Billboard and Bullets and Soundscan Oh My! Cooking up the Charts
"ahhhh, math. it never lies."
-- David Roland Cook
Welcome to the number nerd thread, official home for all-things charts related. While this thread is, by design, quite focused in terms of topic, it is rarely "just the facts ma'am." Here you will find all nature of Renaissance nerds (CathyM-K), being effusive and emotional, pragmatic and poetic, inquisitive and inspired by David Cook and the numbers that serve as benchmarks throughout his career.
We are descended from the original and epic David Cook: You Had Me at Hello thread at TWoP, and are therefore sister-thread to the DWoP thread here at DCO. We are set in our TWoPPy ways and thus prefer a certain posting etiquette to make this thread as readable as possible: Please use proper sentence case (no all-caps or no-caps) and proper punctuation. Also, we prefer an image-free thread so please disable graphical sigs when posting, and use links instead of embedded photos. Snark is always accepted in conjunction with numerical analysis.
Chart-watching is a jargon-filled hobby, and we use a lot of different industry terms, acronyms, and nicknames that can take a little time to get comfortable with. If you're confused about anything you read here, check-out the handy CJT Glossary, maintained by FolkFan. Still not sure what the heck we're talking about? Just post a question to the thread, or send a PM to LadyM for clarification.
Here's what you can expect here:
- Mediabase updates on any tracks currently seeing radio airplay will be posted daily, with published chart positions released on Mondays.
- Album sales estimates from Hits Daily Double are posted Fridays, Mondays and Tuesdays as they come in.
- Official Soundscan sales reports for singles and albums are generally leaked on Wednesdays.
- Billboard Charts are published on Thursday and generally leak late Wednesday.
Any other day? Come join the party for insights and analysis on industry trends, promotional strategies, comparing/contrasting David's success to other artists and past Idols, etc. So break out your spreadsheets and your dog-eared copies of 'Billboard's Guide to Hot-100 Hits,' 'cause it's gonna get analytical up in here.

DCTR is still at #756 this morning on a supposedly current feed on iTunes, which looks suspicious for not having changed at all. Windy is at #557.
Dropping off this tidbit. Bar Ba Sol got a spin tonight on KBFM Edinburg TX, top 40 station. We saw it on the yes.com channel and we all squeed a little. This station plays mostly hip-hop, by the way.
I have two reactions, actually:
1. Squees along with everyone else.
2. Hip-hop? WTF? Did BBS wander into the wrong bar again?
I'll squee a little with you on that Barbasol spin! FYI - Edinburg is in far south Texas, near McAllen and the Mexican border.
Numbers? 5006 people online right now.

Does anyone think that David will release an EP before the next album?
Thank you FolkFan and Antul! Looking just at the instances where David actually performed, I see Declaration as a close second to LO. I had thought he played both LO and Declaration NYE 2008. But neither of you have that listed.
LO and Declaration were performed for: SNL, GMA (only partial of DECL aired), Kimmel, AMA (only snippet of DECL aired). Plus LO was played on R&K on one occasion and a partial of it aired on a different occasion when CBTM was played.
LO and not Declaration was performed for: Leno, Ellen, NYE
Declaration and not LO was performed for: Home Run Derby
So if Declaration is indeed played on R&K this Monday, then it will have had only 1 fewer TV performance than LO. I am counting 5 performances for CBTM (AI, Ellen, R&K, Jimmy Fallon, GMA).

Given the importance of new releases and the popularity of Holiday music this time of year, it probably shouldn't be too surprising that DCTR has taken a big hit at iTunes and Best Buy. Does anyone here know if Declaration is the song David has played the most, or second most, for TV appearances?
Early on, whenever he could play 2 songs, he would play both Light On and Declaration. Then this summer, before the Baseball game, he played Declaration and Heroes. Now he is reportedly performing Declaration on Regis and Kelly on Monday.
I have missed a lot of the TV appearances, so I am really not sure. I know there were a number of other appearances where he just played Light On, but I expect there were also other appearances where he played Declaration and other songs without playing Light On. I am thinking he has performed Declaration on TV more often than Come Back to Me, but I could be wrong about that too.

