Welcome to the number nerd thread, official home for all-things charts related. While this thread is, by design, quite focused in terms of topic, it is rarely "just the facts ma'am." Here you will find all nature of Renaissance nerds (™CathyM-K), being effusive and emotional, pragmatic and poetic, inquisitive and inspired by David Cook and the numbers that serve as benchmarks throughout his career.

We are descended from the original and epic David Cook: You Had Me at Hello thread at TWoP, and are therefore sister-thread to the DWoP thread here at DCO. We are set in our TWoPPy ways and thus prefer a certain posting etiquette to make this thread as readable as possible: Please use proper sentence case (no all-caps or no-caps) and proper punctuation. Also, we prefer an image-free thread so please disable graphical sigs when posting, and use links instead of embedded photos. Snark is always accepted in conjunction with numerical analysis.

Chart-watching is a jargon-filled hobby, and we use a lot of different industry terms, acronyms, and nicknames that can take a little time to get comfortable with. If you're confused about anything you read here, check-out the handy CJT Glossary, maintained by FolkFan. Still not sure what the heck we're talking about? Just post a question to the thread, or send a PM to LadyM for clarification.

Here's what you can expect here:

  • Mediabase updates on any tracks currently seeing radio airplay will be posted daily, with published chart positions released on Mondays.
  • Album sales estimates from Hits Daily Double are posted Fridays, Mondays and Tuesdays as they come in.
  • Official Soundscan sales reports for singles and albums are generally leaked on Wednesdays.
  • Billboard Charts are published on Thursday and generally leak late Wednesday.

Any other day? Come join the party for insights and analysis on industry trends, promotional strategies, comparing/contrasting David's success to other artists and past Idols, etc. So break out your spreadsheets and your dog-eared copies of 'Billboard's Guide to Hot-100 Hits,' 'cause it's gonna get analytical up in here.

Attn: Web Nerds - the spam filter is again an issue. Please, help!

I agree that country music is evolving and changing. My 29 year old son grew up with rock music blaring from his room and car. And now...loves country music and rarely listens to anything else. Of course country is now a completely different sound and vibe than it used to be, but I was so surprised to find this out. He also thinks that Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood are pretty hot....

eta: Add me to the list that would love for DC to be introduced to the country music world. And more Cookwood.

FolkFan, Magic Rainbow mentioned that you had called. And y'all he really does have a flame thrower. Heh.

Yes, I see considerable upsides and market value for CrossRoads and David in country. I am in no way suggesting that David "go country". But as the ‘sound’ of country evolves, more rock bands can and have moved in without being labeled country. Kid Rock gets his music and videos played on country. His duet with Sheryl Crow, "The Picture", was a huge country hit. Rock and Roll Jesus, which dropped October 2007, has sold over 2.5 million albums (he doesn't sell through iTunes). Bon Jovi released "Home" with Jennifer Nettles and that became a huge sales/chart hit.

And look what 3 rock bands/artists will be performing at this year’s 43rd Annual CMA’s: Dave Matthews, Kid Rock, and Daughtry.

Kenny Chesney w/Dave Matthews “I’m Alive”
Daughtry with Vince Gill – “Tennessee Line” (also on Daughtry's album)
Kid Rock will also duet with Jamey Johnson (TBD)

So these country/rock pairings seem to be happening with more frequency and acceptance. I would be thrilled for David to "cross" into country via CrossRoads or a duet like the aforementioned. In fact, that has been a PONY of mine ever since I heard his Nightline Playlist segment and his early (childhood) country roots. Country fans buy albums. Country fans go to festivals and concerts. I'd have no issue with David playing at any of those types of festivals. I'm all for expanding the fanbase and finding additional channels for DC distribution, if you will. And I would be delighted with a CookWood duet of Avalanche -- that would be gorgeous.

I think that many a devotee of the concept of a CookWood Crossroads hangs out here. [Sasha, are you lurking out there somewhere?] Sure, I could see a DC crossover song, and really, there are more and more rock and mainstream artists who are doing songs geared toward country, with a country artist, or otherwise acknowledging country music.

More re: the AI issue noted below: From Pulse "CHART ALERT: Mediabase is in the process of updating the revised panels, audience, and weights for charts. Trending will be temporarily affected until this process is completed late Friday

Based on some of the reported major shifts in AI, there is a belief that what is going on is that Mediabase is adjusting the weights so that they are no longer underreporting the audience impression for (1) country and (2) HAC. Other than the fact that the reported numbers on Pulse definitely supports the concept that country is getting such an adjustment, I don't really have too much to say on that country front. But if there is an adjustment being made on HAC, that would definitely be consistent with what we've been seeing about the Arbitron PPM ratings indicating that audience for HAC had been being underreported.

