The Ritual Ottawa Epic Concert Day and Concert of Epic Proportions Part 2
If you've read Part 1 you know I left you with me standing in line waiting to go in... if you haven't you might want to...
So, around 6:40 the line starts to move in...we file past some bouncers who are checking ID. Some of us over 19 joke about them checking our ID... one dude tells me he definitely wants to check mine and I tell him he's made my day! We get to the girl checking tickets and stamping our hand and there's a sign on the wall "David Cook $30" so I said "David Cook is only $30? I'll buy him for that!" but to my disappointment David wasn't for sale; just the remaining tickets to the show.
We get downstairs and enter the club. It's a long narrow room with the stage just to the left as we walk in..Just picture a rectangle rested on the long side... stage on left, bar on far right .. such a tiny stage only two or three feet off the floor. It's GA standing only so those in the front row are literally touching the stage with their knees; no barriers. I've only got two rows of people in front of me and it's not even full rows, we are sort of mingled. Me and the two women I met are dead centre... but Neal and Andy sides are mere paces away so full view of everything on the stage. The stage is already set with Kyle's drum set for Jeremy although it looks to me like not all his equipment would fit there so it may be scaled down a tiny bit but not sure. The rubber chickens are out in full force. Like some crazy escapees from the St. Hubert/Swiss Chalet chicken farm they are all over the stage. Bikini chicken girl, navy/sailor chicken boy, Canadian chicken.. and then lots of other toys..Ken Griffey Jr. (Seattle Mariners) bobble head, giant fist.. ah boys will be boys.
The Opening Act: That Aint No Raine Maide or Phil Marshall!!
The opening act came on... basically George Costanza (Seinfeld) but without the glasses and with some hair (for now). He comes out takes one look at the crowd and says "oh it's all women!" like a nervous schoolboy.. (btw it wasn't all women but most of the front rows were!).. he says, "I'm kind of nervous ... this was a last minute thing" He says his name is Davey, but he's not David Cook.. (uh buddy we all know what he looks like so you're ok; we weren't mistaking you for him) He calls him self Male Nurse... (think that's his day job?) I'm thinking...who knew we'd get a male nurse AND the DR. in one night!! Must be all that H1N1 going around... Anyway, he tells us he'd never heard of David Cook until today as he doesn't have a tv .. poor musician and all. We feel sorry for him so cheer louder. We are really kind to him and show him some love..he seems more shocked than we are!! He actually starts to feel a bit better ... says "wow this is going better than I thought".. At one point he says he appreciates being given this opportunity from David and dedicates a song to him.. It's a song he wrote for his mother... We all "awww" for him. He still says "this is kind of nervewracking!' No F. kidding buddy!! You're opening for David Cook to a packed house of Canadians who've been schlepping across the united freaking states or in davedrought and are ready to plode with anticipation for DC on hometurf!!! Nervewracking is an understatement!! At one point he tries to get us excited about David.. (like he even has to try).. he quickly realizes that just saying "David Cook" will elicit screams, cheers, a whole lot of noise from us.. and says "I should call my Dad and tell him I'm on stage and then quietly say *David Cook* to you guys and let my Dad hear the cheers (we laugh) ..but my phone doesn't work" more poor musician sympathy from us. He keeps asking TC how much longer he has as if he's worried he doesn't have enough songs or can't remember them...So he wraps up his set and then offers the crowd some "cassettes" ; gotta love him!! Some nice people say they'll take one.. he only has 4 (how sweet) and they ask him to sign them. Man, we Canadians are a kind bunch... can you see that happening in NYC or Jersey!! Yeah, me neither! The whole time the Male Nurse Davey is on I'm thinking ..I wonder what is going through David Cook's mind right now if he's watching this!!!
