WILL BE POSTED IN THE FIRST PINNED REPLY TO THIS THREAD

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey everyone! I thought I'd create a discussion thread for each stop of the Declaration Tour in an effort to keep the boards organized and help everyone more easily find info related to each event (and have a record of everything in one place for anyone wanting to look back on these events sometime in future). The following is how these threads will work (subject to change):
>> Thread pinned to the top of or on the main David Cook Discussion forum for 24-48 hrs
>> Thread moved and pinned to the top of or on the main Tour Talk forum for 24-48 hrs
>> Thread moved to its respective regional Tour Talk forum
If, for some reason, a thread isn't moved right away, it will be eventually.
What should be posted here? Related local radio/tv/press, on-site reports/photos, live blogging, recaps, media and fan reviews, links to related blogs, event photos/videos, etc., etc.
Please post links to photos instead of embedding them and please disable graphic footers as this will make the thread easier to read (especially when live blogging). Regarding PRE-SHOW set list spoilers, please either PM me the info so that I may post it as hidden text in the first pinned reply or, alternatively, if I am not hosting or not here for whatever reason, then please post the spoilers to a blog and link that blog back to this thread in your reply.
As always, I welcome comments/questions, as well as info, via PM. Thank you. ~Lisa
My ADAM video has finally finished.
The only other videos I have are KOTN and Anodyne, both of which are broken in two parts for different reasons (KOTN, security interrupted and I had to stop briefly...Anodyne, my memory card ran out and I had to quickly change it in the middle of the song). I'll get them started (the lighting effect at the end of Anodyne turned out pretty well) a little later this evening.
Loved your recap, cece! Don't feel bad about just posting it now, I haven't even started mine yet.
I do have another video up, though. Bar-Ba-Sol with Kyle's opening drum solo.
Also, someone mentioned Neal on the speaker during LO. And apparently I moved my camera with him instead of holding it still as he was jumping off. He looks somewhat clear, while everything else is moving. Oy!
A little bit late, darn RL is no fun, but I posted a recap of my Wartburg College concert experience in my profile:
So a band walks into a bar
All the others that were in attendance did a way better job of providing photos and video and commentary, but I always devour every bit that I can from other concerts so I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring. Enjoy!
Jen, your Heroes video is fabulous! Great picture quality and sound. I didn't even think it was too shakey, either. I hope you will upload the rest of your videos for us, they are really good!
Thanks, sylvanaire! Heroes wasn't too shakey because I was still sitting down, so I had the camera resting on my leg. LOTM is the same. The later ones where I'm standing (and I had my LCD screen closed so security wouldn't see it) are a little more wonky. Especially Breathe Tonight, which has some very nice shots of the ceiling and lighting rack!
I'm working on getting more up there...so far Breathe Tonight, LOTM, and Hot 4 Teacher (including a good shot of Dave giving Neal a shoulder rub during the guitar solo) have finished. Hopefully my PC at home is still working on BBS and ADAM. All of my videos will be at http://www.youtube.com/user/fsdwx
I didn't record LO, but I have a couple of pictures of Neal on the speaker. They are on my PC at home, so I will have to upload them later tonight.
ETA: Dang it! (tm Archie) I just watched luvzDC's video of Hot 4 Teacher, and since I zoomed in on Neal during the solo, I didn't realize I missed a DC backbend! Gah!
ETAA: Corrected link to H4T video. Thanks, Patti!
Thanks Wavelength and luvzDC (you changed your name again!), and iowadcfan for getting your videos up for everyone. Apparently I'm not quite YT savvy yet, because mine are still trying. My PC kept going to sleep, which doesn't help I'm sure. :facepalm: I'm still trying, but it at least looks like everything I got is covered by someone now, so probably not much to hold your breath over.
I don't know about anyone else, but David had me right from the start. I was kind of depressed about how it took everyone else so long to get up and going, but the people right down in front were doing a pretty good job with it. I, for one, was jumping up and down and screaming and rocking (but I've been to quite a few concerts in my day) It was so awesome from where I was! I was right up front and he rocked the house! I didn't really look behind me much, so I guess the rest of the crowd might have been very tame. But really, the boys did an amazing job last night and I was very glad to have been a part of it (and hearing Anodyne as the first time he performed it was a blessing!)
42 ≡ 6 (mod 6) [Wavelength] I "Heart" Red and so does Dave!
