Sunfest, May 2, 2009 -- Declaration Tour

So, it’s taken me almost a full week to write my recap, but I haven’t had much inspiration to write anything, and honestly, I still don’t. However, I figured I better write down SOMETHING before much of the day becomes a blur!

I went to Sunfest with my dad. This was my first time on the east coast of Florida, what can I say- David brings out the best in me. We left at 9:30 AM and arrived to our hotel at about 2:00. I called Kristen (!!) to find out where she was at- and she told me she was standing right in front of “the guys” (Joey, Andy, & Kyle)!! I did some getting ready, and we FINALLY arrived at Sunfest at about 3ish. I couldn’t believe how many people were there. It was worse than Disney World. I hate crowds of people, but I did this for David. I went right to the merch table (definitely the place to be…) and purchased the official tour t-shirt, even though half the tour dates (including Sunfest) aren’t on there. I went over to watch the Gin Blossoms perform, and attempted calling Kristen to finally meet up with her. That was a joke—it was too loud to hear anything over a cell phone. We FINALLY found each other, and squee’d for awhile. She told me she spotted David & Neal for a few minutes, but didn't get a chance to talk to them. We basically just walked around all day and checked out Sunfest, and sat in the grass watching some random band. She convinced me to go back to the merch table and purchase the sweatshirt & a keychain for myself and one for my sister. I’m happy I did, but I spent every last dollar I had!

The second time I went back to the merch table, Joey was there!! What timing =) I don’t know what it is with me, when I get around these guys, I get so “starstruck” and become mute. I wasn’t even nervous, just excited. [the rest of this paragraph was pretty much written by Kristen, for I have a foggy memory of our convo with Joey...] Kristen asked him if he would be running with David in the Race For Hope, or at least going to D.C. with him and he said "nope, he's on his own with that one." She asked if David was planning on running or if he was going to walk it and said something to the effect of "he'd better run! He better not wuss out and walk it! Even if he gets sick at the end, he'd better run." We asked "you think he's gonna get sick?" and Joey said "oh yeah." Such confidence in his friend/boss! So she asked where they were going instead, if they planned on soaking up some Florida sun during their day off and was told that they were headed to "Atlanta..... I think..... I never know where we're going." He said he only checks the itinerary a day or two ahead, because it's just too daunting, and said that he was not looking forward to the 20-hour flight they had coming up for their gig in the Philippines. I said "so, Kristen tells me that you don't use any products in your curly hair?" (Kristen and I have curls and we're both insanely jealous of Joey's gorgeous locks). Joey admitted to sometimes using some Redken leave-in-something-or-other, but most of the time, nothing. Kristen said to him that I straighten my hair. "Yeah, I've tried that" he said. "So we heard..." We giggled. "That did not go well" Joey admitted, and elaborated to say that to do it right, you need like an hour, but they only did like ten minutes, so only the top layer of his hair got straightened and underneath it was all curly still. "At least it was a small crowd that night, and we were on the same level as them and so only the front could see really, so I didn't embarrass myself in front of too many people" he said. (Does he not know about youtube???) Kristen then said to Joey that we had seen that particular shirt a lot and asked if it had any special significance to him and he said that no, it's just a shirt he's had for a long time, so she offered to send a call out to the fanbase to get him new shirts. He laughed and said no, that it'll get rotated out eventually, that he only has like 7 shirts with him and they do laundry about once a week. Joey then excused himself, so he could go find some shade, so we thanked him for chatting with us.

I hung out with my dad and Kristen the rest of the day, trying to stay cool, calm, and collected. Not that you care, but the place only had disgusting porta-potties. EW! Especially with this swine flu going around, I was freaked out not being able to officially wash my hands the whole day- just antibacterial gel. We met some fellow DCO David fans!! If you’re reading this, send me a PM and say hi! I can’t remember most of your usernames! It was really great to meet you all!

We continued to check out the merch booth throughout the day just to make sure we weren’t missing out on seeing any more certain rock stars. By then I realized I wouldn’t be getting my chance to meet the rest of the guys (=(), and if I would have been there ONE HOUR earlier, I would have met Andy & Kyle with Kristen! Oh well… next time, I hope.

At about 8pm, an hour and a half before the show started, I started getting EXTREMELY anxious/nervous/excited… and didn’t want to wait any longer to see David. We were sitting by the water and I was just jumping around. Finally it was 9:00, and we decided to go to our seats. We got our hands stamped (skull stamp FTW!) at the reserved seating entrance and found our seats. I was so darn excited I could not contain myself. FINALLY the show began… there were THOUSANDS of people there, and everyone (well, mostly everyone) seemed to really enjoy the show.

The setlist:
The World I Know
Heroes
We're Only Honest When We're Sleeping
Declaration
Life On The Moon
Breathe Tonight
Avalanche
Kiss On The Neck
Mr. Sensitive
Straight Ahead
Lie
Hot For Teacher
Come Back To Me
2 Encores:
Light On
BarBaSol
Just a bit disappointed I wasn’t able to hear ADAM in person.

The show was (obviously) AMAZING, incredible… everything that David is. I don’t have to go on about that, you all know what kind of show he puts on. During Straight Ahead, he did run out into the crowd in attempt to be more “connected” with the people sitting on the lawn, and he got in “trouble” with his tour manager. He also introduced the Princess of Brunei, saying she flew all the way there just to see him perform. Then during Hot for Teacher (SEXY), we witnessed a first… David climbing the scaffolding after he introduced Neal. I literally covered my eyes, like “ohh nooo David what are you thinking!” I was worried about him getting hurt. I didn’t take many pictures, because my camera is absolutely anti-concert, but I took video of MOST of the concert (not full songs, except H4T & Bar-ba-sol). Seeing Hot for Teacher & Bar-ba-sol live was worth every penny (lots of pennies) that I spent to travel to see David.

When it was over I was so sad… I had been waiting for this show for SO long and that was it. I met up with Kristen again, and we had hopes of seeing the guys after the show, but we figured it wouldn’t happen since David had to fly out for the race in D.C., plus gates were surrounding the busses, making it impossible to be able to meet anyone.

This is, unfortunately, the only show I will be able to attend on this leg of the tour. I am desparately hoping to get my chance to see him in a small, intimate, college-type venue. Florida loves you, David... come back to us!!

I could not believe it when I got the news that Adam passed 52 minutes after our show ended. I have absolutely been grieving just like the rest of us. <3
