The Lure of David Cook’s concerts
I was reading the cougarslovecook forum last night looking at all the different shows that we were all going to and it got me thinking. Why are we all lured to multiple shows? Here we are all working adult women flying and driving to as many of David’s shows as we can fit into our budget. I have long since blocked out the curious looks and the eye rolling from friends and family when I tell them what I will be doing, or where I am traveling to, in the next few weeks or months. So I was thinking…why? Why do these smart talented women knock themselves out to go to so many shows?
The answer that I came up with may be a little different than you think. Probably the quick, first thought of most would be that we are groupies. I have certainly heard that enough in the last six months. But I believe it is more than just hearing great live music from an artist we admire. I think it is because after being virtual friends on a forum for months on end we want to meet each other. Shocked?
My first concert of the Declaration Tour was in Kansas City at the Ameristar Casino. There were 10 of us that met up from the forum and a few brought someone additional with them. Out of those ten I was meeting six of them for the first time. The others I had met at the American Idol shows in the summer of 2008. There is something magical about meeting like minded women in such a festive atmosphere. You couldn’t shut us up! The conversation may have started off with David being the center of all our attention but it quickly spread out to family, work and a variety of topics that any group of friends would chat about.
The thing is that most of us have been so vilified by our family and friends for our devotion to all things David Cook that it is a relief to be able to talk to people that won’t do the constant eye roll. Women that are eager to listen, even if it is for the umpteenth time, about you getting your photo with him, or an autograph or seeing him walking down the street or playing football by the bus at a venue. Telling each other about our fantasy setlist, or what we want to tell him if we ever meet him. Regaling each other with lengthy stories of the last concert we saw and what he was wearing or how much we love his new hair color…okay are you getting frightened yet?
In total I have been to five shows and in the next month I will be going to four more. Yes that seems like a lot of seeing the same thing right? No, I will be meeting more of the forum members not just from my forum but from others as well. Now I can say that my circle of friends has grown considerably since the Virginia Beach and Carrboro shows. Sitting in line for hours on end you meet the greatest people! The thing about David Cook fans is that everyone is so nice and very generous with anything they have. I believe that people will generally gravitate to an artist that they believe in and David Cook is a genuine, caring, lovable goofball that is consistently humble. So, that is the configuration of his group of loyal fans.
So why do we go to multiple shows? To meet the people that are lovin’ David Cook, to hear powerful vocals from him and the band and to, for this little snipit of time, be a part of a wonderful sisterhood with wonderful qualities just like the artist himself. If you haven’t listened to his music or been to one of his concerts you should. Who knows maybe we will meet one day sitting on a sidewalk waiting to get into a small general admission show and become great friends!
