16 JAN - DCO WEEKLY OPEN THREAD - Secret Pre-Opening Social Hour
UPDATE: Thank you all for stopping by on Friday! The bar is now closed, but we will reopen in a new 24-hr thread on the David Cook main discussion forum next Friday, January 23 starting around 12:30 PM ET or so. In the meantime, don't forget the thread naming contest (see below)! We hope to see you all next week!

Hey, everyone! FoolsApril64 here (aka your friendly-neighborhood-fan-volunteer site moderator)! I thought it might be an idea if we (and by “we” I mean all David Cook’s fans here at DCO), started a weekly thread – a way to bring this David Cook lovin’ community together as a whole every week – a kind of "cafe" or virtual gathering place where everyone would drop by, have a drink, get to know each other a bit, and chit-chat about David Cook, or about anything. The purpose of the thread is like a Friday social hour, to just occasionally draw us out of our various corners and threads and blogs and hang outs (or, if you’re a newbie or lurker, this thread will be a perfect place for you to introduce yourself). So the thread will be pinned "up top", but only for about 24 hours, then gently sink back down to the Off Topic (OT) for the rest of the week. (Note: Other OT threads that you guys start should still be put in the usual place.)
Now, of course, if we’re going to do this, we will need a series of hosts/hostesses willing to open the thread every week, start the soundtrack and crack the keg, and generally keep the discussion rolling along. I have asked kaydeecee if she would be willing to be our inaugural hostess for the first couple weeks, just to get things going and let you all get an idea of how the thread will work, and she has agreed! If anyone would be interested in serving as thread host/hostess in future, you may sign up here (with no obligation).
OK, so, if this is something the community would be interested in doing, our first bit of business as a group would be to have a contest to find a name for our gathering place! So, put your thinking caps on and then click on over to the DCO Weekly Open Thread Naming Contest blog to enter! The winner gets a fabulous imaginary prize: the Invisible Jaunty Little Hat! Revel in your secret stature among Cook fandom!
Now, before I explain this thread’s rules and properly introduce our hostess, I’d be remiss (drink!) if I didn’t offer my heartfelt thanks first and foremost to David Roland Cook; second, to all of you for your continued efforts in helping to make this online community one in which I would like to imagine David is proud to call his own; and last, but certainly not least, my special thanks to a couple users in particular (you know who you are) for your support of, contribution to, and willingness to act as my sounding board on, this "little project" – “You're skinny and beautiful! ; - P ” and “You ROCK!” *Cheers!* ~Lisa
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE RULES
• Everyone is welcome!
• Anything is on topic! (unless, of course, prohibited by DCO rules)
• Please consider limiting the size of any photos/images used
• Be nice to one another!(*)
(*) Patrons, please do not pick fights, either by being combative OR overly quick to take offense. If you’re not participating with the spirit of a happy hour, you may be asked to simply move on from this thread establishment for the day by the host/hostess or by a site moderator.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And now, without further ado, and because we’re all thirsty, I would like to introduce your hostess for this week … kaydeecee!

Comments (244)
kaydeecee here. kicking off this week's happy hour. Somebody really needs to help me with some New Year's resolutions, it's halfway to February (or as I like to call it, "a Second Chance at a First Month"). What are the changes, big or subtle, that you are seeking for yourself in 2009?
Secondly, puppy. Sure, Cook's new dog is an insanely adorable Scotty terrier. But we, as fans, fell down on the job, neglecting to start a thousand-post, highly-inflamed thread about his choice of pupstar. It's never too late! What sort of pet *should* he have gotten? Ferret? Turtle (I hear they're sexy)? Alternatively, who should Dublin date? I'm thinking a hot little Bichon Frise!
Finally, a half-way serious c-o-c-k-t-a-i-l hour discussion. Music. It's awesome. When we took an informal poll on a DCO thread about the best albums of 2008, I expected it to end up like some AOL thing where everybody likes the same ten popular records. Instead we ended up with more then ninety different titles. But it was awesomely diverse. A lot of you listen to a lot of different music! What's with that? What makes some folks (see David Cook, list of musical influences) into omniverous music lovers, who like a huge range of sounds, and others happy to hear the same 5 Britney and Katy Perry songs over and over?
And we're off! The stuff you just read is me circulating with drinks, breaking some ice. Feel free to discuss anything else in the world, or just say hi.

