In order to create a chart ranking, YES gives a song 1 point for each time it is played on a station and 1 point for each "yes" vote. It takes away 1 point for each "no" vote. Then it compares the number of points a song receives in a weeks time to all other songs that are played by that station. The song receiving the highest number of points in a weeks time is first place, the next highest second place, etc.

The placement on YES ranking is NOT the same as the station's own ranking - but it comes very close. YES ranking does not effect how many times a station will play a song - however, the number of times a station plays a song effects YES ranking.

YES recalculates chart ranking every 24 hours.

So when a song receives it's first play on a station it is ranked against songs that have already been playing for a week. It's first day of play with only 1 or 2 plays may rank it in the two or three hundreds depending on how many songs a station plays during a typical week. If it is steadily played even one or two times a day - it will rapidly gain chart placement over the first week - as it begins to be compared with other songs that have had steady play over a weeks time.

The ranking will then begin to stabilize and reflect the number of times it is played each day by a station. 5 to 6 plays a day might give it a ranking of 10 or better on an HAC station, 3 to 4 plays a day might give it a ranking in the teens. However, Top 40 stations repeat their songs much more frequently so 5 to 6 plays a day on a Top 40 station may not achieve a ranking of 10 or better. (These numbers are just rough estimates from past experience - the numbers needed to achieve top 10 ranking differ from station to station.)