Magic Rainbow thread.

I was looking back at the prior discussion here about Carrie Underwood and her itunes picks including Avalanche...which is fantastic that she chose a DC song for her list. Months before I posted that IMO it would be genius for David and Carrie to perform Avalanche as a duet. Not that it will happen...but wondering what anyone else thinks about that. I also agree to the comments made here about Lie and Avalanche having a country sound to them. I am anxiously awaiting Carrie's variety show. David has already met Dolly from AI and now he will have the opportunity to meet some other great country artists, including Brad Paisley. Rock and Country can blend together quite nicely...so I am excited to see this.

Good afternoon, y'all. I'll do more of a mediabase update tomorrow, but thought that I'd mention that Windy and Zenny had big jumps in AI, and that the jumps in AI are also reflected in previous week's numbers on the quickcut. It may be that mediabase finally fixed the problem where its weekly numbers were not reflecting AI connected to Satellite radio plays (on XM or Sirius). If so, we're now getting a more accurate reflection of the songs' weekly AI.

@magicrainbow: After an extended period of attacks on my part, Mediabase finally relented. Thank yous are not necessary. Presents, however, are.

@dctd: Collecting presents for Rainbow friend. Running around in circles. Running around in circles. Running around in circles.

@magicrainbow: Thank you for the help, Dublin. Have a steak.

DCTR is at #536 this morning on iTunes. Windy is #476.

I heard my first ad for DC at Casino Rama north of Toronto today! It was so weird. I listen to CBC Radio or DCTR most of the time in the car but CBC had a documentary I wasn't interested in so I switched to the all news station and immediately heard:
"David Cook bringing rock back to Casino Rama on November 16. Then a snippet of Zenny and back to David Cook, winner of season 7 of AI blah, blah."
I haven't listened to that station in months but my DC radar was keen today.

Here is the BB chart year rankings for 2009. There are only 2 weeks left for this chart year so it looks like David will stay at # 12. Pretty good I would say. The number of albums sold is an old number that has not been updated since David fell out of the top 200 billboard:

Week 50

Billboard 200
Rank - Wks - Sales 000 - TITLE - Artist
001 - 50 - 3,548 - FEARLESS - Taylor Swift
002 - 50 - 2,468 - I AM…SASHA FIERCE - Beyonce
003 - 50 - 2,371 - DARK HORSE - Nickelback
004 - 50 - 2,012 - TWILIGHT - Soundtrack
005 - 32 - 1,615 - HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE - Soundtrack
006 - 42 - 1,607 - CIRCUS - Britney Spears
007 - 39 - 1,590 - 808S AND HEARTBREAK - Kanye West
008 - 50 - 1,535 - THE FAME - Lady GaGa
009 - 24 - 1,496 - RELAPSE - Eminem
010 - 21 - 1,300 - THE E.N.D. (THE ENERGY NEVER DIES) - Black Eyed Peas
011 - 50 - 1,297 - ONLY BY THE NIGHT - Kings Of Leon
012 - 44 - 1,236 - DAVID COOK - David Cook

For BB comprehensive albums for the year he is # 13 because there is a MJ album in there:

Billboard Comprehensive 200
Rank - Wks - Sales 000 - TITLE - Artist
001 - 50 - 3,548 - FEARLESS - Taylor Swift
002 - 50 - 2,468 - I AM…SASHA FIERCE - Beyonce
003 - 50 - 2,371 - DARK HORSE - Nickelback
004 - 47 - 2,060 - NUMBER ONES - Michael Jackson
005 - 50 - 2,012 - TWILIGHT - Soundtrack
006 - 32 - 1,615 - HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE - Soundtrack
007 - 38 - 1,596 - CIRCUS - Britney Spears
008 - 37 - 1,585 - 808S AND HEARTBREAK - Kanye West
009 - 50 - 1,535 - THE FAME - Lady GaGa
010 - 24 - 1,496 - RELAPSE - Eminem
011 - 21 - 1,300 - THE E.N.D. (THE ENERGY NEVER DIES) - Black Eyed Peas
012 - 50 - 1,297 - ONLY BY THE NIGHT - Kings Of Leon
013 - 42 - 1,231 - DAVID COOK - David Cook

Remember the number shown is from when David was last in the Comprehensive chart.

ETA: There is a good chance that David will fall to # 13 on The BB 200 and # 14 on the Comprehensive chart because Jay Z is right behind him and selling well. So he could move down a spot.

It's nice to see a jump like that for the album, though at this sales level it may not be a huge change in actual sales. I wonder if the resumption of touring might be another cause?

I haven't posted here in forever, but I wanted to let everyone know about a kind of unusual bit of exposure for DC.

