Sayreville....Starland Ballroom

I really wasn’t looking for any more shows to get to….especially a general admission show…ugh! I’m too old for this stuff. But one of the ladies from my other playground hasn’t seen him with the band yet, and she was taking her daughter, plus another one of the ladies was meeting up with her there. ….I knew I had to go. Then Michel emailed me and said she wanted to go and was going to see if Cupcake wanted to come. It turned out that cupcake couldn’t make it…and that broke my heart…no Busted Girl Trio reunion…but that’s when I had the brilliant idea of bringing my little guy! Thank goodness for Michel who brought a cute little “pig-out” game…it kept my sweet little guy occupied and laughing….actually I’m trying to figure out who was more entertained…Michel or my son!

I picked up Michel and we drove to the venue…my other naughty friends were there about an hour before us, so they were a little more hot and sweaty than we were, but it was fun. We saw the bus, Dublin, heard part of the sound check…they were right there…we could have opened up the door and run in. We felt it wasn’t worth it seeing as we already invested too much time in line to be thrown out now! We walked around a bit…thank goodness for the VFW hall across the street that provided us a clean bathroom and cheap water…they were so nice, I kinda thought that we weren’t in Jersey anymore, just very unexpected! Thank goodness for the parking passes. As we walked back to the line from the hall we saw the non-parking people were lined up from the front of the building to the back, and then it snaked back to the front again…yikes!

Okay…so they let us in…it’s dark, and cool…yay! We make our way to the front, there is a mass of people center stage, we discussed it before hand and we decided we would rather be closer, and off to side. We knew Neal’s side was the wild side but we love Andy too, so that is where we headed, We needed to check out Monty to make sure that he was shown some proper love..lol.. So we staked our claim and put the yougun’s up front by the barrier…so then we waited some more…

Hot Chelle Rae…the opening band…let’s just say they weren’t my speed…and leave it at that.. Hot Chelle Rae mentioned that they had played there before, but it wasn’t like this and that the crowd was loud…umm…loud? Just wait my friends. So the stage is being broken down and re-set for the boys. One of David’s crew sees the two kids and pulls out two guitar pics and give one to each of them. Believe me…he just made my son’s night!

But now it goes dark…really dark…and quiet…..we feel it in the air. It’s funny, I don’t remember doing it, but I just know we are standing there grinning our faces off. I wish I could have had a picture of the bunch of us standing there in the dark, beaming…and we see the shadows coming onto the stage…the crowd is screaming. You could feel the surge of energy. I braced myself and my arms on the barrier to make sure the kids were okay…lol. The band took their spots on stage and *boom* opens up with Heros…wow! The crowd was LOUD! The lights were glaring…The music was loud…. but the screaming was LOUDER! Can you imagine that? The music didn’t hurt my ears, but the crowd did. I think at that point if Hot Chelle Rae was anywhere in that room, they were probably crawling under a table in embarrassment at saying we were loud for them…lol. I also remember as the lights came up and we saw..."the shirt"...I think all four of us looked at each other with our jaws dropping open..lmao. Funny to have four woman have the same reaction. The kids...well...they notices nothing..lol.

It was so weird to see David right there so close. I mean, he was larger than life right there to me….I know, I’m a sap, but I just seeing him looming over us, it was just surreal. We have all oogled the pictures, and drooled at the youtubes….but there he was…lol. He seemed so HUGE! It was all those incredible pictures that we see…only he was right there!

You guys all know the setlist…I’m just happy because I got my Straight Ahead, and my ADAM….I never got to woa, woa in Atlantic City…lol. I had a feeling that we were going to get the same setlist which was certainly fine for me. Now…let me see if I can remember anything from the show…lol. I was so looking forward to Lie…the a capella part was going to kill me…and he stepped away from the mic when he did it, and all of a sudden the room was filled with the crowd singing it with him. I was so mad at first…I wanted to hear that voice …lol. Then I realized what a cool moment that was…he had gotten everyone so riled up that they couldn’t stop singing…I mean really, you had to know what the man was doing up there stepping away from the mic…and how insane was it that you could still hear his voice over the crowd…but just for next time people….DON’T sing that part with him!!