Happy SunDave, everyone! Man, it is cold here in CT. Just woke up after being lulled to sleep by our David.......think I fell asleep after Light On last nite......no, I remember Bar-ba-sol....must have been IDIFY....anyway, cannot wait to go back to the no name pub in cyberspace on Friday!. What a fantastic idea this was for amazing FoolsApril! And have you read the posts by KDC? She should get a huge award and write a novel! What a writer she is! Maybe David stopped by while we were sleepin, and if he did, he would have said, "Not bad, guys!"
More nices pics have vanished! Had a classy outhouse, a big music room for dancing, but just found this, don't need outhouse after all, ha ha!

evelyiscookified - I had to look to see where it is night already, Estonia!
Are there many DC fans there? Good to see you at Dublin's place.
Lovely jacuzzi we've got. Looks like it will hold a lot of us. It even looks good when not in use. I'm impressed with its nice wide ledges to hold limes for my tequila shots. Comfy.
Morning!
It is a evening here already... nice to see, that everybody are crawling out from their beds... DCTR helped me to get pass my hangover

I am sorry I missed the get together last night.

I was here but out back. I fell asleep in a drunken stupor in the outdoor jacuzzi.
I woke up this morning looking like a prune.
I drowned my sorrows with a bottle of oozo because I was worried about the Cookie and band going overseas and because I will miss them s-o-o-o-o-o much.
Do you think they will write? lol
I know I shouldn't worry. And they will bring down the house for the soldiers there and shine the Light On them. It is indeed a noble deed.
Just want to say Hi to everyone. Introduce myself. I am sorry I don't look my best with a 100 proof hangover. But glad to meet you all and hope to be in fine shape next Friday.
Oh yeah my name is Vicki aka ladynsearch aka ldynsrch
I hang out alot at the scrapbook topic with photos, paper, glue and scissors so I am usually a mess.
You are welcome to post your tour stories and pics, David and band pics, drawings of David, David inspired poems of undying love for the man, etc.
http://www.davidcookofficial.com/content/the-new-home-david-cook-scrapbo...
Oh yeah one more thing, you are welcome to visit myspace (link below by sig) and watch lots of David videos and some nice pics. I have a pink jukebox there and on my profile page here http://www.davidcookofficial.com/user/ldynsrch
with lots of David song selections (from Axium, Analog Heart, DCTR, and other) on it. Leave the tab open and flip open another tab so you can listen to DC music while you post.
You can pick and choose.
Just bring popcorn will you.

Thanks for the breakfast, Patti! yummo! (erp!)
I had a gorgeous pic of a great big wood log cabin type place here, but it is gone!
Huge windows, gorgeous wood floors, a zillion rooms, but it is gone!

Axium is a little OTT for my hangover this morning after my night at Dublin's. I'm mellowing with a little Avalanche. I'll help flip pancakes. (((hugs))) to anyone still here.
Morning Flippinfordc! Yea! You missed a great partay! I'm somewhat hung-over this morning. I'm still a little bit hi from all of the DC love that was everywhere here last night! I will have a Bloody Mary if you don't mind mixing me one. Thanks Here, I made some eggs and BACON (!!) Enjoy!... btw: I'm listening to Axium "Story Thus Far" this morning...what about you?

Wow, I come home late from work and what do I find -- who is that passed out by the toitlet? How do we get drunk in the virtual bar. I'm gonna sweep up some, have a few drinks, then hit the sak. Thanks again to Lisa and KDC for the awsome new Friday home! This was a great time. Already looking forward to next FriDave. Any late lurkers there that one to tip one back, just let me know!
Thanks again, see you all next week!

Self revelation hits me like a brick, its 4 am. Sleeps out of the question with the shape i'm in

G' Night all! Am I closing down the bar? LOL! Thanks for a great time!
Hi right back at 'cha Cricketbetsy! Nice to "see" you again! *waves furiously*
And thanks Kaydeecee! I'm going to do my best to keep the picture thing going - so far, so good. Now, I just have to figure out how to post the darn things on-line!
I can't seem to stay away from this thread... Thanks to all for the fun!
I'm just joining the party, and you have 6 pages already! What a wonderful idea FoolsApril (and kdc)! I will not feel the need to read all of your prior posts before jumping in. I already have a drink, but sure, I'll have another. I have been working terribly hard today and deserve it!
New Year's Resolution - I did not formally identify one! However, one of my priorities this year is to balance my life so that I can focus more on family and myself rather than just work (and you thougt I was gonna say so I could focus more on David) . I just went to a 30 hour week (yeah, right) starting Jan1 so we will see how this goes. Maybe my concern should have been to balance family and DC, because to tell you the truth - this hobby is very time-consuming!
Puppy - all I can say is I'll bet David had noooooo idea how much work this was gonna be! Cat's are easier, but then they probably don't travel as well. Well, maybe they could, but I have never had such a cat.
What was the other subject (where's that drink?)? Ahh music! I have to admit I was in a siloh for quite a few years not venturing out too much beyond some faves (John Mayer, Dave Matthews, Matchbox 20). My interest (notice I did not say obsession) in David Cook led me to DCO, and an amazing group of people and the combination of suggestions from both David and fans has definitely opened my eyes and ears to some great new music! I am still playing catch-up, but I am much more interested in finding new artists, thanks to all of you (you too David)!
Yo!! iloveDCEYES!! Lets go shoot some Pool! Rack em up and I'll do get us some Jagerbombs and Tequila Shots! Wanna make a wager?

