~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey everyone! I thought I'd create a discussion thread for each stop of the Declaration Tour in an effort to keep the boards organized and help everyone more easily find info related to each event (and have a record of everything in one place for anyone wanting to look back on these events sometime in future). The following is how these threads will work (subject to change):
>> Thread pinned to the top of or on the main David Cook Discussion forum for 24-48 hrs
>> Thread moved to its respective regional Tour Talk forum
If, for some reason, a thread isn't moved right away, it will be eventually.
What should be posted here? Related local radio/tv/press, on-site reports/photos, live blogging, recaps, media and fan reviews, links to related blogs, event photos/videos, etc., etc.
Please post links to photos instead of embedding them and please disable graphic footers as this will make the thread easier to read (especially when live blogging). Regarding PRE-SHOW sound check and set list spoilers, please either PM me the info so that I may post it as hidden text in the first pinned reply or, alternatively, if I am not hosting or not here for whatever reason, then please post the spoilers to a blog and link that blog back to this thread in your reply.
As always, I welcome comments/questions, as well as info, via PM. Thank you. ~Lisa
Eliwony, Just so you know TheJiman09 is a girl! I stood next to her in line and all night and we are now following each other on Twitter. She was especially good at keeping her camera resting on the barrier and just surreptitiously tilting it to capture what she wanted so she wasn't detected videoing. She was also friends with the ticklers (both guys). She also took video at Santa Fe. I'll let her know you'd like her to take more vid, but you may need to subsidize her attendance at further concerts, as I'm not sure if she has any more planned!
What did you want to know about the IHOP banter? He basically said he'd been to both IHOP and Guitar Center there and what else does one need when you have IHOP and Guitar Center? And then he said he better get an endorsement out of that - something like that!
It's show #137 or "In the Fullness of Time, It All Came to El Paso."
How do we get TheJiMan09 to shoot more video? With the beginning of Heroes, he gets a great shot of Tiemann showing off as a Guitar God, and while it's not DVD-quality video, I like his perspective on what to capture. Good crowd: although they substituted screaming for knowing the lyrics to Heroes, a good bit of sing-along came through.
Cook's handling of the Tweet sign was priceless in its economy of words. I gather it's followed by some sort of acknowledgement of the other guys, but video cuts out.
Has SA gotten harder-rocking? It certainly doesn't hurt it. One of the qualities of Cook's performances that's particularly striking is his ability to hold onto the nuanced and softer parts of the songs while going for the gusto on rocking out the harder parts. That's much more interesting than just banging along. (Whoa! Skib is rockin' out in a major way. Good to see.) The guitar solo section has a spare elegance I don't remember.
I hereby vote for Cook's telling audiences to shut the h*ll up for Lie every night. (He does it so much more tactfully than that.) Short of giving 'em milkbones, there seems to be no way to train 'em. I don't buy that the issue is the presence of newbies, as newbies shouldn't be so eager to scream either.
I'm cracking up at the tone in which Cook introduces the band, but in a good way.
Oh my -- spontaneous IDIFY sing-along? Surprising at the beginning, absolutely beautiful toward the end.
Unfortunately, the only video with the IHOP banter doesn't play clearly enough on my computer for me to get all of what's going on, though I assume IHOP has not yet added Cook to the list of rock stars who get to come up with signature pancake dishes. This BBS is a good example of how a song can be hard-rocking yet also rather pretty in parts, presumably by virtue of having a workable melody above the strong beat.
Oh, just digress. Everyone enjoys it. While LL predictably blows the roof off, what I'm liking about this show is that it isn't the big blow-the-roof-off number. For quite a while, it was the covers that were the bigger rock songs, and that has not only equalized but started shifting the other way, so that tonight's SA is arguably a harder-rocking song than LL.
Cook may want body armor after telling fans that he's ticklish.
Indeed, LO is surprisingly hard rocking. This isn't the first time it's been like that, and I do like this grungier version. I know that when the single was released, I took the "no, it's not over-produced" position in the war over that topic, and I'd still hold it sounds lovely on radio. On the other hand, the live performances have convinced me that this is the right way to do the song; it sounds continuous with what I liked on AH without being stagnant with that stage. The "sometimes I feel" verse is dead-on for a rock ballad -- got both the raw passion and the violent guitars.
Has there always been that heavy drum roll behind the HC snippet? It plays up certain dimensions of the implied meaning of that section in a big way.
