Not Judging a Book By It's Cover-Lessons Learned

O.k, so I go to the store to pick up a few things. I get to the register to pay for my stuff and the cashier has emo hair with black and red streaks, black eyeliner (or guyliner) painted nails, the whole nine yards. And while I was kind of caught off guard at first, something occured to me. " imagine if that was pre-idol David Cook behind that counter?" After all, when I first saw David he pretty much looked the same way,and I have to painfully admit, even though I thought he had a really good voice, I wrote him off based on his appearance. As I paid this young man and collected my purchases, I made a mental note to look past the outward appearance and to the human being behind it all, because..... you never know.

Even though that is something that is taught to us when we are children, every once in a while you need a little reminder. : )

Well when I first saw him on AI I couldn't get past that hair of his in his audition. However, I thought he had a great voice so I was interested. I kind of zero'd in on him mostly because I liked his voice (rock is the best). I kept thinking he has a really nice face and lips that no guy should have but he clearly had talent though he lacked confidence. He was definitely in my top 4 list. Then he did "Hello" and that was it for me and that is when I became committed and starting voting which I wasn't going to do. I am glad he cleaned himself up though. At first I thought he couldn't afford a haircut--poor guy LOL. He has incredible range and lungs made of steel. It's funny, he said he had to sing in smoking bars so his lungs could take anything.

I vow to never watch A.I. again (2nd time for me). Let's face it--David Cook has made it very tough for future contestants who will always be compared to him. He really raised the bar.

Yep, I hear he was really grungy. Thank God he's over that. I bet his mom is happy too. LOL.

Every time I see someone now with spiky / dyed hair and tattoos, I don't judge them as rebellious, wild or risky anymore. I now think, "that could be another David Cook." I think he changed the image of a rocker for most. He has his college degree, is good to his family, and isn't afraid to show his sensitive side by displaying his emotions when he feels them.

The week he did "Hello" threw me for a loop. First, I loved Lionel Richie's version. Secondly, I couldn't believe a (gasp) rocker would choose to do such a loved but un-cool slow song. Thirdly, David's version blew me away. I remember watching his entire "Hello" performance with my mouth hanging open in shock. Like Simon Cowell said, "I loved it."

One more thing. There's this guy that works in the library I visit. He looks a lot like the Axium-era David Cook. He has the hair, tattoos, style, everything--and he's young and cute too. He's also really friendly and kind whenever I talk to him. Before, I would never believe someone who looked like that would be a librarian. Now I think - oh, another word nerd! Amazing. Smiling

I always thought he had a good voice and he completely captivated me after Hello, but what still floors me is how he went from average and sort of non-descript looking to drop dead gorgeous and sexy. I barely noticed his looks in the beginning and now I think he's one of the hottest guys I've seen. How does that happen???!!! I also look back on older pictures and wonder why I didn't think he was good looking all along. I think because he is the complete package (personality, intelligence, voice, looks, etc) and that makes him beautiful inside and out and in the beginning I didn't realize everything he was.

I completely agree with you. We should never judge people simply based on their outward appearance. Unfortunately, though, people do it allll the time. I see it happen a lot with teenagers...people see them in their sideways caps and baggy pants, and assume they're gang members or that they're just punk kids who are up to no good. That's just one example, of course. I'm sure there are *tons* more.

I <3 that picture of David!! Laughing out loud
