned board and with a tremendous clatter the name and time and track-number plates rattle and turn.
An excited looking boy and girl in their teens, skinny, with eyes wide, backpacks bulging, are staring every which way and clutching a street map.
Some frat boys in the remnants of their Saturday night party gear are consoling their buddy as he pukes into a garbage can.
A crowd of Texas tourists swarms by, all blond hair and rolling luggage, followed by a Haitian kids' soccer team, a group of wealthy-looking women shoppers in Chanel, some finance a-holes clutching Blackberries and looking pale, and the tenor section of the New York City Gay Men's Chorus on their way to early practice for their holiday show.
A Hasid in his broad-brimmed had passes a priest on his way to Saint Patrick's.
A girl in a party dress clutching a gaily-wrapped present scampers down the steps to the LIRR.
Some guys go by in uniform, headed for the Amtrak and the long ride back to Quantico.
A woman in a hijaab, clutching a grocery bag from Sahadi's, is is talking excitedly into a cell phone and trying to steer three tiny children towards the A train to Atlantic Avenue.
All of this is America, too, people passing by on the way from everywhere to the rest of their lives. Playing live in New York City is playing in front of the whole country in more ways then one.
On Tuesday morning, we're going to go stand in line all over that country and, I don't know about you, but it will be the most f***cking exciting line standing that I've ever done. It will be more exciting then even your show tonight, baby. And there won't be any texting, and we can't buy six phones and vote for our favorite a thousand times and Ryan Seacrest won't be there to give us the results, but dude, you know how hard we cried when you won Idol?
One way or the other, I'm a gonna be crying on Wednesday morning. Just don't know yet which kind of tears they will be.
It's gonna be one hundred percent completely live.
Kisses

Bad Comparison
Spaniel:
"My only disagreement is that Andy is way too cute to be compared to Severus Snape."
Well, yeah. Fortunately the real life band will never read this stuff, because I can't think of a better way to mortally offend a dude.
Y'all are really into this guy, no one's sad that I mocked Tiemann, Peek and Clement, too?

Beautiful! Thanks! Go get in line before the polls close, you will still get to vote.
Wonderful. Entertaining and inspirational, yet again.
My only disagreement is that Andy is way too cute to be compared to Severus Snape. He looks more like Frodo Baggins to me. He's adorable, as are the rest of the boys in the band.
And since you mentioned the election, I'll pass on the reminder from ABC news that if you are in line before the stated closing time for your polling station, you do get to vote. So, go and stay in line until you vote.
Thanks!
Awesome!
Articulate and intelligent writing. Loved reading it. I also will be sitting on pins and needles tonight waiting along with everyone else for the outcome of this election. Playing David's performances on SNL over and over again, driving my kids crazy (Did you already watch that today?) while waiting. I hope to be able to say "I'm proud to be an American" again soon. Because quite frankly, I've been a bit embarrassed for a number of years now. God Bless America, indeed!

Last Election Day update
One last election day comment I'll put here and in the blog. A bunch of folks commented that they are from other countries--Canada, the UK, Finland and Brazil--and were planning on following the election results closely.
There is a very good website called "538.com that focuses only on hard data and statistics about the election. I found throughout the primaries that since there aren't any news anchors and spokespeople from the various parties arguing, and so on, it's easier to follow the actual results on this site then in the news websites and channels.
If you check in there during the course of the next twelve hours, they should be among the first to provide hard data about results.
They also have excellent charts showing every state result.
Whatever one's hopes in this contest, all the best to you.

Hee! Damn, you made me do a total Clement rewatch. That's a pretty cute expression he gives someone (Neal?), plus, so bendy!
Mostly, I think they did an amazing job, all five. But maybe Clement and Peek should get extra gold stars because the other three have been playing together for so long, if never for a national audience before.

I'm not in the habit of doing this, but...
[squishes you]
You made my heart grow three sizes and start singing about mountains and prairies and oceans white with foam.
Also, the band DID rock.
But I must say, as good as Mr. Clement is at holding things together, I would recommend that everyone go back to the 1 minute mark or so of "Declaration" and watch what he's doing. Because, well, yes. (And I was trying to identify the bass [Fender 70s Jazz?], okay?)
Wednesday morning
I loved reading this. I used to live in New York and your description really brought me back there. I absolutely love that city and if I could just pick any city in the US as my home, it would NY. For me (personal opinion only), it's the only US city worth living in. But aside from that, cearbhaill cracked me up with the comment about being so inside the David Cook bubble that she (he?) couldn't figure out what line to stand in on Tuesday and why Wednesday was going to be important! I was in the same fog! David completely hypnotizes us, doesn't he? And I am SO looking forward to the change (please, God) that will be made official on Tuesday so I can get rid of this 8-year long bad mood! Meantime, LOVING me some David Cook. My only comment on the drummer is that he's terrific, but he looked like his head was going to fly off. I never got much of a chance to see the hair everyone talks about because it was always flying all over the place. I hope he tones that down a little so he looks less like a cartoon character.

The whole band rocked and you are so right. I'm proud as hell.

This is great.
Thanks for putting into words what I was thinking when I read a certain article about fly over rock. I have lived all over this country and I love it small town or big city. The review of SNL was awesome and you know I believe a change is coming on Tuesday.