Notable of the Night: LO, with IDIFY in second place
It seems like you enjoyed the show as much as I did, Jane62, and I’m glad you had such good things to say about the El Paso crowd. I am not Jiman09, who is obviously a person who can get videos loaded much quicker than me. My youtube name is pretty similar to my name here. This link should eventually be Declaration (and the Go Chiefs girl), which I think will give us the complete El Paso show.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEuta0zU450
I’m also glad you got some good info from the club owner and I’m amazed that you could get someone to actually answer the phone—I never could. I too felt really content after the show and a (completely unexpected) hometown concert seems like the perfect way to end my association with the Declaration tour—but of course I’m already thinking that maybe I should just check and see if there’s any way to get to another one and I'm annoyed that I didn't go ahead and go to tonight's Houston show. I don’t call myself crazy for nothing!
HI Purple08 - I'm one of the two people you were talking to in line from California - I think my friend was the beautiful Californian to whom you refer, LOL. We were so happy for your daughter!! I have a couple pix that are in a link I will post at the end of this post - I know I said I'd email them to you but my friend hasn't sent me your email address yet so I still will do that if you want though I don't know if it is just as good to get them off photobucket? I"m not very tech savvy so I'm not sure. I can't believe your older daughter gave him a kiss!! I saw a lipstick mark on the side of his face when I went up to talk to him after the show, but I decided not to mention it LOL - that was probably hers? It was great he read her sign too, it was funny. She is a lovely girl.
Here is the link to my photos (including the infamous boots that we are pretty sure are the ones he wore at the Cookwood taping)
Ok and here's the recap:
This was a fantastic show. Really fun, super high energy by the guys, David looked gorgeous, great banter, etc. this was really one of my favorite shows and I have been lucky enough to go to quite a few. I love the smaller venues, and even though it wasn't full, the crowd was very high-energy and enthused. I think David really liked it - as someone said earlier, he said he wanted to come back and he doesn't say that at every show! He did his line about I tell you what, if you guys promise to come, I promise to come back, and then turned to Andy and said you hear that, we're coming back to Texas or something like that and I think Andy gave him a thumbs up or something? I actually called the club owner the next day, I had talked to him after the show when he was handing out posters to those in line to meet David, he was a nice guy. I called him to see if he knew how many people were at the show because everyone I knew that was there had a different estimate and I was just curious. He said he didn't know but he thought 500 plus. I told him that the crowd loved David and David seemed to like it there, and I hoped he'd consider having David back on his next tewer. The owner said he would and that David and his band were all really nice and great with the fans. Of course I already know that, but it's nice to hear the club owner saw that too!
Jiman09 who has posted all the videos stood right next to me - lunaticinmyhead, is that you? Because I saw you said in this recap you'd been to 2 other shows including Santa Fe and I thought that was what Jiman09 had said. And Jiman09 seemed to video a lot of the show. Anyway, if it was you, thanks so much for all the videos (and sorry if anyone hears me singing or screaming or anything in them)
The Script was hard to hear well or understand. part of it was accents, but I could understand them better the night before in Phoenix. I found it hard to understand even David's banter in this venue, it was kind of echo-y or something. But yeah, couldn't understand the Script's words too well unless I already knew the song as I do for a couple. Their cover of Bowie's Heroes was awesome, done with the lead singer dancing about and wrapping himself in what I THINK was a Mexican flag that had El Paso written on it. I took video of this, and will upload tonight.
I had never seen GRO but I loved them!!! I'm so glad I got the chance. There was stuff with me winning a t-shirt & buying a CD that got stolen ... they said everyone there should start following them and write something and they'd pick a winner of a tshirt and then they later tweeted that I won! That was cool, I normally don't win things. And I bought their CD after their set, left it in my bathroom stall, had not even left the bathroom, had only washed my hands & fixed my makeup, remembered I'd left it in there, went back in stall and it was gone! I was pretty bummed. Luckily, GRO had a CD for which the plastic case was cracked so they said they couldn't sell it - they gave it to me. Yay. I really like it!
David's show was amazing - I'm sure some of you guys saw my tweets? Just super energy, they were on fire, fun banter, and he seemed in great spirits. And I love being at a club with a small but enthusiastic crowd - nothing better for a DC&TA show IMO. After the show, we heard he was meeting fans outside. By the time we heard about it (we had been inside talking to GRO, getting sigs and photos from them - so nice - and talking to a bartender we'd met earlier in the day who was really nice) we were almost last in line, weren't sure he was going to get to everyone but we were ok if he didn't get to us, we wanted others who hadn't met him before to have the chance. The venue did it in a cool way - an actual line from front to back, very orderly, nothing like the usual barricade scene, venue staff making sure people stayed in order, though it really wasn't necessary, this really was one of the best behaved GA crowds I've ever seen - in fact it may have been THE best GA crowd in terms of no pushing in the venue or anywhere, very polite and nice, etc. Anyway, they weren't allowing pictures with David when he came out to meet fans, didn't seem to even want people to take pictures of their friends while they were talking to David (though apparently my friend snapped a few anyway of me talking to him) but he was very sweet and hugging lots of people, and everyone seemed happy with their time with him. I wasn't going to ask for a signature or anything, just wanted to say hello and tell him how much I enjoyed the show. But as we were standing in line, the club owner was handing out these great posters from the show with a photo that you guys may have seen before, but my friend and I didn't believe we'd ever seen - so we took a poster each, and then decided as long as we had it, we may as well have him sign it! There is a not-so-great quality photo of the poster in my photobucket above - I took that photo through the glass doors while we waited to get in so there is a reflection - but I thought that shot was funny because right under the poster is a sign I think they permanently have up at the club about how the show might damage your hearing.