The crew starts the final prep for DCATA.. Andy's mic was already on stage with signed pics in place.. They bring out David's.. 10 pics... 10 lucky people tonight. They tape down the set list. I lean in to the stage (remember I was that close) and take a picture but don't look .. I love surprises. I hear the girl beside me look at her picture and say "I think it's similar to last night" OMG are we getting Acoustic tonight. Please concert gods... make it so! The stage is ready.. the lights dim a little, the crowd moves forward a little but still we have room to move : no mosh pit, just snug. It's 8:05 and AC/DC (how I love those initials) starts to play and thanks to my hubby I know all their songs... It's "I've Got Big Balls" Really Dave?.. or was that NFT's choice? The anticipation in the room is palpable.. thick and rich like a smoothie made of David's voice mixed with a side order of Andy! They are walking on the stage and we are all freaking out!! Big Balls is still playing while they get their places... Neal is plugged in and starts the intro to Heroes with Jeremy banging on drums.. and we are cheering loud!! Then David starts... and the epic show begins...."As the sun goes down infront of me... reminds me where I want to be .. with you and you alone...
Quick update from Fashion Televison: Rockstar Fashion File
David in the hotness I described in Part 1 sans hoodie...the grey very fitted pants,(pantz manager please order extra of these to ensure they stay on the wardrobe rotation) darkgrey T, croc/snake boots. Awesome hair with the minor hair cut but nothing drastic... beautifully trimmed beard... wearing the black rose necklace and some new one.. and seems he got the matching black rose bracelet too and a few other bracelets (no pearl bracelet.. well come on it's night club not a country club what were you expecting?) on his right hand. The Grey Matters, Lindsay Rose, and some other plastic band are back on the left hand.
Neal in black jeans, white T and Levi's denim jacket (yes I can see the red tab I'm that close) with sleeves rolled up. Hair looking awesome as usual and sporting some dude sideburns!!
Andy in pink shirt and white pants...wait no I'm kidding.. he was in ..you guessed it.. black shirt (lots of unbuttoned buttons) and black jeans... with lovely shiny, bouncy black hair and some junior slim mutton chops (not liking these so much but to each their own)
Monty looking very fine with awesome beard, nicely trimmed (ok I've got a facial hair thing.. Sue me) and cool patterned dark grey on dark grey t-shirt and dark jeans with nice hat.. Must have colour coordinated with David. Nice boys, very nice!
Jeremy wearing a yellow T."29 and holding" Hey, aren't we all buddy, aren't we all!!
So done with Fashion Television, back to the rock show... Heroes as opener is in progress, Good Lord he sounds amazing in this place.. Andy's backup vocals are soaring... David is stepping forward and leaning over us... we could touch him (but don't... not that we didn't want to... )David is already asking "How you doing Ottawa" and we cheer loudly! He's smiling, throwing a pic and seems to love the "math never lies" of tonight: small stage+small venue+300 fans hungry for him= Good times!!! And did I mention how FG he looks tonight because it needs to be said repeatedly.
I think this is where David introduced Jeremy by talking about the Canadian bands he loves and how when you're into music you dream about doing something with the bands you idolize and here was one of the moments for him. It was interrupted a bit by one fan but mostly every one was intently listening to what he was saying and enjoying it all. I think he plugged OLP's new cd as ehe said he was "contractually obligated to " for having Jeremy with him. Then we're onto Mr. Sensitive... Amazing.. Amazing.. Amazing. That rocked..I lean forward to give him the big Canadian flag I brought for them.. Dave says something like "yeah, pass that forward " He holds it up (lots of cheers)and then holds it infront of him lengthwise like a long towel. And then says "it's kind of like a reveal" and lets it drop to the floor. We're Canadian so we don't freak out..We knew what he meant.. He's American and realizes that was a flag he was holding .. he picks it up and says something about not dropping our flag to the floor. He passes it to Neal and mentions the cape twitter and that it would be good for Neal as a cape... Neal doesn't bite (well not on a first date I'm sure) but I' m think he'll be wearing it sekritly fore the next few nights while he dreams of his good times in Canada.
Banter about venue and this is first time playing a place with a disco ball hanging in the middle of the room that he could touch from the stage! Yes, it was small and we were loving it. Some "I love you" and "I love you too" then introducing Honest and asking for our hands in the air with a demonstration... OMG major arm/tat porn. Ded.. just Ded!! Then into Honest.. in my top tier (tm:Dave) of DC songs. I think I've had it at every show maybe and can't believe that I got it again. They rocked this and the Dr sings so sweetly. We need more of that (tm: David)
Maybe some banter here, I can't remember...
