OCT-03-09 (Sat) RITUAL NIGHTCLUB (Ottawa, ON) -- twitter rpts, live blogging, recaps, photos, vids, reviews, etc.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WILL BE POSTED IN THE FIRST PINNED REPLY TO THIS THREAD
Hey everyone! I thought I'd create a discussion thread for each stop of the Declaration Tour in an effort to keep the boards organized and help everyone more easily find info related to each event (and have a record of everything in one place for anyone wanting to look back on these events sometime in future). The following is how these threads will work (subject to change):
>> Thread pinned to the top of or on the main David Cook Discussion forum for 24-48 hrs
>> Thread moved to its respective regional Tour Talk forum
If, for some reason, a thread isn't moved right away, it will be eventually.
What should be posted here? Related local radio/tv/press, on-site reports/photos, live blogging, recaps, media and fan reviews, links to related blogs, event photos/videos, etc., etc.
Please post links to photos instead of embedding them and please disable graphic footers as this will make the thread easier to read (especially when live blogging). Regarding PRE-SHOW sound check and set list spoilers, please either PM me the info so that I may post it as hidden text in the first pinned reply or, alternatively, if I am not hosting or not here for whatever reason, then please post the spoilers to a blog and link that blog back to this thread in your reply.
As always, I welcome comments/questions, as well as info, via PM. Thank you. ~Lisa
if anyone wants to hear more Male Nurse, he will be playing at the raw sugar cafe (692 somerset street west, ottawa) on october 14th at 8:00pm with the calgary band Friendo - free show!!
here's a pretty odd interview with the guy:
http://communities.canada.com/ottawacitizen/blogs/sceneunseen/archive/20...
Wow! that show was so unreal!! so raw and i was lucky enough to be in front of David throughout the whole show! ( and i didn't have to stand in line the whole day to get that spot!). but it was so intimate, such a special show with LOAP that I cried once I got home after leaving my cookie friends ( Renee, Becky, Karen and Debbie). I still can't believe it. It was the best weekend of my life with two shows back-to-back, the boys walking near us almost all day in Ottawa was so unreal ( David walked by me and i was so intimidated!). Got a pic with Neal ( thanx Becky so much!!) and at the end of the show, picked up Andy and Neal's pics on the floor!!
My photobucket... it has all my pics and my videos of the show. Sorry no time for pretty link. http://s744.photobucket.com/albums/xx85/FanofDavid/Ritual%20Ottawa%20Oct...
Eilowny: no need to fixate on the opening act; not really worth it and I don't mean any disrespect to the artist. himself. You just had to be there to get why it was not that great.... and I know you weren't but read my recap Part 2 (in my profile page) for full details on him.
However, I must point out, we did show him a lot of respect and love; more so than he would have got if opening for another act I'm sure. He was just out of his depth that's all... We all joked that he'd probably never played to even half this size of a crowd before. I think he was intimidated by the "American Idol" thing perhaps. He was like a lamb to the slaughter, just we were all too kind hearted to do any slaughtering...
David can't control fans' expectations... no-one said it was a "surprise guest" just a local artist. If the fans online read into that too much we certainly didn't. Sure we talked about Phil Marshall, Raine etc but really not expecting any of that... again, we were more focused on the fact that we were about to see David...so everything else pales in comparison.
I think it was just one of those things... first it was to be the Script, then Ryan and for whatever reasons they pulled out.. It was new night club so perhaps they just called around to see if someone was free. I really don't think David was involved in any of the details.. just perhaps told the club to find someone...or they told him they knew people... It was interesting that David never actually mentioned him ... he usually at least mentions the opener...I'm sure David didn't even hear him sing.
Quite honestly David could have chosen not to have an opener (in this case) (and perhaps should have) and it would not have made any difference. We were all so stoked that we were seeing David in Canada that we would have patiently waited until 8 pm for him to come on.
I think it's just one of those minor glitches that happen with a live show... the club did the best they could..we didn't really care how good or bad he was.. it was David we were there to see... chalk it up to experience and move on...