When it was my turn, I told him how fantastic the show was, and asked how come he skipped ADAM (which had been on the set list) At first i actually said "What happened to Adam" and he looked kind of confused and I realized it might have sounded like what happened to the person Adam so then I felt dumb - but I explained what I meant, and he explained it is very demanding vocally so sometimes he wants to do it but feels he just can't - and that with the dry air there and in Phoenix, his voice didn't feel up to it that night. I told him it was ok, and that I had missed hearing it but the show still felt great and very full, and he said "yeah, Neal's been doing a great job with the set lists since we've been back - well, for all two shows since we've been back!" He spontaneously gave me hugs when we met and when we parted. He spontaneously gave one to my friend's sister, too when she explained that my friend "is a huge fan and I"m her sister," he said "Hello, sister" and reached out his arms to hug her. Her sister wasn't very familiar with him but just came to be companionable and because my friend wanted her to but by the end of the night, especially after meeting him, she was raving about how great he was, how cute, etc.! We met another pair of women in line, I think one was the other's sister-in-law who lived in El Paso. The one who was the SIL had been to 3 shows with her major fan SIL and this time she said she really was won over! Great to see so many getting Cookified.
David was really so dear and got to each and every person in that line. I left feeling just very very content with the entire night. I wish for every David Cook fan the same thing some day.
I'm surprised there isn't any talk or video surfacing about his banter towards the beginning of the show. Geez! Apparently the fact that I have a lot of video on my camera does not mean I can get it off my camera to somewhere people can see it--or I can see it, for that matter. I am more grateful than ever for all of the youtube videos I've watched from every single show on the Declaration Tour, not to mention the AI tour and all the Mavid videos before it.
After hours of struggle here's Mr. Sensitive:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ke85T4PqWQY
It's possible sometime in the next month or two I may have some other videos uploaded including at least one GRO and one Script song.
(Be warned: I was not in the front, I like to take in the whole band, I'm a little zoom happy, and I can't hold the camera still. Enjoy!)
To lunaticinmyhead and purple 08!
Thanks for the great recaps! I am in deep DC withdrawal and your recaps helped ease my pain...but left me starving for at least one more DC live fix before the Declaration Tour is over in early December. I had the pleasure of seeing two great shows - Mystic Lake (Mn) and the N Club (Greensboro) - both incredible shows. Thanks for giving me a glimpse into the heart of the El Paso show. Thanks to all the fans in El Paso for helping David and the Anthemic feel the love!
How could I forget to mention he came out to sign after the show! He had changed to a t-shirt, was wearing a white baseball cap with a green shamrock. He looked adorable. There was a pretty big line and many fans with numerous things for him to sign. He was gracious and sweet. Gave hugs to anyone that asked(me included!). My daughters got in line twice. He chuckled and my cute 22 year old got to give him a kiss! He is very fit, a good height and super gorgeous.
Ok first of let I would like to thank the wonderful die-hard fans that have supported Cook at so many concerts! Laverne(screename? don't remember) and the beautiful Californian don't remember her name, and a third fan that I know I have seen in photos, but again can't recall her name at the moment. Now, what's all this "even in El Paso" comments? Hee...I mean El Paso loves Cook.
His concert was underpromoted, and I am sure this was because of the size of the venue. Only one radio station did the promotion, no billboards, and no TV! So word of mouth, and the listeners from that station still rendered a great and enthusiastic crowd.
I must say that us El Pasoans got a treat that many won't experience in a town like ours. The acoustics, and the proximity to the bands, made us the luckiest fans! I agree that the fans in El Paso were very well behaved, and very into Cook. Make no mistake! El Pasoans were there for him, and showed him lots of love. Yes, GRO, got some love, and the Script(who had issues with a muffled sound with the lead singers mike, got some love, but Mr. Cook WOW! He was showered with love. He gave us a show of a calibre that many I am sure had not experienced...and we showed him an outpour of love with screams and cheers that I must say pleasantly surprised Cook and the Anthemic. He gave us many crooked smirks! and of course witty banter.