Then it's Lie.. Serious 'ploding about to happen in Nation's capital!! His voice floats past me on waves of alpha.. and I'm in serious davetrance.. he readies for a capella and shushes us and says "this could be cool" we don't need much telling so we're mostly quiet. and he steps one step forward and outfront and gives us the bare, rich a cappella; a little huskier but so divine. I think it was here the house phone starts to ring in the background and he starts to smile and laughs to himself. Just as he gets to the last verse he says "You guys are almost too quiet.. someone shouts out "we're just listening" so we cheer and he says "you can do better than that" and we do! What an amazing performance. So hard to top, but wait we're talking about DC... and he goes over to Andy, then Monty, Neal, and speaks to them.. He tell us "this wasn't on the set list...and I haven'tpracticed it... if it's bad blame Andy (WTF!)" and breaks into Living On a Prayer! And so the Acoustic Set begins.. I find out later he has swapped this for Avalanche and I'm ok with this. We are all ecstatic. I for one, have never heard that in a show and it was awesome. Oh Dave you've come along way since Aug 2007 and the faux hawk days.. and we thank you for it. Some one says "Bring it home" and he starts laughing and then asks us to sing with him... Oh living on a prayer.. take my hand ... oh living on prayer..
Not sure if there was any banter in between LOAP and next song..maybe this was the "Everyone here is over 19 right ? So I can say F---, " and then "and in the USA on youtube in about an hour and in two hours I lose my contract with RCA...well no 3 hours.. it takes time to process the paperwork.." I thought oh we might be getting MITB..and hoped for acoustic ... and we did. He also said he hadn't thought this through (meaning the change of Avalanche for LOAP) as he now "had just done a cover and the next one was a cover...but you guys don't mind, right?" And we certainly didn't... This was amazing for me. I love this song and honestly, I think I might have been one of the few, certainly from those around me. Barely anyone was singing along, so my voice was loud among the crowd sorry if I spoiled anyone's video.. I think that this was the anchor for me getting so much eye contact from Andy all night long...and some from Dave during this song. Especially, Andy.. he seemed to need/want to connect with someone enjoying the song and I definietly was. I know I took some video of this and then my camera battery overheated and shut off for a while.. so serious BO'R for this one on video but amazing in person. At first I think the little amoung of singing along maybe made David unsure of the crowd a little ..but they warmed up to the yay yay yay yay yay yay yay part eventually.
Somewhere in all these acoustic songs I think after MITB he bantered about calling the DR back on stage but Neal was already there and that he was going to take care of the guitar on the next song. Then he mentioned Andy was going to take care of the piano and being drunk. He was opening a bottle of beer as David called attention to him .I have this banter and can edit this later when I watch it again.. no battery left in my camera to watch it now. Then they went into a beautiful acoustic version of LOTM..This is such a great song...
With the acoustic set over David welcomed back Monty and Jeremy to the stage and they did the rest of the show all plugged in. They led off with I Did it For You .. and yes, OMG, it rocked. They were on FIRE..the contrast between this rocked out version and the acoustic set we had just heard was awesome and made this performance even more intense, as if that is even possible!! . I love that this and Mr. Senstive have really taken on a new life and new energy on the tour.
Keeping the energy going they went into IJDIYAT making it 3 covers so far... but none of us really cared. At somepoint in the evening someone said "What about Billie Jean?' and he replied "What about it?" or "Yeah , what about Billie Jean?" but obviously was not interested in playing it. IJDIYAT was just as rocked out ad IDIFY and was bringing the house down. There was so much energy in the room. I continued to get major eye contact from Andy and was loving everyminute of it.
From this they went into Declaration and it totally rocked. The banter was about "who has the record" "just pretend you have" If you have it you'l know this song, if you don't hopefully you'll like it and buy the record" "record going Gold in Canada before they even got up here to do a show" "needing to get up to Canada, get up to Canada," "hoping we had not forgotten him as he had not been here until now" Montreal and Ottawa showing him they hadn't type of comment
Then I realize he's readying for TWIK with that ultra long intro. I think it's just David and Andy on stage. Andy was deep in concentration with the guitar and it was lovely. He has us sing along to this song Just love this song and now have heard it 3 times.. Niagara, Owens and this.