I really didn’t notice too much of what was happening on the stage…lol. I tried, I swear, I did. Neal killed the guitar, especially on IJDIYAT. Kyle was out there hair flinging as usual. Andy was right in front of us playing and singing, right.in.front.of.us….but I just couldn’t not watch David…lol. I have to say. Monty pretty much won me over last night…at least for the next six weeks. He was out there playing the bass line, keeping the beat, smiling, laughing….and singing….he doesn’t have a mic and he’s standing there belting it out, it was fun to watch him up there.

Anyway…the concert as a whole…David’s voice was amazing, his banter was funny, the performance was fun and not forced, he was as incredibly handsome as ever. What more could you ask for…oh yeah…I know, you could ask for a dear son who has a bigger bladder that could make it through the entire set with out having to pee! I questioned my wisdom at telling my son to keep hydrated while we were standing in line outside…hmm…he made one bathroom run when we first got there so I thought we’d be okay. Now the boys were starting Bar ba sol (my son’s favorite, too...and no, he doesn’t have the same visions of the stripper poles as we do..lol)
As the song starts he turns and tells me the sad news of having to go to the bathroom….let me tell you, I should get mother of the year award for leaving my spot and taking him…lol. It was a very difficult decision. Actually I wasn’t so worried about missing the song as I was about getting to the bathroom! It was sooo packed that trying to squeeze through this mass of people was almost impossible. Again..thank goodness for Michel…I don’t know how she did it, but she saves our spots!! We made it and made it back to our spot right in front…unbelievable…I was ready to have to give up our prime location after we left…again…are we still in Jersey?

I wondered about bringing my son…he had said from the time I went to my first concert that he would love to go. I wasn’t so sure he was going to love it so much. Last night I thought the day was pretty much a wash for him...until this morning. From the minute he got up, to the minute I dropped him off at camp…the concert and David was all he could talk about. He was so excited this morning. I guess he just needed it all to sink in. I mean, how much David can a 10 year old take in at on time?

But the concert was incredible….I don’t know if I would ever do another General Admission again..lol. I certainly wouldn’t stand outside in lines for hours again…but do I regret doing it? Not at all! It was an incredible time, spent with some extraordinarily fun people.

Now...can September please come more quickly!!??

Wow

Thanks for your review, sounds like a fabulous time. I'm so glad you took your son, this will be a favorite memory for both of you. But having to leave during Bar-ba-sol, argh! I decided against the general admission show in LA - I'm too claustrophobic and being under tall makes it all worse. I share your feeling about the sing-a-long during Lie. I just wish everyone would stop singing and the screaming is unbearable. Hopefully they will put out a live album someday that filters out the crowd noise so you can really hear David sing.

SO glad your show was such a wonderful experience and that your little guy had a great time too!
We WILL ALL go to a show together one day...if Michel promises to bring the piggie game aaaaaand if you will bring me to powder my nose when I have to go.
xox

So I won't even try! Thanks Crisis for this wonderful write-up. Everyone else--I will mention that Crisis has a really nice kid even if he beat me many times at the Pig game! (little rubber pigs that you roll like dice and get points for depending on what position they land in). Smiling

I love this. I sure wish I could've been there!! But having read your wonderful account, I feel like I was. And I think you definitely deserve mother of the year. And, I guess this means you won't be standing in line at Nokia for the opportunity to stand inside?? lol. Big monkey hug to you.

So your son is totally Cookiefide at a age of 10 how freaking cute is that Thanks for sharing you great night

=)

"He seemed so HUGE!"... lmao!! Are you surprised I'm laughing over that comment? So happy you and Michel could share such a great experience! Luv you both!