Hi Cyn! *waves*, I think you may have come and gone already!
Hi Lisa, kdc and everybody! *waving at you from Orlando* I'm thinking of you all, but waaay behind on my DCO reading. It's going to take weeks to catch up!
We attended a soft opening of the American Idol attraction at Disney World. DC recorded a video where he gives the first contestant some advice. He's larger than life on the screen and looked fantastic! It made my day.
Not really a resolution, but my goal is to get to more DC-EEB concerts this year. My feelings are mixed on the 1,000 seat venues. If we can get tickets, the more intimate settings will be fabulous! But I'll angst over getting tickets, for sure.
Raising a glass to ya' all. Cheers!
~Sharon
iloveDCYES,
I have that same Thistlebury braided rug in my great room!!! This feels so homey!
I'll have a top shelf cranberry frozen margartia salted for starters. For my second chance resolution I am going to try to be a healthier person and take better care of me this year. I have a tendency to take care of everyone else most of the time. That means I need to spend just a little more time on DCO and listening to all (Axium, MWK, Analog Heart, DCTR) of David's music. I can do that and exercise so I knock out 2 things at a time. Dublin is such a little cutey! I am glad David got a dog to be with him. I have my 2 girls -- Ruffles, an 8 yr. old Shar-Pei & Sophie a 1 yr. old Mastiff-- so I think a dog is the perfect pet. Yes, she weighs 130, but my Sophie girl would be the perfect companion/bud for Dublin. She doesn't know she isn't a lap dog, she is still a puppy in every way and he would never learn to hump her (male dogs do those things ya know). So, come on over Dublin, Sophie can take you to her favorite spot in the back yard where you can run and sniff an do doggie stuff.
It sure is fun to talk with everyone. I have met such cool cookified people in this place. But, I don't have time for another Margarita and I am driving. So see you all soon.
I love this, I never have time to do happy hour anymore!
My pictures keep vanishing! Anyway, how about a pinball machine, pool tables, etc, requested by Pweller....
karen
Hey, mods - I tried to PM you but your profiles are blank. I just checked the list of suggested names for this thread at DCO Weekly Open Thread Naming Contest -- and mine (#16) was listed as entered by someone else -
Fri, 01/16/2009 - 17:44 — all.in.due.time
…Name - Dublin's Scottish Pub?
Fri, 01/16/2009 - 18:18 — all.in.due.time
Thanks, Klaireabelle and Tina - glad you liked my thread name suggestion. To make it more explanatory, it could be expanded to -
Dublin's Scottish Pub - Tarry here on FriDaves
Sorry to be picky...maybe it's the margaritas.

For every moment of joy, every hour of fear, for every winding road that brought me here...this is my thanksgiving.
Okay, hubby is quite fond of the Doctor, if he had to choose a band member! That's because he (hubby) plays the ge-tar and he sings. His biggest influences are Gillian Welsh-anyone? Chris Theily(sp?) and Nickle Creek. One thing I was thrilled about is the fact that Andy Skib listed Nickle Creek as one of his influences!
Oh and how did I forget to list James Taylor and well, some of Billy Joel? Eagles, Chicago...some Bruce. What's wrong with me?
ETA: The second list is music that I forgot to list for myself...
On behalf of Alucardlee and myself...thanks for showing us the love! We love you all too!
--

All right! That is so kewl! alucardlee and cookie_fan34 you are one tight couple! I wanna buy yos guys a drink!
I guess I have not "shared" my NYR yet. That's cause I didn't make one! My NYR this year was NOT to make one because I never keep them anyway!
Say!!!!!! I'm looking for the Doctor and I can not find him? Did you guys sneak him out back cause you heard I was coming? Not fair! I'll play with Dub then and then maybes shoot some pool and play some darts!