The Non-Encore Encore:
The venue was so tiny and the stage so tight that David ended up talking to us about the "encore" . He said this is normally the time of the show when they would leave the stage (those who just heard "leave the stage" aawed but he reiterated "normally" in his best "correcting voice") and that we'd cheer for them to come back but as there was really no place to go they would just stay and play the "encore" . We were fine with that .. no need to have them leave. so off they went into Light On which everyone loved and sang along to, and then closing with Come Back To Me. For CBTM he had us sing the first verse and chorus which everyone did really well( I guess this might be a marker for him on how well the record is doing or how much radion play if everyone know the words) He joined in for the rest of the verses and chorus and we continued to sing along. Andy's back up vocals were amazing in this song. I heard them like this at Owens and was blown away. It sounded even better in this room with us being only 2 feet away from him.
On with the house lights...people scrambling for dropped pics. I got a set list...someone wanted a chicken.. crew said "No way!" I guess they're pretty valuable!
A Bounty of Banter:
There was so much banter in Ottawa it was incredible. This is the chattyDave that I love...It's hard to remember when it all took place but random bits till I can check my vids...having a good time, are we cos if we were we'd have given him a beer by now (someone eventually did), if not he could just leave now and the pretend turn back to us. Poutine, logistics: likes FF, cheese, gravy.. needed to run more today. Andy tried it, not Neal (on liquid diet at the time) Jeremy trying to sell him his car/house, living in Canada, Canada like Florida (not), taking calls from fan, only one call at at time, this is the David Cook show what's your question, bad impression of whatever that was. Car sales man, has a Lexus to sell, just kidding.. we all say we'll buy it. The one sign "Montreal misses you will you come back to us?" and "I'll make you a deal I'll come back to Montreal only if Ottawa has us back too? T-shirt on stage. he picked up read it and put it behind him on the back speakers..guess he didn't want to mention it... then the paper airplane. He picked that up and read it, sort of laughed and then gave it to Monty who read it and made a weird face/laughed.. neither told us what is said. Banter about lots of hazards/items on stage floor
Monty: I note that I have not mentioned Monty other than the fashion update, the return to the stage, and the note. Monty was great! He moved around alot, interacted a lot with Andy and Neal. Lots of good pics of him with those guys. I couldn't tell from my view point as Dave was blocking Jeremy (sorry J) but I think Monty interacted with Jeremy a lot too. Monty really works well with the band, and seems to really enjoy himself up there. I wish he was a keeper for the band.. At this point in the showl hoping to meet Monty after the show to complet my Full House... fingers crossed!
Stay tuned for Part 3 (must drive home now) The Neal HugFest by the buses.. David signing, Jeremy Signing...and more ..DLC if you're reading... get ready girl, get ready!!

Come to Texas!
Loved your recap I & II!!! What a lucky girl to have so many encounters with DC and most of The Anthemic! I'm so excited that they will be coming to Houston. I think I need to pay for you to fly down and be my guest to the show, maybe some of that good luck will rub-off and I'll get to meet them, too!

loved it!
I love your recaps of the concert, the details are fabulous! Wow, to be so close at such a small venue must've been incredible. And eye contact with Andy, go you! Thank you for remembering so many small details of the banter, Chatty Dave is indeed fun.
Show recaps
I truly LOVED reading the recaps - waiting for the 3rd portion. Thanks for putting them to print. You obviously had a great weekend albeit just a bit more "exciting" than mine - what with the Dave, Neil encounters and all.
Hope you are able to get DC/RCA whoever thinking about the George Strombolopous venue - that would really really cool.
Bye for now
Lorraine (aka cookfantoo)
Neal HugFest?
Can I officially hate you? Seriously. I am in pain.
Small=Intimate
How wonderful to experience a DCATA concert in a small setting. It really gives Dave the chance to let his hair down a little and bring a nostolgic (for him) vibe to the show. Plugged and accoustic FTW! Lucky, lucky, girl. Epic pre-show, epic show, and now you hint that part 3 will be epic as well. Lucky, lucky, girl. and deserving.
Awesome, part II!
I loved the fashion report. LOL. You almost had me when you said Andy was wearing a pink shirt. He's been wearing a ton of black lately, which I have no objection to. But if the mutton chops get any longer I may have to tell him to stop neglecting his shaver.
I'm glad at least *someone* appeared to be enjoying MITB. Maybe not a lot of folks there were familiar with the song.
That's pretty cool that it was such a small venue. Those are the best ones!