I've watched the vids and it seems that, as the night went on, the audience got more responsive. We, David and The EEB, have gotten used to loud crowds and singing along. I wasn't there, but considering what I've read here about this audience, they were probably being as they were brought up to be, respectful of the performers by listening more quietly than some might. They might not have been exposed to many rock concerts, and the guys in the audience probably enjoyed this more than a lot of the girls; which is not a bad thing at all.
It's interesting. The only video we don't have is LO.
I have LO on video, but alas, no Neal on the speaker, because the kid in front of me got his head in the way. I had to keep the camera snugged up to my chest, because I had a security person was right behind me. It is a bit rough in the beginning, but once she left, I was able to hold the camera more steady. Youtube is taking forever to load today. I will keep going until I have them all loaded.
I've posted my photos from this show in my Photobucket at: http://s453.photobucket.com/albums/qq256/kbav_bucket/David%20Cook%20at%2...
I found these online.
Hope they're accurate.
Anodyne
Baby, it's our hearts' slow beating
That make us grow old
I mean to say there's no one helping
We're digging our own hole
I'm reading your words
They're scrawled on the page
They lay here in silent rage
I'll hold you to this for as long as I breathe
Much more than whispers
If I ever found a one leaf clover
It would be you
Wishing that such heights were lower
And nothing is new
Citing your verse
It couldn't sound worse
The black recital I did rehearse
We all die alone as I'm clenching this phone
I can't imagine a slowing hearse
How many times will I play the hero
How many lies before it's true
How many times will we clock out at zero
How many tries before we're through
How many lives 'til another you
The scars are slowly healing
The lips have regained feeling
The obstacles are kneeling
The final wax is sealing
The great white ships are sailing
The feet have left their railing
The four last hooves are hailing
How many times will I play the hero
How many lies before it's true
How many times will we clock out at zero
How many tries before we're through
How many lives 'till another you
Baby, it's our hearts' slow beating
That make us grow old
I mean to say there's no one helping
We're digging our own hole
Guys, you're projecting. Don't feel THAT bad for the guys, because they are used to it, and they expect it. EVERY single entertainer will tell you stories of a bizarre night when it was simply a "tough room." From Streisand to Elton John to EVERY indie rocker who has to pull teeth at a club LOL! Seriously, big, established rock acts tend to get a nice rowdy crowd, but David is still an unknown to many, and he's billed at some of these small, religious-based colleges as the American Idol Champ. I'm sure the guys were somewhat frustrated, and it's dissapointing, but they'll get over it. Because tonight they may just bring the house down. They're confident, they're uber-talented, and they're pragmatic. They'll rock the next concert and feel all charged up again. David and the guys would never let last night's experience bum them out and rob their energy. They've played far too many dives in their lives. They know how to deal with it.
It's just a thought, but perhaps the crowd was low key because it was a week night and not a weekend. The "vibe" can be different just because of that fact alone. I am off to read what the students had to say.
Too bad about the video police, but the sound on these are superb!
I was wondering about the venue...at first I thought the audience was rhythmically-challenged, but I see it's a private Christian college.
Dunno, the "survey of the week" at Wartburg Online had my mind reeling.
I dont usually read ppl's comments on youtube, but I saw someone say David's HFT better than original by Van Halen & of course, some Van Halen fan who doesnt agree.
I am not sure who Van Halen is, [pleez dont make me listen to them!] exactly, beside being a band big in the 80's, so I cant compare, but I know 4 sure Neal could out-shred anybody on this side of Jimmy Page! So there! *dusts off hands & goes on her way*
DAVID COOK
It's interesting. The only video we don't have is LO. I guess it's because we've become so comfortable with it we don't expect anything new, except......Neal was up on the amp?!! I really hope it turns up somewhere.
I never intended to offend anyone in reference to Ryan's language. I can see why others may have assumed this was going to be a family friendly show, though on AI he was billed as the rocker so perhaps that might have been considered. While I may not be offended by this language and rarely use it myself, I do regret my insensitivity on the subject.
In defense of the people who "gasped" at the f-bomb, I'm from Iowa, within 10 miles of 2 private Christian colleges. If there was a concert at one of these two colleges which advertised the main act as the winner of American Idol, I would not expect to hear the f-bomb in concert. Even though it might be acceptable language in your part of the country, it would not be appropriate in my area. It is all about being aware of the culture and norms of the community. And personally, I don't think that Ryan's usage of said language enhanced the show in any way, but your mileage may vary.