A good friend of mine went to a performance of the Contemporary Ballet of Dallas recently and couldn't wait to tell me that the first piece they performed was a dance to Come Back to Me!

Some of the other music they performed to that night was Higher Ground by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, several songs by Dave Matthews, and several songs by Collective Soul.

DC himself will be in Dallas performing on Sunday night. Can't wait!

Thank you, Carrie Underwood - I'm sure that DCTR's continued upward movement at iTunes this morning is largely due to your positive influence. Here are all the updated sales rankings:

DCTR starts the morning at #454 on iTunes. Windy is #463.

Well, time will tell about the upcoming TV appearances, but I for one never thought he did Lie just because Carrie happens to like it. It was obviously at least approved and more likely strategically planned by management/label. We'll see soon enough if it was just a one-off thing ("let's feature this pretty song that Dave likes performing and has never really done on a national stage") or if there's a bigger plan for Lie.

I just thought that, regardless of whether or not it was truly Carrie's favorite DC song (luv that she calls him DC), Lie was the most country sounding song of his entire record and given Carrie's genre, the song is a good way to introduce him to country fans who may also enjoy rock. I think their friend and country singer Nick Gibson also commented before how Lie was the best country song he'd heard written for the rock genre (or something like that). I understand that others have said that Avalanche is also a bit country-ish, but Lie is even more so IMO.

I find it interesting that in the Idol Airplay Chart 5 of the 7 artists in the top 15 on the chart are Idol winners. Daughtry and Kellie Pickler are the only non winners on the top of the chart this week...and seemingly for most of the past year that I've been watching the list. Although Archie was up high on it for a while. 5 of the 7 artists in the top 15 have at least 2 songs in the top. Daughtry has 4 songs in the top 15 and David is next with 3 songs. Pretty good considering how long ago those singles were released.

Still no Avalanche sightings, but LO has reappeared at #990.

Makes me wonder if Avalanche is actually Carrie's favorite but that "they" wanted David to do Lie on her show, as that is the song they will be having him sing on all his upcoming TV appearances?

Well, time will tell about the upcoming TV appearances, but I for one never thought he did Lie just because Carrie happens to like it. It was obviously at least approved and more likely strategically planned by management/label. We'll see soon enough if it was just a one-off thing ("let's feature this pretty song that Dave likes performing and has never really done on a national stage") or if there's a bigger plan for Lie.

As or what Carrie's actual favorite is, who knows. My answer changes depending on the hour you ask me, so it's not out of the realm that hers does too, fangirl that she is. [wink]

Carrie's pimpage is cool for us fans but I don't think it's high enough profile in the store to drive sales without some other type of outside promotion. While I'm hoping for Lie on R&K, if he chose to do Avalanche I wouldn't be mad at him. But I'm not counting on it.

ETA: any of you gurus planning on tracking sales of Avalanche since Carrie graciously provides the download capability?

I checked this morning Yammie and there's no sign of it in the Top 1000 overall at iTunes (nor is it even in the Top 1000 in Pop). We'll watch for it, but I'm not expecting it to really do anything. Yamina, I looked for it but no sign in the top 1,000 yet. I think it's too early. Rest assured I will look for it in my once or twice-a-day forays to iTunes.

This morning on iTunes, DCTR is at #537 and Windy is #428.

Nice to know Carrie has the same problem we all do - what's today's favorite DCTR song? Is it wrong for me to hope David sings Avalanche acoustic on R&K?

Yea...for Idol Airplay chart with David having 3 songs in top 15. Yea...for Carrie Underwood...love her...and her friendship with David--nothing short of a win-win-- and one more...yea...for Carrie's pimping of Lie and Avalanche! Thanks LM for the info....

****Off to itunes to look at Carrie's favorites****

David Cook --A True Artist--His Voice is His Paintbrush- Painting Musical Images that Reflect his Inner Soul

Not only is she promoting Avalanche, LM (I kinda thought she'd dig that song), but there's also a section on that iTunes page called "Carrie's Favorite Albums" and she's included DCTR! It's not on the lead page, but if you click on the right arrow button, it is the next display of albums. He's in good company, along with an eclectic mix of her favorites, including BEP, Jimmy Eat World, Kenny Chesney, Josh Groban, Foo Fighters, Miranda Lambert, among others.

Awwww, I can't get over what an awesome buddy she's turned out to be for our guy!

So iTunes is now running a massive ad for "Carrie Underwood Week," including her new album, singles, and an artist playlist where she picks 16 of her favorite songs (including tracks from artists as varied as Dolly Parton, New Kids on the Block, Black Eyed Peas, etc.). She picks Avalanche as her #10 track, and in the commentary says "This is my favorite D.C. song!" But just last week during the taping of her Holiday special she said Lie was her favorite. All I can say is yay Carrie for not being able to make up her mind and pimping two different DC songs!

