but, David, I don't get the storyline either (I agree with several other fans). The lyrics are so deep, and the storyline is so superficial. Not sure how much control you had on this, but there is so much more that could have been done given the complexity and length of the song. I had imagined the video would have a more mature theme---either US soldier going to war, or a husband/wife leaving the other behind, or impending death of a loved one....or a combination of many stories illustrating the imagery of a light left on as a "placeholder" until they return. . .
I absolutely love the backlight on the football field and the intimacy of your breath and the intensity of your eyes...you sing with such emotion (and this is an emotional song). But the storyline of the "high school jerk vs. nice girl/good guy wins girl" is not as deep as the song deserves.
