The MWK rocks thread!

There's been some recent "off topic" discussion of Midwest Kings in other threads, so I thought it might be fun to start a thread here where it should be okay to discuss them.

I would love to see more MWK music as a sort of side project for any/all of the guys in the future.

Current MWK Band Members:
Andy Skib (lead vocals, guitar)
Neal Tiemann (lead guitar, backing vocals)
David Cook (guitar, backing vocals)
Kyle Peek (drums)
Joey Clement (bass)

I purchased a new Waiting for the End and this time I got the entire song. Woo Hoo!

RenoSnow, I'd try downloading that one song over again.

"Home, From Memory" is definitely my favorite from this EP. Now I need to listen to all three Lunas one right after the other so I can try to figure out what the story is. I'm so bad at interpreting lyrics. LOL

Not me. You may have had an issue with your download. Love that song...so depressing, LOL.

Love all the songs. Brilliant writing and vocals. Quality tunes!!

My Waiting for the End cuts off at the 3:58 mark. Anyone else have this happen?

The new EP is ready for download!! Go get it!!!

thanks zoo, for the "to have heroes" youtubes! they came out great!

I heard it this morning. I can't get over how the song style has grown and martured. Not saying there was anything wrong with the MWK songs at their earlier stage, but it is very satisfying to see such growth. You can see the writing and vocals maturing and it is exhilarating. What's next?

Jeannine

As I'm sure everyone knows by now, "Home, From Memory" is streaming in full at mwkmusic.com. It's such a great song! Can't wait for the rest of the EP this week. Smiling

Latest tweet...
"The EP is (hopefully) out next week! Is everyone ready?"

Very excited!!!

Vids are all up. The youtube subscription is jbotting99. I'm really pleased with how they turned out. The sound is quite good given the crowd and the speakers. Bravo Delta's set will get posted soon for anyone that is interested.

Jeannine

My hubby's vids are still loading. Just put up a couple more. Only two left to go. I'm pleased that he stood on top of one of the side benches against the wall and, in doing so, was able to get all 4 guys in the vids plus pretty decent sound.

Jeannine

Here is Make Me from jsalow2's You Tube channel. The other songs are there as well when you click the videos icon under the title, but when I try to copy his channel url, I get called spam!

Videos from last night via zoo's husband: http://www.youtube.com/user/jbotting99?feature=watch
Thanks, Jeannine and hubby!

I concur with Zoo. MWK had a great set and Brandon Saller was terrific on drums, although Kyle Peek's frenetic-blur drumming was missed. A big shoutout to Tim Halperin, who was awesome in his set and a very nice and personable guy. Idol did get it wrong last year by letting this guy go before the audience got a chance to vote. Overall a very good night for music in LA. Hurry up with that MWK EP!

The boys did themselves proud tonight. We got 12 songs and that place rocked. Many thanks to Brandon Saller for his help on drums and vocals and to Bravo Delta for their fantastic set. It was a beautiful evening. Hope we can do it again soon.

Jeannine

Have fun, everyone attending the show tonight!

'Luna Se Hunde' is up on Amazon - link below - page shows a 06/12/12 release date.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0084ALBCO/ref=dm_sp_alb?ie=UTF8&qid=13...

I think it will be great, indeed. I'm actually a little excited to see Brandon play drums. I have only seen him play in videos with Atreyu. One night, Joey Bradford couldn't make an HOH show, so Brandon played bass while singing lead. I don't think there is an instrument he can't play well. I will certainly miss Kyle, but it is like worlds colliding for me. I think Kyle got a great replacement for the show.

Jeannine

Kinda bummed that Kyle won't be there. But I'm sure it'll still be a great show. Smiling

Due to a scheduling conflict, Kyle can't make the show on the 25th. Brandon Saller is pulling drum duty. I'm sure he can handle the job. One week to go!

Jeannine

Good question. I'm tending to think it may be digital only due to cost but I would certainly love a copy. The songs are rich in layers. I think I hear Kyle singing. Beautiful exciting stuff. I usually only listen once, but I found myself listening 4 times already, LOL.

I'm gonna refrain from listening to the snippets in the hope that I'm introduced to all the new songs at the show next Friday.

Still wondering if the EP will be available for sale at the show. Seems like it *could* be, if they don't do a digital-only release like they did with Luna E.

Exciting times are on their way!!

