"It is also true that no rock artist can build a sustainable career with a fanbase primarily composed of older fans gathered from a TV reality show."
Maybe not with a fan base entirely made up of older fans. But It certainly couldn't hurt David to have a large percentage in that demographic. Being older doesn't mean a person doesn't like rock or won't buy a rocker's concert tickets and albums for many years to come. I grew up listening to some of the greatest rock ever written or performed. I went to some amazing concerts and still go to many. I have expendable income to blow on tickets, albums and merch.
My kids on the other hand are in that college age demographic that David and his people are trying to win over. David is playing a show at my son's college. I'm hoping that he and his friends will go and give David the chance to win them over with a great live performance. But I have to wonder...What happens next. If my son and his friends like David they may DL a few songs from itunes. But that's about all they have money for. They're broke college kids and with the current job market chances are they'll be broke for a couple more years. They usually go to any concert on campus because it's cheap. They rarely go to concerts at outside venues where the ticket prices normally range from $50-$100.
If you really think about it you have to laugh. Next year if Dave tours regular venues and my son wants to see him again, he will be coming to me for money to buy a ticket because the pay for his internship through school just about covers his gas to and from the office. I wonder how many other moms are in the same situation as me. Where student activity fees paid by them are allowing their kid to see a show that they really want to see themselves.
edit to add: Somehow people seem to have come to the conclusion from my post that I'm living a life of luxury while my poor children are starving and living without necessities. So just to clear it up....Saying I have money to spend on albums and concert tix is not bragging about my income. It simply means I work hard and I choose to treat myself with some relatively inexpensive things like music. Saying that I have broke college age kids doesn't mean they are begging for money on street corners or starving. They have food, clothing, cars, insurance coverage, book costs, tuition etc all paid for. It does not mean they are handed tons of extra cash to blow on concerts or going out.