DC has a good sense of what is appropriate and what isn't. There were young children waiting to meet him that afternoon at the buses, and I'm sure he was aware that they would be in the audience. Hence, his set was a PG - G show that night. Apparently, Ryan was not informed of the make-up of the audience, or did not feel it was necessary to change his usual format. But I would not condemn those in the audience for their surprise at the language that was used by Ryan Starr. It was a private, Christian college, after all.
Another great show from David and the guys! Wish I could say the same for the crowd. There were actually audible gasps behind me when Ryan Star dropped the F bomb - where did these people think they were going?!
Wasn't that nice young couple with the 4 year old boy right behind you? Note my emphasis on 4 year old boy. I think a lot of people thought they were going to see an American Idol. It is a small town college in the middle of Iowa. Not to call them hicks or anything, but it ain't the big city and it isn't a big university. I just hope they could see that he has a great voice. He gave them a mixture of song, song styles and he didn't play Man in the Box!
Here is Breathe Tonight!
Life on the Moon has been uploaded and is in the processing stage. Check for it on my channel in a few minutes.
Jen, thanks again for the great time yesterday, and the offer for a bed at your friend's house. It made the world of difference at work today. By the way, my voice is gone - it's only a croak now, not totally due to screaming at the concert. That virus that I picked up at UNI is a doozy.
I'm offering an apology to everyone who tried to listen to the cellcast last night. I wasn't paying attention to my phone. I was too busy trying to get video, so I missed that fact that it was having a minor malfunction with the loudspeaker option. I hope that the news we garnered about BBS and the videos we brought back help to make up for some of your angst from last night.
42 ≡ 6 (mod 6) [Wavelength] I "Heart" Red and so does Dave!
Thanks for the videos everyone! Sounds like the venue made you work to get them this time. I'm loving the Anodyne videos in particular. That song has been one of my least favorite MWK songs, but I love it with Dave's voice. Somehow his heavier, richer tone just sounds more right for this song. I was the opposite with Make Me- it took a while took get used to hearing David instead of Andy on it.
The reason for the hand motion at the end was because the microphone had fallen off of the stand to the stage when he had lifted it up towards the crowd for them to sing at the end. It sort of diminished the awesome effect of the crowd singing acappella, and I think that Dave was disappointed that it ended that way.
This was my take on it, too, after watching my video back. He wasn't upset about the crowd, he was upset at the equipment failing, especially during that moment which is usually so special.
Tue, 02/24/2009 - 12:26 — Porcelain
Another great show from David and the guys! Wish I could say the same for the crowd. There were actually audible gasps behind me when Ryan Star dropped the F bomb - where did these people think they were going?! David did an awesome job though of trying to get the crowd on their feet (didn't take much prompting for me though). He was his usual fantastic self out by the buses, even foregoing his own warmth to get his leather jacket from the bus to loan to a cold student staff member. This move drew an AWWW from the crowd to which he reacted in surprise, he didn't seem to feel this was awww worthy, just something you do for another person. What a sweetie, I love him!
Regarding the reaction to Ryan, the college guys in front of us were lovin' it when Ryan did that. It was funny to watch them, sort of giggling almost. And I didn't realize David had gone in to get his jacket specifically for the student. I saw the student with it on, but thought he was just holding it until David had a moment to put it on. I'm sorry I called him a "dolt" in my earlier post about that...though he still really should have been wearing a jacket. It was chilly out there, and he did sound like he still had or was in recovery from a cold (sort of like me for the last week!).
I've got my videos onto the computer, and will start uploading any that I don't see links for already, which looks like Heroes and Breathe Tonight, so far. I'll be back to post links when I have them.
ETA: Looks like luvzCC beat me to Heroes, but mine's in the middle of uploading, too. Breathe Tonight and LOTM will follow. In the meantime, here a picture of the cool lighting toward the end of Anodyne.
Wow, Waverly students are really online as far as colleges go. They have a page for them to submit their concert reports and pictures.
http://info.wartburg.edu/thecircuit/
This is the kind of audience that David needs to win over if he is going to advance to the next level of superstardom. Seems to me he did a really good job. Imagine the students thinking they were going to a pleasant show by that nice American Idol guy. I'm glad that there were students up front - they need to experience him that way too. I will always be happier for him when there are lots of potential new fans in the audience.