Again we owe rb22, the dedicated Cook fan from Israel, a big thank-you for staying up late to give me the count for YdniW. {{{{rb22}}}}

There's not a lot to report this week regarding You-tube viewing. Ydniw continues to decline in views due to the copyright issues in the US. The reason for this has still not been relayed to this poster.

BJ (live), IDWTMT, and Pork Beans have shown gains, with Pork Beans having the "leap of the week", jumping up two positions from last week. Permanent (studio) and Declaration (Studio-Lyrics) moved up one spot each.
 .
The strength of the Audition video is impressive. It has received (again) the most number of views of any video that we are tracking.

  • Audition: 3,266,590 ( + 25,011, - 3 %) or once every 24.83 sec.
  • Light On (Official Video): 5,100,960 ( + 22,660, - 1 %) or once every 26.69 sec.
  • Come Back To Me (Official Video): 1,762,612 ( + 17,681, - 6 %) or once every 34.21 sec.
  • Billie Jean (Studio): 1,436,693 ( + 17,258, - NC %) or once every 35.05 sec.
  • Billie Jean (Live): 400,031 ( + 15,817, + 10 %) or once every 38.24 sec.
  • Permanent (Studio with lyrics): 388,415 ( + 9,164 - 15 %)
  • CookWood: 749,593 ( + 8958, - 15 %)
  • I Don't Want To Miss A Thing (Studio): 553,398 ( + 4,653, + 14 %)
  • Lie (Studio w/Lyrics): 104,687 ( + 2,338, - 1 %)
  • Pork Beans 49,436 ( + 1,975, + 29%)
  • Permanent (HOB Orlando): 165,630 ( + 1,396, - 25 %)
  • Declaration (Studio-Lyrics) 73,398 ( + 1,394, - 7 %)

42 ≡ 6 (mod 6) "Wavelength"... Drop to your knees and remember where you came from this is the time to abandon hesitation.

Hey, y'all. Found some interesting numbers courtesy of Pulse today, and thought that I'd share them. Specifically... year-to-date rankings by radio format. Here goes:

CHR
As a fortuitous matter, this is the one format where I was able to find rankings for songs all the way through #500. There is some question as to whether this source uses a different formula or timeframe as All Access (the source that I'm using for the other formats), as the top 50 for All Access in this format does not match this source's. That said, both are based on Mediabase, and I suspect that the rankings are fairly reliable. And, for DC, those rankings are:

#74: LO, with 45,960 spins
#189: CBTM, with 11,105 spins
#218: Magic Rainbow, with 8,816 spins

A few things there: First, while this should cover pretty much all of Windy's spins, it would definitely not cover the Rainbow's strongest periods, and likely does not cover Zenny's first 7 weeks or so charting on Top 40. Second, look at that #74 ranking for Zenny. I actually did have a sense that (while not exactly a blockbuster on CHR) Zenny had done better on CHR than is commonly believed, but being #74 for the year, likely not including some of his stronger weeks (although including his peak weeks in January and February), is nice to see.

HAC

I got these rankings from All Access, so I can tell you that they cover January 2009 through the end of October 2009, from the published Mediabase panel. On the negative side, it only lists through #50, so I can't tell you where the Rainbow might rank. [Ducks.] Not that I don't want to do so, of course. Because I do. Want to do so. Anyway:

#17: LO, with 67,425 spins
#19: CBTM, with 62,317 spins

This is both a sign of how much these songs got spun at their peaks, but also of how much recurrent airplay can really add to a song's overall spins. Even without that period of airplay from 9/23 through 12/31, Zenny still put together a nice stack of 67,425 spins. Some of that is because of Zenny's peak airplay spins in January and February, but a lot of it is because Zenny throws down 600 to 800 spins every week.

AC
The source for this one was also All Access, with the same parameters. And the song rankings that I have are:

#7: Magic Rainbow, with 48,592 spins
#44: LO, with 15,803 spins

Now, this is one where you're getting just about all of Zenny's spins, because he barely got moving at all on AC before the Xmas freeze broke his momentum. But look at our favorite ninja. Having already secured top ten status on AC in 2008, and leaving all of his 2008 spins behind him, the Rainbow is again looking really good for another top ten ranking for 2009.

Obviously, there are two months left in the year, and rankings can change. I think that the basic placements will remain more or less the same---I don't see the Rainbow dropping out of the top ten in AC, Zenny looks safe and Windy looks almost-as-safe to stay in the top twenty on HAC, etc. But we'll see how it all pans out.

Magic Rainbow thread.

I really love that airplay chart because it shows how much airplay successful recurrent singles get.

David's total airplay for the week is: 5223

Edit: LM beat me to it.