Check out these snippets of Luna Se Hunde EP!!!

Hmmm...Not sure about hotels around there. It is located on Fairfax just past Wilshire, so a couple blocks south of The Grove and CBS Studios. I guess there must be something around there but I'm not sure what. It is actually closer to me than most venues we go to.

Jeannine

I can't bring myself to stop working long enough to buy my plane ticket. LOL. And I don't know whether I'm gonna fly out on Thursday or Friday. Thursday is about $60 cheaper, but if I have to pay for a second night of a hotel, it would probably be cheaper to just go on Friday. And I gotta find a good hotel that's close to the venue. Do you know of one, Jeannine?

There is a show scheduled on 5/25/12 at Molly Malone's in LA. Bravo Delta will also perform. Come on out and share in the fun!! Gonna be an amazing night.

Jeannine

Per the MWK twitter account, the guys are gettin' started on the third and final Luna EP in the near future. Yay!

(Can't say I'm surprised they're doing it this soon, since Neal told me that he already had all the songs written for the next EP.)

Here's the link to sign Neal's birthday card: http://t.co/Gkw8yGx

Thanks to iNaughtiest for the use of some of her pics of Neal with Hell or Highwater for the front of the card.

There is also an Amazon gift card attached if anyone wants to add to it.

Please spread the word.

That's how I feel about the ocean and its inhabitants. They have their place and I have mine. I never thought about the letters in Luna D, Luna E, LOL.

Jeannine

Ohh Ok, gotcha. That's very interesting indeed. I'm not really *afraid* of the ocean, but I don't see why people swim in it when we could swim in swimming pools. To me, it's invading the animals' territory. People go out into the ocean and get bit by a shark or stung by a jellyfish, and they get all mad. I mean really? YOU invaded THEIR territory, and you get upset when they attack you? No mercy from me. LOL

Anywho...yay MWK, and all that jazz. And come to think of it, I forgot to mention something from my convo with Neal. I asked him if the next EP would be Luna F -- since I noticed that the first two are Luna D. and Luna E. He laughed and said that was a total coincidence, but now he might have to rethink the name of the third one! If it ends up being Luna F., I'll be tickled pink haha

He has a fear of the ocean, which is kind of ironic given that he lives near one now, LOL. I'm the same way, though. I love living next to the ocean, but you won't find me venturing out into the water. I said to him, "You sure refer to the ocean a lot in your tunes." "It is because I'm terrified of it." I guess the thing that haunts our dreams make for good topics in songs.

Jeannine

Jeannine, has he told you why he writes about the ocean and ships? Is it because of his fear of water? Or is that just what we're assuming?

I believe that Neal told me he was on an overseas flight when he wrote that song. I have to tease him about writing so much about ships and water and the like when he is so terrified of the ocean. Fear is another emotion that can result in great music.

Also, he already has all the songs for the next EP, and knows the title. He wouldn't tell me what it was, though. haha.

So that means that a new EP should be out in a month or two, right? Haha. I might be a bit too addicted...

Interesting different takes on "The Captain, His Ship." I suppose it isn't terribly similar to Luna Despierta. To be honest, I was comparing it in my mind more to Incoherent With Desire to Move On. That was my very first MWK EP, so I tend to think of those songs when I think of the band in general.

Talked to Neal last night after the HoH show here in Tucson. Got the writing credits for Luna Espera. Neal wrote all the songs himself except for With Me Empty, which he cowrote with Andy.

Also, he already has all the songs for the next EP, and knows the title. He wouldn't tell me what it was, though. haha.

That's what I love about MWK's music. I like to say it's morose.

MayaWolf, funny you should say that "The Captain, His Ship" is reminiscent of their former work. I think it's the *least* reminiscent of their former work -- or at least of their most recent work, Luna Despierta.

Not sure Neal can write a song without it being a bit unsettling, LOL. So many of them sit just on the brink of darkness.

Jeannine

Even though I haven't been around (real life crops up at the worst times), I've been eating up the new EP! I absoloutly adore it. Fantastic lyrics, interesting melodies, and of course, superb vocals. My favorites are With Me Empty and The Captain, His Ship. The former is likely because it has a harder edge to it, and the later is likely because it sounds remenicent of former work. The other three caught me off gaurd, but not in a bad way. The music is much more unsetteling, and it takes a couple listens to get past the anxious feeling, haha.