--
42 ≡ 6 (mod 6) [Wavelength] I "Heart" Red and so does Dave!
It might just be he wasn't feeling well... he said he was getting sick Friday night in GB so it would make sense if he didn't feel that great Saturday then they had Sunday off and Monday maybe not completely recovered but getting better.
Heliotrope he was a lot happier than Saturday. I was at both shows. He was very friendly after the show laughing a lot also.
I was watching the videos, especially ADAM...the crowd does seem a bit lackluster, and David himself seems a bit off, as if something was bothering him. I can't explain what it is specifically, but I didn't feel like he was happy last night, and I felt sorry for him, I just want to tell him how loved he is.
John Tesh, I don't think so. The students who stayed after the show really were excited. You've got to remember they probably don't know the songs, so its hard to get into them. There was student in front of me who danced and sang the whole time. She was having a ball. Her boyfriend was taping (maybe some of his stuff will end up on YT. For some reason the video police weren't catching him) and he seemed to be enjoying himself.
David is still a new artist and this concert was in a small town at a small university. The place was packed with potential new fans. Some who went thinking it was the way to spend a Monday night with that soft AC singer from American Idol might have come out with a whole new idea of who David is. For the most part with college students that is going to be a good idea. There were way more college students there than public unlike some of the other shows. There was a buzz in the air at the end of the evening.
If I went to a show where I knew none of the music or only one or two songs I knew were played, I might not be up singing swaying or rocking out either.
I think last night's concert is proof that David made the right decision in doing this college tour. Fact is that he's in a transition mode of his career. He's bridging the AI exposure to his emerging career as a rock artist. There are some like most on these boards that have long ago taken that jump. But to the public at large, it's still a process in the making. And that greater public are the ones who David is going to need to cookify, one concert, one single (or in this case, two) at a time. All the more reason to wait to play larger venues until the marinating process (the Declaration Tour) is complete.
It's also an important learning process, as was the little fall. Those times when you have to really stretch yourself, when things aren't going so easily, that's what will make David an even better performer. Maybe not so much fun for fans to witness, or David to experience, but in the long run, it's a very important part of the process.
I feel bad for the guys.....they give it their all and the crowd just stands there.
I hope they know it wasn't them, because they were spot on again.
Maybe this school should stick to John Tesh in the future.
42 ≡ 6 (mod 6) [Wavelength] I "Heart" Red and so does Dave!
Annette, can you bring over the link to that student website? I'd love to read the comments.
Dave sounded great on Anodyne it must feel awesome to be playing all of these pre-idol songs. Thanks for getting videos and risking getting caught be security.
I agree browneyedwoman. Right now there are going to be some college venues (i.e. this venue) were this is a small Lutheran college - were these students probably coming into the concert were not familiar with David's music yet beyond LO and TOML. There have been reports though that the students were very excited about the event - in fact they have a website up to provide feedback and the feedback has been very positive. So at the end of the day - David/EEB has added additional new fans to the fanbase.
While I know I will be totally bummed if my crowd is like the one last night when I go to the concert in Conway, but I hope that I can keep in mind that David is trying to introduce new fans to his music and while we have had what 3-4 months to learn his songs, some of these people have probably only heard TOML and LO... too bad they don't buy the album BEFORE the concert and learn 'em , but I guess that ain't the normal progression of things.
It is hard to decide if I think DC should fill his audience with fans to have a super concert every night; or have an okay interaction with crowd to win over some new fans.
So maybe he can do 1/2 and 1/2 where he can have some totally fan events so the audience is 150% into it some of the time and newbies.
Oh well, what do you do?
After seeing" A Daily AntheM" and seeing most of the audience sitting down thru half of the song I think David was a little hurt and frustrated. The band and David gave 120% and the audience did not respond back. I think they should let the fans sit in the front. ha ha franniew
As IowaDCFan said on our drive back it was like the crowd was there for AC artist David Cook not David Cook rocker. I don't know if they were expecting stuff like American Idol, but towards the end they were FINALLY getting into it. Once David got folks standing, I didn't sit down.
David seemed to be feeling better, but I was nearly crushed so I didn't get to ask. I'm still flying high from last night on 3 freakin' hours of sleep!
