Fundraising Tips & Info:

Fundraising is the primary motive for participating in the Race for Hope - DC. The following are a few tips:

  • Set up your personalized web page with a picture and text. Potential supporters will be touched when there’s a story and a face attached to the cause.
  • Encourage your team members to solicit donations from friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, schoolmates and other acquaintances.
  • E-mail campaigns are a wonderful way to spread the word. Make sure all communications link readers to your team web page.
  • Be creative. Host a spaghetti dinner, have a car wash, a bake sale, a happy hour or a garage sale. Donate the proceeds to your team. Businesses such as bars and restaurants are often willing to donate a portion of a night's proceeds to a charitable cause all you have to do is ask.
  • Don't forget corporate matching gifts. Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by employees. Your gift to the Race for Hope - DC may be doubled or possibly tripled! Some companies also match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses. GO HERE FOR INFO!

Race Day Instructions

We have a meeting location for Team David Cook where everyone can meet pre-Race. Our meeting location will be in front of the Avenue Grill (1331 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20004) at the JW Marriott Hotel (next door to The Shops). Just look for “Team David Cook” signs! In order to give us time to organize and make our way to the Race Start location, please try to be at the team meeting location by 8:00am.

Registration for Runners/Walkers

Pre-registered:
If you registered prior to race day and need to pick-up your packet containing your bib number, timing device and T-shirt, proceed to the Packet Pick-up/Registration tent located southwest of Freedom Plaza on Pennsylvania Avenue. Locate your name and bib number on the pre-registered list located on the wall across from the tent. Once you find your bib number, proceed to the pre-registered area and get into the line that corresponds to your bib number. Look for signs with bib number ranges overhead along the tent. Tell the volunteers your bib number and they will hand you your bib, the timing device (if you registered to be timed) and a T-shirt. If you're using the timing device, it should be tied to your shoe according to the directions on the envelope containing the chip. Be sure to pick up safety pins to secure the bib to the front of your shirt.

If you need to register, go the Registration/Packet Pick-up tent located southwest of Freedom Plaza on Pennsylvania Avenue. New registrations should go to the west side of the tent and fill out the paperwork, pay the fee by check, cash or credit. The fee is $50. You will then receive a bib and a T-shirt. Timing devices are available on race day.

Volunteer Check-in
All volunteers should report to the Volunteer check-in table located on Freedom Plaza. You will receive your job assignment and your T-shirt. We ask that volunteers try to arrive as early as possible, beginning around 6:15am.

Other
Special Tribute Bibs:
Participants who want to recognize and honor someone special who has been affected by a brain tumor can pick up a bib inscribed "IN MEMORY OF" or "IN CELEBRATION OF" in the main registration area.

Brain Tumor Survivor Tent:
A brain tumor survivor tent will be located on Freedom Plaza in the southwest corner. We will also have a special bag check area for survivors behind this tent.

Bag Check:
We plan to offer a bag check service at Freedom Plaza for those participants who wish to leave a bag of dry clothes near the finish. However, with the number of participants expected, a bag check operation will quickly become overwhelmed if everyone tries to take advantage of this service. Volunteers will be manning the bag check area to monitor and help mark the bags. There will be markers and masking tape provided so place your bib number on a piece of tape and affix the tape to your bag. The bag check service closes at 10:30 a.m.

Start Line:
Announcements will be made throughout the hour prior to the race. About 20 minutes prior to the race start (8:40am) you should proceed to the start line. Please do not crowd to the front. If you are using the timing device, your individual time is started when you cross the starting line. Overall awards are based on this time.

Post-Race Refreshments:
Please be considerate of people finishing the race behind you, and take only one or two items at the food tables. We have sufficient quantities for everyone, but not if the early finishers load their backpacks with food.

Award Ceremony:
There will be an award ceremony immediately following the race. Awards and a presentation from the National Brain Tumor Society and Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure will be part of the program. We ask that all participants come show your support at this ceremony.
Top overall male and female and top overall male and female brain tumor survivors will be recognized at the Awards Ceremony. There are no age group awards.