I really like that quote, Sky. It certainly isn't easy to have hits on any format especially from new artists. I can't even think of what other song from Gavin Rossdale charted so it must have been a mild hit.
This is a article about Eric Hutchinson but it has a good quote about David in it: http://www.antimusic.com/news/09/nov/20Eric_Hutchinson_EP_Coming.shtml
Quote: "OK, It's Alright With Me," a Top 5 hit at Triple A radio earlier this year, is now climbing the charts at the Hot AC format, where it's already #31* after only a month. Hutchinson joins Gavin Rossdale, David Cook and Lady GaGa in the short list of new artists to have a second single chart at Hot AC in 2009.

There are so many new CDs out, often with multiple versions, that are charting high in their first few weeks. Charting always being within a context, it likely takes more "extra" sales to climb up the itunes chart or even to maintain your status. I anticipate a pretty big hit this weekend, as the new CDs for next week will go for sale a day earlier, meaning that you'll have a bunch of new CDs on Monday, with CDs from the past week only being 6 days old. It will also likely impact the songs rankings, as multiple non-single-tracks from these various new CDs hit the song charts.

DCTR is down to #832 this morning, but I wouldn't make too much of that. Again, below a certain level of sales I believe large differences in rank can translate into much less significant differences in actual sales than you might think. Maybe only a few hundred less than before, I imagine. I am still puzzled by it, especially after the recent epic shows, but I don't take it to be that meaningful, still. I wonder if the Christmas music intruding is having an impact? Windy is #557.
I suspect we will be tracking Declaration sales after Monday and Lie sales after the Carrie show. Never fear, charters, these should both generate something to watch! Even if they are not singles per se, I suspect they will generate some sales that will be visible. I just put up a recap of last night on the tour thread, BTW! Thanks to HappyDance and QueenJ for your enabling!

Come on 19... announce something else for us to dissect marketing-wise. Throw us a bone, will ya!
For real. I keep thinking if I were to ASSUME that Mr. Cook's management team has made some missteps, LOL...and then actually decided to "Man Up", what measures might we see to fix it.
My list is long. But the first three go like this:
-Quickly release a new single off DCTR with appropriate promo.
-Promise of a third AND fourth album for Mr. Cook IN WRITING. (Paybacks are a mother.)
-A genuine, honest to god, push into the rock market for an UNEDITED version of Bar-ba-sol. So anything David releases in the future will be accepted.
Sooo, RCA/19, go now, and have these three items done by next week, please. You'll make me a very, happy David Cook Fan.
I really need him to perform another new song. I'm getting antsy here. I have to have something to track. I can't occupy myself with Season 8 forever. Damn you Dave!

Attn Web Nerds: The spam filter issue is back once again.
I also think that, as far as CJT is concerned, we should all think when raising comparisons: does this shed any light on DC's present or future? Because, realistically, that's what CJT's core mission is: to discuss DC's chart history, present, and future, and the strategies that may apply to DC and his music in the future. For example, Carrie, like Taylor Swift before her, did an itunes strategy where she released itunes singles for a few weeks in a row before her album release---only one of which was her actual lead radio single. Then, people who bought those singles could complete the album when it went on sale at the beginning of November. Is that strategy better than, say, an itunes pass or a preorder with bonus track in terms of creating excitement and sales?
Similarly, Daughtry recently appeared on the CMAs, and his record and the (non-radio-single) song that he performed got boosts. This is relevant to the issue that we've discussed, that DC staying rock but also touching on country could be a benefit to him.
To me, these are the kinds of Idol comparisons that are relevant to DC at this stage in his career, now that he's not the newbie, so to speak. And they strike me as both fruitful and interesting topics, but also core CJT. YMMV.

I echo FolkFan's sentiments about fanwaring. Already seeing it on Twitter and seaping into DWoP today. I think comparisons are relevant and fine. Judgements and long posts about annoyances are best left elsewhere, IMO. I just remember us comparing David to previous Idols and discussing the expectations heaped upon them. So in that light, we should feel free to do the same with this year's guys, and look at that JBJ article for some sage perspective. But please! No fanwaring!
I want David to release more singles from THIS album! I want! I want! Breathe Tonight, Avalanche, Permanent! Come on! I want!

