William and Mary Show 3-28-09

I've never been moved before to write down my experiences of a show before, so forgive me if it is awkward and rambles at times. I just need to type it all out to help process it all.

D and I arrived in the late afternoon, and it became apparent to us very quickly that the college hadn't expected on us Cook fans descending upon them so soon. [I have to take this moment to give the student event staff credit- they did a great job, and we very polite to all of the fans who asked them countless times what was going on.] We met up with some fans we had met during the summer tour, and made some new friends while waiting in line (Snark FTW!) It was nice to see that the guys were able to wander around the building without fans calling attention to them (for the most part). After what seemed like forever, we were let upstairs into the ballroom where the show was held. D, myself, and our new snarky friends managed to make it close up to the front...maybe 4 rows back on Andy's side. We were surrounded by college kids, who seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

I enjoyed Ryan's set a lot more this time than I had in Atlantic City. Maybe it was the intimate nature of the venue, but he seemed to be letting the music escape from inside him this time, rather than "performing"...which is just a matter of my own personal taste. I thought "Breathe" was beautiful, and his banter with a future English teacher had me cracking up. I would recommend he steer away from jumping up on tiny amps...there was a moment I truly thought he was going to fall off the stage. Kudos for the impressive save.

When Dave came out singing TWIK, I knew we were in for quite I show. I've seen Dave more times than I care to mention, and this performance ranked up there with when I saw him perform "Permanent" for the first time at Jingle Ball. There was something so honest and vulnerable about the way he sang the song, I was wiping away tears at the conclusion. [I'm not going to comment or speculate about what I think David was feeling during the show, so if I stop making sense, bear with me- that's why.] He played his gorgeous white Les Paul for most of the set, which was PHENOMENAL. "Lie" was also a huge favorite of mine...I love the way they have reworked in accompaniment so it gradual builds as the song progresses. I walked away from last night's show more impressed than ever with David's level of professionalism. He just kept giving back to fans, and it was a beautiful sight to behold. The banter was hysterical, especially with the little girl after HFT..."I'm pretty sure I'm in love with you..."

I'm still processing the announcement Dave made about canceling the shows. As soon as he started speaking, D and I reached for each others hand. No matter what is really going on, in that moment, my heart fell to the pit of my stomach. You could hear a pin drop the entire time he was speaking (which was a visible change from all the screaming that had been going on throughout the show). And then the most beautiful thing happened. As soon as David finished speaking, there was a visible outpouring of love and support. All throughout the room, people started yelling out, "We love you David." During "Light On", people were singing along as loud as the could. It was both heartbreaking and heartwarming. I hope all fans can continue to show this kind of support while respecting David's privacy.

It was a roller coaster of a show, but I'm thankful that I was able to experience it. Here's my last video, HFT, as well as my pictures from the show.

Great recap, you completely captured many of the same thoughts and emotions I had that night - the highs and the lows. There was definitely a "we're in this together" vibe at this concert - I was on the Neal side with 2 new DC friends and I'm so glad we were there together. Those "outside the fandom" may not get it, but there's a true community of love and support here.
