The MWK rocks thread!

There's been some recent "off topic" discussion of Midwest Kings in other threads, so I thought it might be fun to start a thread here where it should be okay to discuss them.

I would love to see more MWK music as a sort of side project for any/all of the guys in the future.

MWK!

I hope you're right, Jeannine. I'm not much of a last-minute person, so I'd like some advance notice. Makes for cheaper flights, too! LOL!

I mentioned this over in the Andy thread, but apparently MWK used to cover Yo Arms back in the day, as revealed by David in a recent interview. Wish there was a YouTube of it out there somewhere.

Coolshades, I'm sure that we will get more warning the next time. That performance was during a time when the interest wasn't all that keen. I think they are aware that there is a lot more interest and will try to give everyone advanced notice. I feel lucky that the shows last year were something we could attend at a moment's notice.
Jeannine

SEVEN people? Seriously?? Dang I wish I could have been there. But that was about a month before I became an Andy fan. LOL.

I think a lot of Cook fans who like MWK will want to go see them if and when they do a show. The problem for a lot of folks will be the transportation *and* taking time off work. I doubt they'll announce the shows all that far in advance, and it may be too late for some folks to get the time off or to back out of other commitments. But I'm hopeful that *enough* fans will be able to make the trip that our presence, plus the presence of other (non-Cookified) concert-goers will be enough to pack the house.

Personally, I think he is doing this to torture me because he knows how much I want them to play, LOL.

I was at Paladino's when that video was shot. There were only 7 of us there (and that's including Andy and Neal) when that video was taken along with a smattering of people in the front who were there to see someone else. They did such an awesome job. I sat there absolutely entranced. I sure wish that more people had been there. I'm hoping that, when they do decide to play somewhere, they will have a bunch of people showing up. I know I'll be there, no matter where it is.

Jeannine

Andy tweeted THIS video of him and Neal playing Vera acoustic at a THH gig last year. It's a fairly popular vid among MWK fans, because you can actually hear Neal singing. lol.

I'm wondering if there's any particular reason Andy decided to post this vid on his twitter page. Isn't this the first MWK-related tweet he's made? I'd like to think he's posting MWK stuff because they're announcing some upcoming shows soon, but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part. I still feel that they won't do any shows until January.

barbwyre, it's been awhile since I read that last article you posted, so reading it again was like reading it for the first time. It really is too bad that there aren't some vids on youtube from some of those early MWK shows. In fact, there aren't many vids of MWK *at all.* There's the one Godspeed video, the Hunger Strike video, and a couple of videos from a NYE gig. That's about it.

Article from 2003.

http://www.tulsaworld.com/scene/article.aspx?subjectid=68&articleid=0306...

Time travel would be cool. Except for those complications that always happen to time travelers in movies. That'd be a drawback. But if anyone has video of this and they put it on YouTube...

Definitely sounds like a fan written article. A little too fan written, if you ask me, LOL.

I'm more than ready for some dates to be announced. Can't hold my breath much longer.

Jeannine

As we wait with baited breath for an announcement of a winter MWK show(s), here's something of interest about our favorite musicians. A glowing review of David & the band - actually written as a preview to the upcoming Casino Rama show in Toronto. Each of the band members gets great props. Seems like a DCO fan wrote it!

http://www.spinearth.tv/report/david-cook-bringing-rock-and-the-script-t...

Cook's band consists of legend-in-the-making lead guitarist/music director Neal Tiemann; multi-talented Andy Skib on guitar/keys/primary backup vocalist, and drummer extraordinaire/back up vocalist Kyle Peek. Rounding out the quintet with tremendous bass guitar and pick flinging skills is Tulsa musician Monty Anderson currently "on loan" from Phil Marshall's band. Months on the road have allowed Cook and his band to get that all important synergy to impressive levels yet still exude the freshness and excitement of a debut tour.

Probably several places I could have posted this. I guess here's as good as any. Interesting article from 2004. (I know - most of you have probably seen it already. But not all!)

My calendar for December/January is clear. Part of the reason why I said no to the NYE shows is because I'd rather save my money for MWK. It wouldn't surprise me if we didn't hear an announcement of a date until after the tour ends. I don't expect them to give us much notice, either. I think I had about three weeks notice for Andy's gig last December. To me, that's like planning a trip the day before! LOL

Wish I could afford to travel to see them perform. I will have to wait for kindhearted concertgoers to share their experiences here Sad Not likely they will have concerts anywhere near where I am.