I still have this EP on repeat, if that says anything.

Wow, well now I feel like a tag-a-long, but I feel the same about Mean To You and With Me Empty. Two fantastic songs. I still have Andy's voice in my head singing "all i have to do my love is mean to you what you mean to me". His voice in the lower register there just kills me.

Nicole Your blog about Luna Espera is awesome and extremely well written.

coolshades I'm looking forward to hearing about what answers you get from Neal. I'm trying to think of what to ask him when I go to the H0H show in December. At least I'm hoping I'll get to talk to him.

Agreed. That chorus sticks in my head like mad all the time. Anytime something from Espera sticks in my head, it's either that chorus or that bridge. It's definitely the catchiest song on the record. Love it.

For me it's the chorus. It's ridiculously catchy.

I really really really hope to be able to talk to Neal next Sunday night at the HoH show. Then I can ask him a billion questions about Luna Espera. lol

That *was* an incredibly short comment, Coolie. In my e-mail I couldn't even tell what it was, lol! I had to go to my blog to see it. Laughing out loud

Isn't it funny... "Mean to You" was my instant favorite as well (though probably for a different reason than yours, Coolie, lol). But like you I've found "With Me Empty" creeping up on it as well. Not only for the way it makes me want to dance, but for the bridge. Oh, that bridge. I'm in love.

I added an incredibly short comment to your review, Nicole. Sticking out tongue

I've had Luna Espera on repeat for the last three hours. Would be longer if I didn't have to work. LOL. I mentioned downthread that "Mean to You" was my favorite on first listen. But "With Me Empty" is breathing down its neck. I had that one on repeat last night. I agree with Nicole that it's a song you can dance to. And this is coming from someone who doesn't dance.

Just thought I'd drop off a review I wrote for Luna Espera.

I love this EP so freaking much. <3

Heaven or Worse

Stitching a verse just to make you see
Heaven or worse is in front of me
Pulling apart at the seams I just started to sew
Breaking my heart it just never seems smart to go slow

Stuck in reverse, headlights blinding me
Manners first, good luck finding me
Pulling apart at the seams I just started to sew
Breaking my heart it just never seems smart to go slow

Make me promise, pull me apart
Make me promise, pull me apart
Me apart…

Heaven or worse
Pulling apart at the seams I just started to sew
Breaking my heart it just never seems smart to go slow
Pulling apart at the seams I just started to sew
Breaking my heart it just never seems smart to go slow

LUNA ESPERA It is out on iTunes! Go buy it, rate it, and write a review !

I got curious about Under the Milky Way, so checked out YouTube. Church has the original recording (male vocal). The one I heard was female, so it must have been Sia. I guess it was from a car commercial -- I so seldom watch tv, I never saw it. Anyway, much prefer (of course) Andy.

I've never heard the original "Under the Milky Way." At least I don't think I have.

Jeannine, I agree with you re: "With Me Empty" not making TLM. But you probably figured I would. Sticking out tongue

I just bought Luna Espera; haven't listened to all of it yet, although I've heard some of the songs. Sharing a story; I was shopping today, and the store was playing Under the Milky Way. My first thought was....hmmm, someone's covering a Neal and Andy song. Then I woke up and remembered it's the other way around. Oh, well, to me, it's their song. Smiling

The cover art is so Neal. How can anyone complain?

"Mean To You" is an certainly an awesome song. "With Me Empty" is another wonderful song. I think that those songs are getting a lot of the buzz because they are extremely new to us. "The Captain, His Ship" and "Heaven Or Worse" we have been aware of for a while. Those two songs are equally fabulous, IMO. I do like what was done with "Heaven Or Worse". Loved the guitar solo and the really dark feel. And let's not forget "Hearts Are For Suckers". Heck, the entire EP is full of goodness. Interesting rhythms, beautiful layering (so like Neal to give us so many layers), haunting lyrics.....I could go on and on. I don't think I have heard Andy's voice sound any better. Their whole style has certainly grown and matured. I can't say enough good things about this EP.

I'm sure that everyone will disagree with me, but I'm actually glad "With Me Empty" didn't make TLM. I love listening to Andy sing the song. His vocals are amazing. I'm very happy it made the EP.

I have to laugh a little at how some people didn't like the artwork for the EP. To me, it totally fits the music and would love to see many more of Neal's drawings. He is such an artistic human being.