Just to let everyone know, I am Alucardlee's wife!
You lucky dog - and he brought you to Dublin's tonight and is probably plying you with tequila shots. I'm green... Hmmm good color for an Irish named Scottie's bar...
* raises hand excitedly* I have a Bichon! Ok he is a male but his name is Finnegan so I'm sure he and Dublin can go prowling the pubs together looking for girls. Meanwhile, his little brother Riley (the Maltese) trails behind trying to keep up with the big guys. (and yep, they are shelter dogs.)

we like hi this much after track 12 we wait 10 min till kiss on the neck plays.
First, before I drink too much and start drunk posting, just wanna give a love shout out to everyone here - had some RL stress last night and today ( had to take my 91 yr old Mom to the hospital), and in the back of my mind, I knew that I could come here to de-stress between visits while she recuperates. I love the humor, the commraderie, the understanding and the totally OTT takes on everything.
The funny thing about me and music - since I've been a singer and guitarist my whole life, is that musical influences are part of who I am. One of my daughters told me today that one of the things she finds so funny about me is that I mark time in my life by albums - I tell the stories of my life in the context of whose music I was listening to then... so my list is very long.
My obsession with David has almost stopped all others cold. Very strange.
Most recent - Paul McCartney/ the Fireman : Electric Arguments.
Because of David - Eric Griffin and BTE
LIfelong - Dylan, Joni, James Taylor, Leonard Cohen, The Stones, The Who, Jimmy, Tim Hardin, The Byrds, Cream, Neil Young, CSNY , Beatles ( #1 of course) etc etc
Last 10 years - Dar Williams, Bonnie Raitt...many many others.
So, I love Irish pubs, so "Dublin's Place" or some such would be great - sawdust on the floor, dark wood booths, great Shepheard's pie, Irish coffee...ahhhhhh.
--

realy who in there right mind dosent like david cook come on hes great,
To those that are leaving...Goodnight! I am glad that you are getting a kick out of my husband being on here...it's funny!
--

Cookie_fan34 -I am laughing hysterically at my laptop, don't know whether to blush or what. But my hubby just called me downstairs to dinner so I'd better say G'nite fer now.
Yes, but cookie_fan34, even though my husband's gone to two concerts with me, he would never post on here and have his own name! LOL! Love it! I do have to say, the other day he said over his shoulder, I think David Cook's growing on me!
Hi iloveDCYES! Hi ChristineOH! *waves*, I think I recognize both of you!
Just to let everyone know, I am Alucardlee's wife!

whos ready for the tour to start .cant wait to see him with my wife."
WOW. Really? A husband posting on DCO? That is very cool! I mean I have a really cool husband but he would not be posting here and looking forward to the tewer. In fact he is, jokingly, I think, threatening to put Net Nanny on my laptop to stop it from accessing anything with "David Cook"!!
So welcome to... Dublin's? Bring some friends and your wife next time!!
....strolls on in with spiked hot choc in hand.......
Hey everyone! This thread is a great idea! What a cozy place full of my favorite people in the world - fellow Cook lovers!
My new year's resolution is to see David and band again and to "Cook" my sister-in-law and have her go to see the crew with me. I think that she'll love them as much as I do.
I am a rocker at heart, but have broadened my horizons because of David. This stuff they call "emo?" I guess I'm a big fan of that too.
I have a female pug who would love to have a play date with Dublin - and I'd like to spend some time chatting with Dublin's proud daddy.
Cheers everyone!!!
Gotta go...bbl.
~gg
KCD, I loaded up the ice buckets in case any of the patrons get outta line!
--

I am not sure how all this works here...but I think its cool......
Love the dog...........he needs someone to be with him! he is kind of a macho puppy...haha..kind of like the Daver...
Musical influences..........well, I guess you could say that David reminds me a bit...just a bit of Dan Fogelberg.....he wrote beautiful acoustic music that always told a story...and that reminds me of David...David's voice is more soulful than Fogelberg...There is just something about the tone of his voice that just gets me...its crazy.
recent music.........well, I havent listened to it..but my daughter and some of her friends made a funny music video of Katy Perry's Hot and Cold..I will see if I can figure out how to post it....it cracks me up...ok I found the link...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQvW_GdThQ0
the tour........I cant wait..I have seen them several times now and geeeeezzz...I want an entire concert! and if they play multiple places in California...I am so at each location! I hope we get some news soon...I have done my part by requesting them at all the colleges here in San Diego!