Squirrellygirl
[Commences praying that fanwarring that has occurred at other sites is not brought to CJT.]
Ahem. That estimate almost certain means that Carrie is going to hit gold this week. She was only, what, about 65K away from gold? HDD would have to be off by a lot for her to miss it this week. And her promo is still going strong, including a certain holiday show on 12/7 guest-starring a certain rock star whom we all know.

HDD updated predictions for THIS week's sales (finals to be posted next Wednesday):
* John Mayer (Columbia) 290-315k
Andrea Bocelli (Decca) 190-200k
* Norah Jones (Blue Note) 150-160k
* 50 Cent (Aftermath/Interscope) 140-150k
* Casting Crowns (Provident/Reunion) 140-150k
* Justin Bieber (Island/IDJ) 110-120k
Michael Jackson’s This Is It (Epic) 95-105k
Carrie Underwood (19/Arista Nashville) 90-100k
* Kris Allen (19/RCA/RMG) 85-90k
Taylor Swift Fearless (Big Machine) 85-90k
Twilight Saga: New Moon (Chop Shop/Atlantic) 75-80k
* Them Crooked Vultures (Interscope) 70-75k
* Denotes debut
So our newest American Idol, Kris Allen, is predicted to sell no more than 90k. They have him in the top 10 at least. Next week, when AL debuts, we'll have a lot more information about the kind of start AI8's top boys are really off to. I ended that with a preposition. Sorry. I do think it's relevant to post this here, and compare it to David's debut (the deep recession was already underway). As you can see Carrie is doing great. Probably gold next week... hopefully on her way to platinum and beyond.
Excellent article Scott. thanks for posting.
ETA: I liked your article...but evidently the Capt. didn't like my post. Ready to send Dublin and BBS after him. LOL

DCTR is at #475 this morning on iTunes. Windy is #537.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift's 53 week old Fearless pulled in 91,380 (HDD final today). That's a real WTF situation lol! Some things just cannot be explained.
Actually I believe it's her new deluxe version of Fearless which has six new songs on it and whatever else included, that's probably what you're referring to, although her original Fearless cd is still charting too I think.
At first glance, that new radio bill sounds wonderful! I am very heartened to read this. And hope it will open up a new/old era for radio, which has gone downhill for a long time after being co-opted by corporations.
Cathy, we have, and it's a discussion worth continuing. I am thrilled that this BI-PARTISAN bill has made it this far. The company that employs me, not so much.
--
Have we talked about this before?
"The SENATE COMMERCE COMMITTEE has just voted unanimously to pass the LOCAL COMMUNITY RADIO ACT (S. 592), hat would add hundreds of new low-power FM (LPFM) radio stations nationwide. The bill, introduced by Sen. MARIA CANTWELL (D-WA) and Sen. JOHN MCCAIN (R-AZ) with six co-sponsors, now goes to the full Senate.
AHouse version of the LOCAL COMMUNITY RADIO ACT has already made it out of the HOUSE ENERGY AND COMMERCE COMMITTEE. "Today’s vote brings us one step closer to a new golden era of radio -- where music, news and information that matter to local communities are back on the dial," FREE PRESS Program Coordinator CANDACE CLEMENT said. "Passing this bill will open up the airwaves to hundreds of new noncommercial radio stations and offer a much needed alternative to the cookie-cutter format that dominates the radio dial. Today’s vote shows that policymakers are hearing and responding to the widespread public support for expanding local radio across the country. They should not delay in voting the LOCAL COMMUNITY RADIO ACT into law." "
http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/67202/update-senate-comm...
So, one of these days the stranglehold that big corporations have on radio may be broken. That has to be a good thing for music, especially indie artists. Hopefully giving some control back to local program directors will allow musicians to establish relationships with each station that last, and will allow music that isn't totally generic a way to take off one station at a time.