Great Canadian David Thread
With just a kiss on the neck
MP3 Links are on, check it out!
I was at both shows - amazing seeing David and the Anthemic back to back and in such different venues.....stood about 5-6 deep back in Montreal to the left of Dave....awesome to see him up close, seeing the expressions and technique from all.....sat at the bar for Ottawa half way back, - could not stand 2 nights in a row - too old for that...
The electricity in both venues was amazing and he/they were well loved at both venues. Interesting, we Canadians must not be familiar with Alice in Chains because the crowd certainly did not get into this some the way they do in the USA. Since I watch all the videos the day after the shows, I am familiar with it and sang it and got into it both nights....It is one of my faves, especially if done acoustically - which it was both nights - Neil's guitar playing on this song is awesome. I absolutely appreciated the acoustic music - so rich and vibrant.
Living On a Prayer was outstanding in Ottawa, everyone singing along, not just in the chorus. Dave was smart to change it up because again, he recognized a lot of people the night before must not have been too familiar with Avalance - while done beautifully in Montreal it did not get the reaction it should have...so when in doubt I guess go for something familiar, but special...and special it was - goosebump time.
Lie was amazing in the small Ottawa venue, until the phone rang and at least we all laughed including Dave. It was trance like....
I sent flowers into the bus after the show with one of the security fellows (thanks to the security guy) thanking David for his music and because his music lets me escape the pain of losing my 23 yr old son....I just wanted to give him a thank you somehow....
As luck would have it, David happened to open up the window at the back of the bus as I was walking back to my car in the parking lot, I was able to shake his hand and thank him personally - he thanked me for the flowers - pink verregated lilies that smelt heavenly. I do not know if he got the card that was inside the flowers, but I hope so.
My suggestion to those planning to see Mr. David Cook and the Anthemic in Windsor or Rama - go big or go home - go to both....2 shows over 3 nights - prices good - you can't go wrong....
just hope the November weather Gods are nice and spare the roads - hell of a drive from Windsor to Indiana and then back track all the way to Rama back to back to back.....
Safe travelling everyone.
I'm still fixated on lack of fan love for the opener, to the point of having gone through most of the guy's Myspace Music page and concluded that he's kind of interesting in the studio. He's found local reviewers to like him.
It's too bad DC hasn't volunteered how that opener got picked. He's talked about coming up with his own on occasion, and while this one doesn't fit what he tells the public about his tastes, I kinda wonder if fans were unwelcoming toward something he thought was at least an acceptable idea.
It's show #127 or "Doin' What We Ottawa" or "Gettin' into the Poutine."
Apologies to videographers whose sound I have trouble with -- yes, I do appreciate getting to see/hear the performance at all!
Heroes: The one video has great visuals and blurry sound (hey, I don't know how to control sound in a tiny and crowded night club, and that place is so small that Andy and Monty appear to be participating in a highly musical three-legged race). And it would be one of the straightforwardly toe-curling versions. This is completely different from the prior night, so whether I called last night's style correctly or not, DC was trying to do something different with the larger venue. Or the different phase of the moon. Or whatever.
Mr. S: What was going on with that second verse? The choruses are condensed rage, as was the third, but the second verse was more reminiscent of last night's Declaration.
There's no challenge to throwing picks in this venue. None. Unless maybe to hit the disco ball. Even Monty can hit the disco ball.
Wadding up national flags? Not couth.
WOHWWS: Ooh, two nights of the clapping! And this audience really got into it. (Back to blurry sound -- I'm going to skip the remainder of this one because I'm just not getting enough to have anything to say.)
Lie: Is it time to start a betting pool on when DC will just overtly shush the audience? It's always cute. Yeah, I'm still hearing more aggressive percussion than usual. Quieted 'em a little too far, eh?