They have said that they will announce once something is firmed up. I'm waiting somewhat impatiently, but I'm waiting, LOL.

Jeannine

Is anyone else hesitant to commit to anything in Dec and Jan until the guys announce MWK dates? LMAO. Yo, Skibby... Doctor... you have out of town fans! Give us travel time, babes.

I recently bought the MWK CDs "Judging a Bullet" and "Midwest Kings". I've been listening to the Midwest Kings CD over and over since I got it. Godspeed and Lemmings - damn, just damn. The whole CD is just amazing rock. Neal is great songwriter and guitar player and I love Andy's voice.

I just wanted to pop in and say that I am currently listening to the musical genius of "Stuck Under Wheels" and I gotta say, there's almost nothing better than hearing Andy's beautiful voice on this song.

Seemed like the appropriate thread to say I dig, dig, dig the entire Incoherent with a Desire to Move On EP. These are terrific songs and I would love for them to get some attention - David, Andy, covers by other artists, whatever. That's some really good songwriting on there.

This may sound like a dumb question but i dont really care haha. I was wondering what Vera is about. I've listened to it prolly about a million times and i still dont get it! Anyone know?

Isn't it about an inept waitress at a Phoenix diner?

YAY FOR POSSIBLE MWK SHOWS! I'm going to go to all of them, no matter how many there are. I'll hitchhike if I have to...

Yay for Andy's interview with Andrew! And for the possibility of new MWK music!! And for the possibility of a few shows in December and January!!!

dcrunner17: That's not a dumb question. I have tried to find an explanation of the Vera lyrics too, with no luck.

If anyone knows the story behind the lyrics, please let us know!

Just curious if anyone has noticed or maybe this has been mentioned already....that the band hasn't played an MWK song I believe since July 22nd in MN (Make Me) and the last Til I'm Blue was Iowa July 17th. Since that time I didn't find any concert in the midwest, east coast or west coast with an MWK song.

I was at the July 24th concert at Mystic Lake and was disappointed they didn't play anything from MWK. So I looked back and it seems something was in the works around this time because Joey's last performance was July 25th. Now there is talk about a name for the David's band. Seems like it's all related somehow.

I really don't imagine that Neal and Andy are crying and broken-hearted over that update. "Unseparable" guys can laugh at that sort of thing.

Time will tell of course......

--

So it seems like Joey updated his Facebook twice.

1) Joey Clement is the new bassist for Selena Gomez and the Scene. This time there is actually a band name. I forgot what that was like..... And follow me on Twitter @clementville

2) Joey Clement is now playing with Selena Gomez and the Scene. New band, new people. New fun. And perhaps excitement.

Btw, he deleted the first one.

Not for nothing, but I don't think Neal or Andy would ever play with him again. Or let him play on MWK. Ouch.

Yeah, keep MWK separate from David and the new un-named real band. Good idea.

Eryn, I'm with you.

"If I could have a super power, I'd like the ability to...fly...so I can, you know?...soar...with...the birds."

I'm all for keeping David Cook (and Fire Tornado?!?!) separate from MWK. I know lots of people (including myself) enjoy hearing MWK covers played for the Declaration Tour, but when that happens I am constantly finding myself missing Andy's voice for the songs. MidWest Kings belongs to Neal and Andy. They were the two members who started the band and stayed through the end, and it should remain their own project.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the fact that they decided to join Dave and I hope they all stay together and make tons more music, but for me, MWK should remain Neal and Andy's.

ditto to what annie said. I like the idea of MWK remaining a separate project. Their sound is different and I like the variety. I also want an outlet in which Andy can sing lead because I love Andy's vocals. Two bands = twice the fun!!

*blushes*, Thanks Karen! I hate to say this, but it was the Joey FB thing that got me started. Its part of my master theory/pony. Yep, poor Joey is along for the ride in my delusional little fantasy! A girl can dream, right?

I don't think MWK and David's band will be one and the same... they sound different and having both allows the guys to release a greater variety of music. Besides, MWK's lead vocalist is Andy Skib. I'd obviously get excited if David had a guest spot on occassion wether one song, duet, or backup/harmony... even playing instruments, whatever makes the boys happy. That would also be brilliant cross-promotion: and MWK song f/ David Cook.
I also like hearing the occasional MWK "cover" sung by David on his shows.
Unless the guys have decided otherwise, MWK is a different project than David Cook solo artist, David Cook & Band (potentially the same as David Cook solo artist), or Andy's THH solo project.

