Paula Abdul not coming back to "Idol"
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090805/ap_on_en_mu/us_tv_american_idol_abdul
With Kara staying, Paula leaving, and Season 8 not being near as good as Season 7, (OK, we might all be a little biased ...) dare I say that Idol may have "jumped the shark."
Discuss, discuss.

As a new fan of another reality show, So You Think You Can Dance, I've now had the opportunity to observe a judging panel with no Simon, and I have to say, it is very refreshing. It obviously proves to me this type of show can live without him. Of course, AI will be able to live without Paula, too, but I'd take Paula over Kara and Ellen combined any day of the week.
I read recently that Simon is worth 75 million dollars. For chrissake's, how much money does one person really need?
I will miss Paula...however Ellen will be fun to watch. I am sure they will all click well together.
I for one will be watching to see how many times Simon is speechless whenever Ellen will talk. hahaha
Looks like Ryan has a side-kick partner to kick back verbal fun attacks to Simon. LOL
Ellen is a good hearted person. We all need to give her a chance. Paula made her choice to leave the show... and found another cloud to play in...so we need to allow Paula to change in her life as well.
I am sure Paula will be a good asset to her new gig. Besides...AI is really all about Simon and Ryan
anyway.

Fox made a mistake replacing Paula with Ellen who (imo) is not qualified, certainly not anywhere near Paula's qualifications. Paula made the show more fun. I think she deserved more money, and I don't blame her for holding out, but I DO blame Idol for being ignorant. I will probably still watch the show to see what happens, but it won't be the same. Although I know the show wouldn't be right without Simon, it will have lost its heart without Paula.

paula is out and ellen is in. paula is just a comfort for losers who get bashed by simon. contestants these season 9 are no longer expected to be regular guys. most of them got a band and knows what to do. they don't need comfort from paula. they deserve the beating and the four guys: kara-randy-ellen-simon will weed the weak and give us the best Idol ever!

I will miss Paula...however she was offered money. She turned it down because her other partners were getting more of an offer. Simon deserves the big hike since he has to commute from overseas and Ryan deserves his offer since he is a wonderful host he deserves it. I am not a Kara lover...but she is "ok".
Randy is ok too. I think Simon is very honest and that show folds without Simon.
And Ryan is a cute as a button and is a perfect host for the show. Gotta love the Ryan Seacrest. lol
I never thought the show needed 4 judges anyway...the 3 of them handled it fine without the 4th judge.
But, hey they never ask my opinion. LOL
Marian
Perfect way to say it, Dee - If Simon is the brains of the show, Paula was the heart. What's a show without heart?
The show will not be the same. Every single one of them had different personalities. Simon is the brutally honest one, Randy is.... Randy, and Paula was (like what martha said) the ditzy one. I'm not really a fan of Kara. I guess we'll see how everything goes this season!

Excellent Post, Squirrellygirl.
So true. Idol will never be the same without Paula. She was the heart of the group. Some of the contestants have said she brought much warmth and she made them feel safe.

I think they disrespected Paula with their small offer in comparison to Simon's and Ryan's offers. A lot of the show centered around her comments, and Simon attacking Paula by trying to mess with her straps on her dress, and drawing on her face, etc. etc. etc. Paula had the most intriguing, interesting, constructive criticism regarding what contestants could actually do to increase their chances of success. Although I love to hear the other judges' comments, Paula's were always the most useful, imo. Yes, she talked in colors, and don't forget, she is an actual artist who can do it all: act, dance, sing, choreograph, etc. I don't think Idol will be the same show, no matter what big stars they find to sit in on the judge panel. Paula will always leave an undeniable hole on the show. It was a small price for Fox to pay for continued success, and they threw it away.

Haha, good point, smiley59. Carrie Underwood is pretty popular in the country genre, but David would ultimately triumph.

Yes....if they have a show called Ultimate Idol....I am positive David Cook would win.
That would be sooooo amazing.
Marian
I like that - Ultimate Idol... Great idea! Of course, no one has the rabid fans that David does, so no one else has a chance of winning...
I think you're right... definitely jumped the shark.
I really don't think we're biased in saying that Season 7 was A LOT better than Season 8... the contstants were more interesting, and it felt like you knew them a lot better. Plus, in my humble opinion, they were better singers. Both Davids, Carly, Syesha and Michael were all insanely insanely amazing. I don't think anybody in Season 8 really rivaled any of them,e xcept maybe Alyson and Adam.
Now, back to Paula... Unlike most people, I really like Kara a lot, mainly because I almost always agreed with her. Her opinion alwyas seemed professional, and I trusted her judgement. I have always found Paula's presence to be annoying, and in my opinion she had no idea what she was talking about half of the time. NO OFFENSE, this is just one person's opinion.
Still, I must admit that Paula was a crucial part of the show and will be dearly missed. As ditzy as she is, I still have to love her, and I'm sure the contestants will miss her. Paula was always nice, and sometimes she was all they had.
The dynamic of good-cop/bad-cop/neutral-cop that Simon, Randy and Paula had will surely be missed.
Honestly, I truly believe that if this isn't the last season of AI, Season 10 will be.
I think that at some point they should have an Ultimate Idol competition, with the top two from all of the previous seasons... well, that was off topic!

The show will be kind of strange not seeing Paula on there. Kara should have been the one to leave....
not Paula. But, hey they didn't ask my advice...so ...that is what you get... LOL
Anyway, the show is all about Simon anyway...we all really know that. That is why Simon is always offered
the money first. Cause if Simon walks...the show tanks then. hahahaha
Gotta love the Simon. He does rock...
Simon is the guy you love to hate. But, got to see the following week to see who else he chews up.
Paula will be miss a lot from the show. I think Kara will be getting a hate mail even though it isn't even her fault. To be honest...American Idol never needed a 4th judge...I mean the 3 of them were handling it fine.
Why on earth did AI need to add Kara? They should go back to just Randy, Paula, Simon and only
Ryan Seacrest....Ryan is a cutie as well. Ryan is like a cuddle bunny of the show ....hahahaha
I love it when Ryan and Simon duke it out...it is so funny to watch those two jokers going at it. LOL
My husband and I just laugh at Ryan and Simon dogging each other. LOL It is like too oversize boys
seeing who can out dog who.
Marian
P.S.
Paula, I wish you all the happiness in your next job. American Idol will miss you girlfriend!!!
I love paula I will miss her

I'm very sad to hear Paula will no longer be on AI. It will never be the same without her. She loved David from the very begininng . She knew he had immense talent and he was going to be a huge star. Paula brought class and compassion to the show. No offense against Kara, but the group dynamic and the excitement of Idol will be lost without Paula. I wish her well. She is very talented in her own right and I've always liked and respected her.

Happiness does not come from what you have but from what you are....
It makes me want to cry. I love Paula. She will be SORELY missed!

Hmm - Idol with Kara and potentially no Paula might be the nail in the coffin for Idol for me, sad to say... I didn't feel that Kara improved the quality of the show last year, so I didn't enjoy season 8 as much as prior seasons. Paula' personality is integral to the dynamics, so with her gone, I just can't see it being as enjoyable.
Of course, the other problem is that no upcoming Idol seaon will ever be as good as season 7, because how do you top the season of DC? Can't be done!
Even though Paula was so ditzy at times you wondered what she was on, she was still an integral part of the show. Idol was fine before Season 8 and I think they should have left well enough alone. That being said, I wish Kara the best and we'll see how Season 9 turns out!