David should stop singing so well and put on a long blonde wig.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of bump David's appearance on Carrie's special causes, if any. I've got to believe something will come of it with X-mas just around the corner and with an audience a bit different from his usual, i.e., more country-oriented.
PeachMango, it's even worse this year for AI8. I think AL was more of a "frontrunner" with a "surprise" loss than Archie was, and Kris was never as strong a contestant as David was. We all assume Kris's album will do ok but nowhere near David's 280k, and AL is a crapshoot. Lots of hype, but right now, his two singles' sales and a seemingly bungled launch of them have generated huge amounts of angst and debate on the other blog(s). Plus, neither versions of No Boundaries charted. Last year David had a HUGE hit in TOML going into LO, and LO was charting nicely going into DCTR. It all seems so well planned now. This year, no coronation song carried Kris thru the summer, and the signs are for OK but not stellar debuts numbers wise. And radio is coming along for Kris' single, but no better than LO did so their fans don't have a huge success like TOML to hold onto & track with glee. AMAs will surely give AL a nice boost. At least last year we had that fantastic SNL performance to leave a great flavor in our mouth the entire month of Davember. I say all this, as we look back at the last year, to see how fortunate David and his fans have been.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift's 53 week old Fearless pulled in 91,380 (HDD final today). That's a real WTF situation lol! Some things just cannot be explained.
Bon Jovi's new album debuted at 165,871, but sometimes artists who've been around for decades don't do much better. Does anyone know if their album debuted everywhere, or was it limited this week? I expected at least 200k from them.
Switchfoot debuted at 33,286. David is now a much bigger star than the band he covered. That's what AI does for a mega-talent!

Good to see the rebound on iTunes. I know many of us were linking to the DC iTunes page in our tweets last night as part of the trending party. It looks like there might have been some bites as a result.
DCTR continues to rebound on iTunes at #414. Windy is #538.
Geez -- You know what's so great about right now? We are NOT chewing our fingernails waiting for weekly sales and spin numbers for DCTR anymore! I mean, peeps are still keeping track but it's no longer a source of much angst. I just came back from mjsbigblog and feel so sorry for the invested S8 fans. They are exactly where we were last year -- and thankfully we already know how our (well, his) story ends (at least for this first record)!
Here are the chart histories for Windy and Magic Rainbow (year 2) on Billboard:

@dctr: I always knew that hanging out with the Rainbow would give me a strong character and backbone, the kind you need to survive in this tough music market.
@magicrainbow: Thank you, DCTR! You are, of course, right.
@dctr: Also, a good sense of tact.
@magicrainbow: And what do you mean by that? Growl. Snarl.
@dctr: Also the wisdom to point out that using a flamethrower on me is the equivalent of using a flamethrower on yourself, ninja. Seeing as how you are included on my track list.
@magicrainbow: Dammit!

Giant sweet hugz to @magicrainbow. I loved *you* first. As did many of us. And still do!
I will post a Billboard chart history for Windy and for Magic Rainbow later, but as a note: This marks Magic Rainbow's 26th week on the AC Recurrent chart, which means that the Rainbow has officially been charting for 1.5 calendar years on Billboard radio format charts.
@magicrainbow: Told you this week's celebrations were All About Me. C'mon. You know you want to give me hugz. Give into the temptation.

Happy Anniversary DCTR! I was such a mess watching the charts last year.
Is it time for more champagne, yet?
Wonderful anniversary. Wonderful numbers. While today is the anniversary date of DCTR, it did happen on a Tuesday. For nostalgia, y'all should read back on CJT from Page 570, which marked our live blogging of DCTR's launch. So I'm fast forwarding since it's Wednesday, and this time (Wednesday) last year we were starting get some real sales numbers:

This is the quote from HDD
A double dose of Beyonce and her alter ego will grab the top spot on the HITS Album Sales chart next week, as her two-CD Music World/Columbia set, I Am… Sasha Fierce, will debut at #1 with 500-550k in sales, according to those hardy retailers who still have their doors open.
The real tussle will be right below that for #2, as a debuting RCA/RMG’s David Cook and Roadrunner’s Nickelback go head-to-head with this week’s chart-topper, Big Machine’s Taylor Swift, in her second week. All look to be in the 300k range, mas o menos.

The rainbow is platinum!
The Time of My Life slips 125-127 but is up 14% to 11,000, and achieves the milestone of 1 million sales!
Of course I had to mention The Rainbow, because when he hit platinum the next day, well, that was a wonderful capper on a fabulous day. And The Rainbow has his flamethrower, y'all, just in case anyone forgot. Heh. It was fun now reading our collective concerns. The highs and lows of DCTR tracking have been awesome this past year. It's been a pleasure learning, sharing, and progressing with all of you. Thanks for some great times, y'all.
eta: Hugz The Rainbow.