My daughter was lucky enough to get called up on stage by Cook, after shedding tears over not meeting him after two concerts; she got to be the luckiest 7th grader in EP! She will never forget him and was amazed at his huge hands and color changing eyes. "Mom his eyes went from emerald green, then to gray, then blue! OMG! He is beautiful!"
I am rambling I know. Cook does that. He is possess an undeniable talent, and beautiful soul. He is very sexy, and charismatic...but I know you all already know that.
Thank you Pweller for finding this vid. I so wanted to go to this concert. I used to live in El Paso for a very long time and it is near to my heart. In my mind I planned an escape to go to this concert. Sometimes it sucks being me. ha ha. But thanks Pweller really! Ya made my day!
Thanks for your recap, luna. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to any videos you wish to grace us with.
I honestly thinks David does like to play at clubs like that (even in El Paso, j/k). I think he enjoys smaller clubs. You can't beat the vibe. I hope and think that even if he gets huger than huge, that he'll always sprinkle in some intimate venues (even if he has to do it incognito).
Thanks for the great recap. Where are all the videos????
Of all the nights I couldn't stay up late enough to hear the cellcast and now no vids...sad face
Capt Cha has stopped me at least a half dozen times this week and I have been on DCO since day one last Sept and never had this happen before this week. What is up with that??
By the way, I don't do links cause I don't know how so I know that isn't the problem.
"When your smile becomes the reason I breathe"
(I should probably make this a blog post but I don’t really know how and it’s a pretty sad empty thread anyway.) It was an amazing show. I have a memory like Swiss cheese and I’m not particularly observant in the first place, so I have limited details to report and I can’t really compare this show to the previous two I’ve seen, but the band was certainly on fire and David was in fine form as usual. I had previously only seen Ryan Star as an opening act and if I had been able to choose, I would have asked for Crash Kings or Need to Breathe, so I was interested to see how everyone responded to GRO and the Script.
There seemed to be a lot of excitement in the room for the Script—in fact, it sometimes seemed greater than the excitement about DC. GRO worked really hard to get everyone involved—had us sing the Goodbye LA song, etc.—but of course it was hard to go first. I did recognize several of the songs and they said our radio station is actually playing their single. (They were selling their CD outside the door as people left the show a la Ryan Star and it seemed like lots of people were buying it.)
The Script, though, was a whole other level. They started their part of the show with a super cool blue light show (Thanks, Terry!) and drum solo. The lead singer is really engaging and the guitar player had lots to say as well (hope Neal is watching). The crowd seemed really into it although not dancing and jumping around like the singer guy wanted. In a great pandering to the audience move, they held up an Irish flag (which of course looks pretty similar to a Mexican flag) which had El Paso written on it. Both opening acts mentioned things like follow us on twitter/facebook and tell your radio station to play our single.
So as I mentioned, the crowd seemed really excited for The Script and I made up this whole story in my head about how people from Mexico paid more attention to what goes on in Europe and so there was probably an international contingent there primarily to see the Script and the crowd may not be so into David Cook. Of course, I was completely wrong. If the Script was up a level from GRO, DC & TA raised it another 10 notches. DC had the crowd from the 1st note and never let go. He talked about being happy to be back in Texas, he talked about his history with the guys and playing some little club in Odessa as an opening act (which of course made me crazy—why didn’t I know about that 2 years before I’d ever heard of David Cook?!), he brought a girl up on stage and gave her a hug and a t-shirt because she said “Go Chiefs!” (and then she asked for a t-shirt for her friend also), he talked about getting tickled when he leaned into the crowd, and he said something about liking the venue and coming back (I didn’t really believe him, but I have a recording of it, so he’s stuck now).
The a cappella part in Lie worked really well—no shushing that I could hear—and was absolutely beautiful (interesting to see the other responses to this). I was hoping for IDIFY so I could see the new ending and it was as amazing as I expected. There were some really nice Neal moments in Light On. I got ADAM in Santa Fe so I was OK with this show ending with CBTM and, as I mentioned on twitter, it seemed to be a big hit with the crowd—everyone sang along. And I have to say, I really loved it too; DC did some interesting things with some of the sustained notes and it seemed like a pretty big finish.
I recorded most of the show--the battery died right before the Hotel CA part of KOTN which made me really sad. It's a new camera so have no idea how it will turn out, but I'll try to put up some videos late this afternoon.
Many thanks to LMP for cellcasting and to Mandy for hosting!!
I want to see a video of THIS: @Cookistas RT @LaverneTX David stood and let the crowd touch him and two guys in front tickled his stomach.