Also, like YaminaC said, the band membership may be flexible depending on the guys' schedules. The expanded bandmember list on their myspace gave me that impression.

I'm probably just a biased Skiblet, but I like pattieann's approach. IMO, anything with the name "MWK" attached to it should have Andy as the lead singer...or at least *co* lead. Otherwise it's not MWK. Saying that Andy is already used to not singing and that he has another side project isn't sufficient justification for David taking over as the sole lead vocalist of MWK.

So yeah...while I love the idea of MWK and David and the EEB being one and the same, I think it could only work if David and Andy were co-lead singers. And I don't see that in the EEB's future. I think that David and Andy will do some duets down the road, but that's about it. Otherwise, David will be the sole lead vocalist in his band.

I'm still hoping for the band name to be an MWK reference, though.

"If I could have a super power, I'd like the ability to...fly...so I can, you know?...soar...with...the birds."

See, this is why lurking is a downer. I am always showing up late to the party knocked up and without a date Sad I hate to elaborate on anything since I am positive they have been discussed (and dissected) before. Screw it...i am jumping in, its my pony damnit!

Okay, I have thought about this and I have no real idea what I am talking about so its all wish lists and rainbows. I have decided that I would NOT split the vocals, I would leave them with Dave or shared for certain songs (ala Hunger Strike). Here is why-the band would obviously need to have Dave's name attached since Dave is the proven marketable element. (ex-"David Cook and the Midwest Kings"...eeh..). Andy is not out of the loop, though. See, he is already getting used to the idea of Dave doing vocals on the road, plus, he has his own side project with THH. As part of the newly restructured band, he is signed to a major label that might, just might, give him the chance to expand with THH. So there it is, my half-a** approach to my MWK pony. Its the best I could come up with between conference calls and my boss sneaking about!

*the lurker previously known as jmg887*

CuriousG Your MWK/Dave merge pony has been discussed (and angsted over on DWoP) before. Scott has talked about it before. (Where is Scott?) There have been other bands with more than one lead singer, like the Beatles and the Eagles. I don't know if it could happen before Dave's contract with Idol/19E is fulfilled, though. I for one would love that to happen. I am crazy about David's voice, but I also love Andy's voice and even find myself listening for the little Neal backup vox in a few songs. I think that mixing it up would be a great thing. It has also been suggested that if the band had more than one lead singer, we could get longer concerts. Wouldn't that be wonderful!

Yamina I love your "Traveling Wilburys" pony for MWK, too!

*Dances around in the glitter - smiling like a fool*

Thank you Coolshades for not thinking I'm crazy. I'm not, it's not like I've checked what plane tickets from Denmark to the US will cost me. (It's not as expensive as I thought by the way - Okay, I checked. But renting a plane for the fan invasion sounds cool! lol)

Ah crap- hadn't thought about the singing thing. Hmm... now I too am curious (pun intended). I will need to marinate on this particular pony and come up with a precise and plausible scenerio, LOL!
--
*the lurker previously known as jmg887*

See - my pony is that MWK ends up like the Traveling Wilburys - whoever is free to jam at that moment is part of the group. Loosy goosy, baby, loosy goosy.

CuriousG, I'm...uh...curious. LOL. Under your pony, if the two bands were to merge, how would you divide up lead singing duties? Would there be two lead singers?

"If I could have a super power, I'd like the ability to...fly...so I can, you know?...soar...with...the birds."

Yeah, I know my little pony/random theory has no shot in h*ll of coming to fruition, but the idea of Dave and MWK merging into one would make life happy and musically complete. Overstatement? Yes, but I cannot help it- I own my angst and share it with pride.

Okay, so I will just say for practical reasons it would give me a valid reason to merge two playlists into one on my iPod (three if you add in THH but thats another thing). Yes, I could do that anyway but I'm just sayin'... Smiling
--
*the lurker previously known as jmg887*

Hi CuriousG, I like the MWK name also, but as others have stated, that would probably not be David's band's name, and with MWK possibly getting back together for side projects when not working for Dave, it would not be practical. I just love all these guys, and whatever name or names they choose to use, I'm looking forward to lots of great new music!
