Now that I've heard the melody...

To be completely honest, I was very impressed with the lyrics of Light On, even if David didn't write it. But when I first heard it, I was rather underwhelmed with the melody. What I was expecting was a World I Know-like kind of melodic range and timbre. Being a melody-type of guy, the song's melody has to grip me, otherwise the song wouldn't do well for me, even if the lyrics were well-written. And the melody of Light On didn't really gripped me. I find its melodic range a bit generic and limited, and like what Imogen said, these type of songs are really not my cup of tea. I think I have to listen to it more in order to appreciate it.

I remember when I first heard Analog Heart, Makeover and Searchlights were the songs that really stood out because for me, they were the most melodious songs in the album (add to the fact that I also love their cryptically-poetic lyrics). I had to listen to The Truth, Straight Ahead, Silver and the other AH songs several times (often lasting for weeks) before I started to appreciate them. Maybe in the same way, I will come to appreciate Light On in time if I repeatedly listen to it and find a deeper meaning to it.

Curious as to how some people outside of the AI bubble would react to the song, I send the link of Light On to my cousin, who is a radio DJ, for an honest review. She likes DC and she rooted for him during the finale, but she's not a die-hard fan. She found it too ordinary. But, she also said "It's like, well I can't call it disappointing being a David Cook song.. its just, well.. not.. his time yet. I guess I also feel the same way. I'm not really disappointed because it's a David Cook song (one that he took time and effort to tell the title and post the lyrics to his fans before anyone else. Thanks David!!) and also because it's still the first single. I know that he promised that there will be twists and turns in the upcoming album, so I'm looking forward to hearing those songs as well.

On a positive note, I think David did well on this song. It really showcased his upper vocal range very well. And I think it's very emotive, but I need to listen to it more, and maybe I can appreciate it.

If this would offend anyone who loved the new single, I apologize. It's not in my intentions to offend. I just want to give my honest opinion to David and to others as to what I think of the song. As a classically-trained musician/violinist, I had my fair share of criticisms, some very harsh. In fact, one of my former violin teacher was a concertmaster in a renowned orchestra. He was very strict with me and would almost always criticize me. It was when I got a new teacher that I realized how helpful his criticisms were to further enhance my playing skills and musicianship. But I know that he was following and teaching me a rigid pedagogy that is required in the classical world. In the world of rock, there isn't really a "golden rule" on how to play. Therefore, I understand that I can only give subjective opinions which, I hope, would help David in the long run.

I know that he can't please everyone, what with fans as musically-diverse as us supporting him!! And of course I'll still support him, he is one of my top favorite musicians, alongside Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Maroon 5 and others. But that doesn't mean that I would like all of his songs. I don't want to place him in a pedestal, he is human after all, just like anyone of us. It all depends on our personal tastes and preferences. Peace to all!! Laughing out loud
