WILL BE POSTED IN THE FIRST PINNED REPLY TO THIS THREAD

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey everyone! I thought I'd create a discussion thread for each stop of the Declaration Tour in an effort to keep the boards organized and help everyone more easily find info related to each event (and have a record of everything in one place for anyone wanting to look back on these events sometime in future). The following is how these threads will work (subject to change):
>> Thread pinned to the top of or on the main David Cook Discussion forum for 24-48 hrs
>> Thread moved to its respective regional Tour Talk forum
If, for some reason, a thread isn't moved right away, it will be eventually.
What should be posted here? Related local radio/tv/press, on-site reports/photos, live blogging, recaps, media and fan reviews, links to related blogs, event photos/videos, etc., etc.
Please post links to photos instead of embedding them and please disable graphic footers as this will make the thread easier to read (especially when live blogging). Regarding PRE-SHOW sound check and set list spoilers, please either PM me the info so that I may post it as hidden text in the first pinned reply or, alternatively, if I am not hosting or not here for whatever reason, then please post the spoilers to a blog and link that blog back to this thread in your reply.
As always, I welcome comments/questions, as well as info, via PM. Thank you. ~Lisa
Atlantic City, Union, Bloomsburg, Houston, Dallas*
I just finished ALL of my photos from Houston, I added a whole bunch to the photobucket album linked above. I added like 60 photos that i edited, go check them out.
I also realize that I never recapped the whole ice cream truck experience....
So we were standing out by the buses waiting for everyone to come out. Kyle & Andy came and went with everyone just standing around waiting for Dave as per normal. Then we hear the music from an ice cream truck. WTH - what is there an ice cream truck in downtown Houston at midnight? So random. We joked that we should tweet Neal about it. Then we see Kyle getting off the bus and heading over to get some ice cream. When I noticed that he was signing for folks, I wandered over there and stood back while he ate. Then was yelling and i looked up and saw Neal and Dave come out of the building, i turned my head back towards kyle and then more screaming as I turn again and see Neal literally running around the bus to get to the ice cream man. It was priceless to see a grown man so damn excited about ice cream. So then I yell back to my friend at the bus to get over here and she is like "but Dave..." and I may or may not have yelled "who the %$&* cares about Dave, Neal is at the freaking ice cream truck". I will never admit that i may or may not have blown off Dave for Neal & ice cream.
Neal ate his powerpuff ice cream and we got the chance to chat it up with Kyle for a little bit. We talked about NYE & how he became and Angels fan. At some point I remember Andy showing up but it was just to laugh at Neal and he got back on the bus. Got to Neal after the crowd had thined about a bit and also got him to talk to a friend back in Philadelphia who could not make the trip. He said hello this is Andy Skib. Then the whole group of us left called him a liar. He was sweet to talk to her on the phone.
Both Neal & Kyle signed my DCTR cover, which I now have all 6 band members on there.
I am still in a bit of disbelief that it all really happened. I mean really where did that truck come from?
Anyway the night made the Texas trip totally worth it, not that i ever doubted it. The whole weekend was amazing and I can't wait to NYE in SoCal!
CookifiedTexas, Thanks soooooo much! She will be so excited to watch this. Each video I watch reminds me how LOUD the audience was. It's hard to believe the place wasn't sold out!
Alright, well that's all my goodies. If anyone's friends with me on Facebook, you can view my albums of this show that have only the *good* pictures so you don't have to wade thru the blurry ones. If you want to befriend me, just tell me in the message that you're from DCO. My profile pic is my group picture with David and the guys from the Houston Meet n Greet- we're all wearing black- so it should be easy to figure out which Jamie from Texas I am. LoL.
I'll get it up ASAP! It will be called "Sign Banter and The Hulk Hand Makes an Appearance". Sound good? Sorry about the confusion, but I do indeed have it for you to commemorate the night. Smiling
luvDCmusic, I captured the banter about your daughter's sign. Do you remember which song it preceded? Mine are all uploading right now, so keep an eye out on my youtube account (CookifiedTexan).
CookifiedTexas - I saw that you got the banter about the dry erase board, but our sign was inviting Neal to my daughter's 21st birthday. I didn't see that anywhere. I checked your account and am assuming you have uploaded everything. Do you remember the birthday sign? I think we were so excited when he read it that neither of us remember what song it was! I know it was after the dry erase board banter which was Straight Ahead and somewhere before Declaration.
My head cold has now become a full body sickness. Must return to bed. I'll keep checking.
lil sparrow quoth:
It's good for him to pair up with another successful band, but only because they are popular in their own right, not because his music isn't good enough to get people to come.
It's not a question of goodness-of-music so much as what non-fans expect of Cook and the band.