LOAP: The elegant wistfulness sold me on it over serious reservations about halfway through the first verse, and DC's solution to how to handle the usually-fast parts is more coherent and does a better job of taking the mood somewhere novel than what he did with Avalanche. That was "what the hell, we'll try it acoustic." This was a distinct interpretation that stands on its own. The substitution was a good call.
Generic radio host, I think. DC's mangling of "have had invited" -- which I think is grammatically correct -- destroyed my brain.
MITB: Further out there on raw anguish than last night's, but not as eerie. Still very cool, though not the revelation of Montreal.
LOTM: Such lovely vindication for my suspicion that the prior night's LOTM hadn't quite satisfied DC. Second verse is so absolutely beautiful, edge and all. Third verse and its following chorus may be the best handling of that segment that I can recall. Again, this is now an acoustic number that stands on its own.
(And that means the acoustic section made its move from "clever strategy, nicely done" to "good music on its own merits.")
IDIFY: Seductive verse 2, followed by angry chorus... so much for always sounding roughly the same. This turned into one of the more nuanced performances of this song... Is there an odd sound effect at the end, or is that the video?
They're Canadian. They're MILD.
IJDIYAT: Back to blurry sound -- it's sounding like the better-tension version that appeared recently, but hard to tell. Another one I'm giving up on because I can't hear enough detail.
Decl: Along the lines of last night's... why is this so hot?
TWIK: Makes me feel like I was being tactful about last night's. I wrote that after the first verse. The second verse was better. One Perfect Moment.
The logic behind liking poutine is seriously flawed, unless DC also puts gravy on ice cream.
LO: Less of a sense of running stoplights, more of a sense of banging on things. I'd swear I went for the one video not labeled "partial" and it is. Alas.
Techies are shy forest creatures who will make your life miserable if not treated properly. Burbling! Would you buy a used car from this man?
CBTM: Blurry sound and crowd sing-along...
Notable of the Night: a much tougher call than Montreal, as the show as a whole was stronger (and that's despite my griping about variations in video sound quality). I'm going for LOTM, although I'll be pelted with tomatoes for not choosing LOAP. But I'm generally uncomfortable picking the rarities for Notable.
cookfantoo quoth:
Didn't say much about the opening act - Not terrible but somewhat "out of his depth". 'nuff said.
It's too bad no one associated with the venue or with DC&TA thought to Tweet that the opener was a real local act, not a front for one of the desired fan surprises, as that would have managed audience expectations somewhat. Not that this would have fixed a real mismatch in style or performance ability, but you gotta wonder how DC would have felt if he'd been the "surprise" opener for an audience expecting, oh, a surprise Springsteen appearance, back in the days when his performances were less polished.
Score! Acoustic LOTM sounds dramatically different -- in the direction of developing its own identity as an acoustic piece -- the second night in Ottawa. After predicting this from the Montreal video, I re-ran the specific sections that had troubled me for a direct comparison, and sure enough, DC had settled on a more effective handling.
I do not think it's possible to have the emotional energy to watch two shows in a row with almost identical set lists, so I'll go with Bad Haiku for the nonce and do Ottawa tomorrow night.
I wasn't at the Ottawa concert but my friend Jane aka cakelulu on Twitter was and she made me hear the whole concert via her cellphone which was amazing! Plus she caught one of David's guitar picks for me - she's so sweet and gracious and amazing! I can never thank her enough and I swear, even while sitting on my couch and grinning from ear to ear, David Cook and that voice of his seriously gives you goosebumps. He's so amazing and after the show when he was at the buses, Jane called me up and had a little surprise for me; she got David on the phone and I spoke to him for 30 seconds which was pretty darn amazing. He's so sweet and very funny and he just loves Michael Johns to bits. He was telling me to tell Michael the next time I chat with him that he oughta stop saying mean things about him and that he says hi, lol. It was so funny and totally cute. He even aww'd at me when I told him I couldn't make it and said, "aw, it's all good".
Also, I want to thank SeriouslyTiny over at Twitter for taking this shot and Christa here at DCO for this shot
