Review of Newport Beach (Taste of Newport Festival)
This was a killer set list, but some serious sound problems kept this from making it to the top of my concert lists. It was, of course, fantastic, as all of David Cook & The Anthemic's concerts are.
The bands that played all afternoon were a lot of fun, and quite good. Even the Doors cover band. I liked the Bolts. The guys play multiple instruments each, and 4 out of the five of them took lead vocals on different songs (the drummer with the Adam Lambert hair didn't sing, but did a very nice job drumming). All had pretty good voices. Not David or Andy, or Ryan or Phil, but very good. They're sort of punky/new wave/retro/alternative. They seemed pretty tight.
It was great seeing so many friends. Not just fellow fans, I'm talking a dozen or so people I now call friends. And another 2 dozen people who are wonderful acquaintances. Yes, folks, I counted around 40 people I knew there, and have spent time with at previous concerts & events.
Then there was the food. 30 or so restaurants and bars with kiosks. That was kind of great. A little expensive, but great.
The casual fans and newbies probably didn't notice any sound problems. Those of us who have been to multiple shows and know every nuance of the band could tell that, at various times, different channels were too hot or too low at various points. Even Kyle, who NEVER motions to anyone about anything, gave hand signals to the audio board to raise some levels. Andy's keyboard went really loud suddenly during LOTM. Again, not a huge thing, except for one other problem that annoyed me on night 2 at The Borgata in AC... when David speaks or sings softly, when he's close to the mic, it sounds like he's on helium. Drove me crazy during the banter LOL!
BUT.... David and the boys were in good moods and rocked it. Monty is a joy to behold. Andy, Kyle and Neal are sensations.