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
Karen,
Your imagined space is so clean and cozy! I kind of want to go there on retreat.
Because of my misspent youth, I end up visualizing someplace all sawdusty and smelling of beer!
kcarlson:
I am probably one of the very few here that doesn't have a mp3 player but I hope to get one for my birthday in June so I can use it for my walking regime
I would actually say that's one of the best reasons to get an ipod or other mp3 player: it's wonderful to be able to create the atmosphere you want to walk or workout, with your favorite music.
PicChick: we'll have to hope the band come somewhere in New England! Close enough to Maine to drive.
canadianlady : Cook doesn't know how to make a Cosmo but I do! Oh my lord, do I want to know how chilly you all are up there if we are at 12 degrees? Makes you 2 cosmos.
Christine-OH : I love your resolution to take more photos and share them. That's how I got into photography a few years back--by getting over the whole fact that I didn't know *how* to take them and just making it a practice to do it. Oh, and I let photo geeks who really know their stuff lecture me and tell me stuff
so I can learn a bit as I go.
Flippinfordc ; Oh my, what job is taking you outdoors in this weather? Stay safe! As for your shout outs: love German Shepherds, used to have a noble one. And we need as many 43 yr old rock chicks as are willing to come bang heads!
Yamina, yamina--pokes you like a six grader and gets excited! Not looking!
bluespringsrockr --puts on pretend Powerpuff Girl mad face: your girl Taylor Swift just snatched back the chart tiara from Cooook! Oh well, he will have to fend for himself, I guess. That Taylor S is one tough charting bessy.
pweller7 I love the idea that you're home in your fuzzy slippers but want to run down to the bar and see . . . The Doctor.
You just know someone is going to write an awesome movie/TV scene to the tune of Kiss on Your Neck . . . meeting nasty in a bar!!
DCrocks88
awww i can't have a drink because i'm underage.
Wow, you are a very honest virtual bar goer. Le Sigh: the '88 in all my friends sigs is because it is our college graduation year.
Rest: If I didn't get to give you an individual shout out, thanks so much for coming out an playing tonight! You are all awesome. It looks like we'll be posting another of these next week!

whos ready for the tour to start .cant wait to see him with my wife.
kcarlson, hey reading your post caught me up on a lot of info! Thanks. I've been here for a little while off and on. I've been eavesdropping on some conversations *sorry folks*, but I'm not a quick reader so didn't want to catch up on 5 pages. (BTW, I immediately went to the bar and got a glass of wine and am sipping on it.)
coolshades, Wow, the bar exam! Good for you!
NYR, I seem to make the same health related NYR each yr. I've come to the conclusion that the most important thing is to always continue moving forward in life. The reason I mentioned coolshades passing the bar exam, is because I was going to *brag* on getting certified as a tutor for dyslexics this past year. I'm still very pleased with this because it's what I'm supposed to be doing. KDC, I really like your cerebral NYR, I think finding your own Daily Anthem is awesome! I didn't read in detail, but the walking part sounds healthy too!
I have to get up from time to time because my kids are playing hide n seek and my dog continues to seem to want to go out. My beloved Scruff bucket, Scrufster, Scruffet buffet (real name Scruffy) is a mix of miniature pincher and s***zu, and darn it if he didn't poop inside this morning! Grrrrr. He's trained, but it is simply freezing outside so I've had to watch him more. BTW, Dublin is adorable! I love puppies/dogs so think this is a great choice! But, I'm just wondering, turtles-sexy?
Was this both turtles and ferrets, or just turtles?
Music? I have never followed one band before. Over the years I've loved what I call classic rock and folk rock. Beatles, the Stones, America, Dylan...(All a little before my time), then Journey and some Foreigner. Later I was fond of some of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As a result of David Cook I've been learning more about current music. I really like Jack Johnson! I love "Cocoon".
One of my NYR is to have a "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" party with other moms! My husband is so much in support of this! He came in the other day from the car and said, "You would have loved it! I just heard LO on the radio and then it went right into 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun!" I've been talking about doing this for awhile.
This is a great idea for a thread BTW!
Patti, that is a small room, I know. I was looking for a pic of a big room. Here ya go, I found some more pics.I can't find what I really want, but this is better. Just lots of wood! Smells good!
karen
do we serve water in this barrrrrr??????
--

Hey, thought I would pop in. Just got back from running errands. Brrrrrrr, it's cold! I see I've missed quite a few drinks. I need something hot to warm me up... hmmm (what I really want I can't have... *pictures a really hot rawkstar we all know) How 'bout a baileys and coffee. I need to start off slow- I'm a lightweight as my DH tells me. If the Bailey's doesn't put me to sleep, I'll have a slow gin fizz, heavy on the gin as my second!