In the ordinary course of events, I listen to my (incredibly lousy) local modern rock station, which plays The Script, and not to my local contemporary hit radio station, which keeps Cook in heavy rotation. Had I not seen Cook on Idol, I'd assume he was another manufactured pop sensation like Leona Lewis and would not pay to see him perform. That doesn't mean CHR is bad music or that musicians in that genre are bad performers -- I do hear songs that I like or find amusing, and some of these people are reputed to put on fabulous shows -- but that when someone says CHR to me, I start with expectations about whether I'll like it or not.
As it happens, Cook's shows violate just about all of my expectations about an artist who's played only on CHR. That means there's value to pairing him with openers that appeal to the kind of listeners who would reject a CHR artist but who will give him a chance if he's associated with an act more to their tastes. If the idea is to see that he has the fanbase needed for a long-term career -- as I'm sure everyone here wants -- then enticing a non-CHR-friendly audience is a good call. So The Script do, in that way, do Cook and the band a favor -- not by being better but by being a useful reference point.
He seemed to really like The Script and said they did David a favor. Shrug. The Script definitely have a more accessible sound. They have that fusion sound of pop/rock/R&B. It's good that the boys have a great opening act.
Anyone's free to have differing opinions but I don't think David needs The Script around to get people to come see him because his music isn't accessible enough. It's good for him to pair up with another successful band, but only because they are popular in their own right, not because his music isn't good enough to get people to come. If someone comes there and isn't satisfied, well, everyone has different tastes and that's OK. But I don't think David needs The Script because his music isn't good enough on its own. He only needs them in the sense that fans of both bands can bring more people together.
Hmm that Bar-ba-sol listed in the OP is actually a different song from a different show. LOL
My fav of the night shows just how hard he sang. Truly amazing!!
Byrd, that is truly awesome. It's exactly how I will remember this show.
My twitter
It's show #139 or "Bigger, Louder, Faster, More."
This one's probably going to run light on commentary because I'm trying to view three shows in one day, and while Cook packs a lot of nuance and originality into every performance, songs seem to be running a tad more consistent than they have in other legs of the tour. That's an observation, not a complaint; I have no opinion on whether more or less variation is better. I do end up with a greater appreciation of the band's ability to hit an effective blend of "more or less the same, yet different."
Very interesting pacing on the beginning of IDIFY; it's usually more lyrical, and this one invites metaphors I'd rather not use here. This is one where it's surprisingly easy to make the beat turn it into a less innocent-sounding song than it is on the record.
Lie is confirming my puzzlement at hearing this was a uniformly hard-rocking show. The set list did not support that conclusion, and in fact Lie is its usual lyrical self. I'm one who thinks shows need shifts in mood, so I'm just as pleased by a let-up, much as I like the "harder" sound of the songs that precede it. Perhaps it faded into the general impression because it has so much dramatic build to it at the end.
Audience sings along with Breathe Tonight? Now that impresses me for audience training. Alas, it's drowning out Cook's vocals on this video, which is a pity. Oh no -- he's audible on the second verse, and it's the most raw and stunning part. This song is usually one of the better examples of how it's possible to have a harder rock song that pulls in softer emotions as well, and this performance is no exception; the tension on the third verse is so well done.
Now H4T is sheer loud in a good way. Again, though, the cover is no longer more blow-the-roof-off than the original songs. I'm reminded that there was a time in the early 1990s when every alternative band had to have a couple ironic covers to show off what their style would sound like if applied to hits of the past. This is a little subgenre that I like a lot, and when the song fits right into the overall sound, it's a really fun demonstration of what else a band can do.
Yup, that's parents for you. Remind you of the obvious. If that didn't happen, I'm glad Cook made it up.
Getting into Declaration, I'm not sure it's accurate to say this show was harder-rocking or louder so much as more intense. That opening verse had a build and forcefulness to it that again, isn't a sweet, innocent proclamation of loyalties but something darker, more grown-up, and more bowl-'em-into-complete-surrender.
Notable of the Night: Declaration, because it was one of those surprising experiences that justifies listening to it for the umpteenth time.
I enjoyed meeting several DCO friends yesterday! *waves to Byrd* I really feel Iike I owe it to all my DCO friends to do a proper recap, but our main computer is down and today is my son's 13th birthday and we gave him a new itouch. That means he won't have a happy birthday unless I give him my laptop! I'll try to do a proper recap later, but for now...
My 16 year old daughter went to the show with me and we were up close and had the best time! She had a sign saying, "Neal, come back and celebrate my 21st birthday in February (2014)!" And Dave read it!! I thought she was gonna 'plode! If anyone sees a video with this please, please, please PM me! I so hope to find someone out there that captured the moment for us!
Epic failure on my part to video. I brought my son's video recorder but didn't get any instructions from him. Thought it would be easy, turn on, zoom in, zoom out. How different could it be than my old big video camera? Well, I recorded Lie but the screen was white with an occasional shadow of Dave and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. Found out this morning that the camera was set in negative mode and the push of a button would have switched it to regular mode! So sorry to all of you (and myself)!
I will try to write a proper recap tomorrow. Crossing fingers that a video shows up of our sign banter!