Besides David, the highlight of DCO.
"...q's about kaydeecee's offensive sense of humor..." Nope...your sense of humor is never offensive. Not in the least. It's side splitting, it's tear jerking, it's rolling on the floor laughing, it's the truth, but it's never offensive. Keep it coming. It was the first thing I looked for on DCO when I got back from Missoura (sp) (besides David, of course) and I wasn't disappointed. You rock.
Nice!
I really loved your decription of NYC. Gave me a good picture of what the city is like. I hope to visit there some day.
I definitely won't be crying on Wednesday morning. I'll just be letting out a sigh of relief that it's over.
Oh...and the band rocked. lol

Silver, hurrah for Cook fans in London!
I hope the band goes there sometime, so I can write them a British adventure. Did you know I have lived there in the distant past? Queenstown Road, in Battersea.
Thank you, normanthecat! and Cearbhaill, ariadne in Canada, andreak, chawan, lithium, NLeigh, and all of yez.

MADE OF AWESOME
Yes, kaydeecee, you are. This reminded me of Jacob's last recap--the one where he talked about David and the kinds of America he is in love with--and I mean that as a compliment, as that recap is one of my favorite things ever. It also reminded me Mark Helprin's book ,"A Winter's Tale," which if you haven't read, you should (also, "Freddy and Frederica," which features a scene at a political convention where the title character, the exiled Prince of Wales...I don't want to spoil it, but it's just freakin' fantabulous).
I come for snark, and I end up with tears. Bless you and your infinite variety.
Hi Kaydeecee!
Great recap! (Wouldn't have expected anything less)
And thank you for your thoughts on this coming Tuesday. We are ALL Americans, whatever part of the country we live in, and we are diverse.
And yes, whatever happens on Tuesday does affect the rest of the world.
(A quick hello to Silver & Finn - hi guys!)
. .
Yup.
Oh, Kaydeecee, I have nothing to add but... ditto. Ditto, ditto, ditto. I have never been prouder to be a David Cook fan in my life. And the EEB will forever own my heart as well.

David Cook: My Drug and My Anti-Drug.
I'm blown away
That was very touching! First I want to comment about SNL part, that was hilarious and on the spot again. I floved the part where you described David to be "looking like a hot, naughty rockstar businessman of some sort" SO true!
And the New York! I have never been there, but hopefully I someday get to come. You made it sound beautiful and intriquing. I have my finnish hopes up for your election on Tuesday. I don't take parts here publicly, but we had a poll here were you could vote as you think AMERICANs vote on Tuesday (not how you should, but how you will) and the other candidate got 90% of the votes. For the sake of yours and my country too, I hope you do as we "predicted". I'm not going to write which that other candidate was.
You are such a gifted writer and besides being your #1 fan in Finland, I have advertised you to one of my friends, who now comes to read your blogs here too. She isn't even registered, cause I have not converted her totally into DC fan, but she surely enjoys your writings
Thanks! Finn

I swear I felt like some character in one of your fan reports last night.
You are my dear, you are! I mean Penn Station is one of my emotionally metaphoric places since long ago, and I took this picture from its steps this summer, but I did read your post, too.
All the fan reports are made of 100% actual fan, you know.
Say, your experience of the live show is so cool--have you thought about putting it in a blog post? I could link to it then.

I did not see that coming.
You know, the part where I get all teary-eyed and patriotic while visiting the David Cook fan club.
But I love this, all of it.
To paraphrase Mr. Cook, I am hoping for the best, and preparing for the worst.
Also, "executive drag". Hee!

Concerning What Matters
I'm not even a fake, fake American and I don't live next door - I'm across the world but yes, what happens to my country is affected by what happens to yours. We are all connected. I got home late last night from continental Europe, without out much hope of finding out the goings on on SNL until Sunday morning. And yet...barely 20 minutes after the live show, I was being sent links by my friends at the Proverbial Box who were determined that their 'Geographically Disadvantaged' friends overseas would not miss out.
Mr Cook - you've created a family out here; a network of people who wish you well and who wish each other well. I've said it before and I will keep saying it until someone places a bag over my head: when we cheer him on, we cheer ourselves on. I am cheering today and I will cheer you all on to vote on Tuesday. This stuff really matters.

Longing for gold
awesome
I hope someone points David and the EEB to your post, because this? is made of win.
NYC
I swear I felt like some character in one of your fan reports last night. There I was walking through Times Square back to Penn Station after the dress rehearsal. The group in front of me was talking about David and the band. They had obviously never heard of him before tonight except for the one woman who said "Wasn't he the guy on American Idol?". But they sure as hell know who he is now and they were impressed.
And there I was walking down 7th ave with tears in my eyes. Thinking OMFG I've totally lost it. I don't know David and he doesn't know me and I'm crying WTH is wrong with me. But because this was NYC and you can find everything there from the mundane to exciting any time of day or night.... I soon realized that me crying on the streets of the city didn't even qualify as semi abnormal. The people around me were much too busy watching the couple make out on the corner(they made Marilyn Manson look tame) and the guy in the Tin Man costume complete with a basket and Toto.
--

why do I need a bloody title for a comment?
Is that a Laurie Anderson ref I seek peeking out from under the covers there? 'Cause you know I live for those. Just like any real fake American

Wow...
Your blog this time gave me that warm fuzzy feeling I get when reading "Atlas Shrugged". Trains and train stations are so romantic in a strange way.
Awesomeness all around
Kaydeecee, as usual, you so rock!! First, your story about the boys was spot on. Couldn't have said it better myself. David and friendz have indeed serviced the INtarnets beautifully. And there's no morning-after regret.
As to the rest of your post, on NYC...that was pure, exquisite poetry. I've never been there. I grieved with my whole heart for your country during and after 9/11, and I feel I 'know' little bits of it from watching television shows. But I think you just encapsulated it magnificently.
And Wednesday....I hope we're crying tears of joy. Because what happens to your country affects mine next door, of course, and we always worry about the neighbours we love. I think I lean in the same direction as you (without getting too political) but i'll just say to all of you Americans, get out and vote, please!
