The Ryan Star thread

The Ryan Star thread

If there already is a Ryan Star thread buried some where, we can resurrect it. I couldn't find one that's active.

This man and his band have grown on me to the point where I now consider David, Andy Skib and Ryan to be "the trinity" for me. I emerged as a huge fan of Ryan's over the summer when he played a bunch of acoustic shows here in Southern California. Then I saw him and his band open for Collective Soul this past week and saw how tight the whole band has become since I saw them open for David at the Borgata (Atlantic City) in March. Then came last night's show.

Ryan's show last night in Ventura was one of the most thrilling evenings. I just cannot believe this week. David, Crash Kings and Ryan in Hollywood (favorite concert of my life), then mega-concert of DCATA in San Diego, and then Ryan and his band in the best listening room/dinner club in Southern California, playing to 40 or so diehard fans of his. Semi-unplugged (mix of acoustic, and full band but not amped all the way up, although they blew the roof off that tiny place). I'm exhausted and exhilarated. For me, David, Andy & Ryan have become the trinity.
Anyone interested in checking out last night's set, go to John_socal's youtube page:

http://youtube.com/jsalow2

John's still loading 'em up. Lots already there, including tons of Ryan's performances from the Declaration Tour, and those acoustic sets in LA that I mentioned before. Ryan played for close to 90 minutes last night. It was a show that had us going... cheering, laughing, crying, singing... very much as David's shows do. This is NOT a competition. I will never leave one of these guys to support the other. I support both. David has changed my life in more ways than I can tell you. Ryan is at a stage in his career where he needs as much help from us as he can get. I love both of these dudes, and their band mates. We are so blessed to have them making beautiful music for us.

I now understand the instant bond that not only David and Ryan made, but the bond that both bands made with each other. It couldn't have played out any other way. Greater guys you will not find... all 10 of them in both bands.

If you want to support Ryan, make requests for "Breathe" to your local HAC station. It's going for impact on that format, and several stations have added it.

In LA, text requests to KBIG (MyFM) at 31043. Or use the mediabase request form on line, and write it in. Once a day for a text, once a day for mediabase. Don't spam the stations, and follow the guidelines in the "request thread" here on DCO.

Finally, getting personal, here are my favorite songs:

It was "We Might Fall" all throughout the spring and summer, with "Last Train Home" a very close second. The past week "Right Now" has emerged as my absolute favorite, and when Ryan performs it live, it's off the scales. "Last Train Home" and "We Might Fall" are tied for 2nd/3rd place. Every track on the EP not only could huge radio hits, but SHOULD be huge radio hits.

Love seeing Ryan having his own thread. Well deserved. He is one of my favorite entertainers.

Breathe4jobs mentioned in the NY Daily News ... http://bit.ly/1Ww1qU (great photo of Ryan in front of the NYSE).

Atlantic Records is finally spending some bucks and pushing harder for Ryan and 11:59, starting with the Breathe video and breathe4jobs, which got a ton of great press. I think the label was pleasantly surprised. It not only got onto CNN, but Billboard, the NY Daily News, and of course the fans trended it on twitter. Atlantic tweeted gleefully about all of this. I now see Breathe listed as a song to play on All Access, and I saw an ad for Breathe on All Access as well. Ryan told me last week that they plan to release 11:59 after the New Year.. maybe toward the end of Jan when sales start to rebound. The label wants to make sure it sells, and wanted Ryan to tour more and build his fan base. Tweets from fans today show Breathe is being played in stores (on Satellite services, no doubt) and even Ryan himself was excited to hear it on the radio in Huntsville, Alabama yesterday. So my fingers are crossed that this record will be released, and if not Breathe, the next single might make it onto radio, to at least chart a little. Since NYC is Ryan's home town, NYC metro people should be requesting Breathe on WPLJ and on NJ's WPST. Isn't there also a Long Island HAC station?

Here's the recap of Ryan's at Cipriani's on Wednesday, and a couple of vids..

Ryan was pretty awesome yesterday, he did 3 songs at the luncheon. I knew that I was probably one of the few in the fandom there, so I decided it was my duty to video all 3 songs. Apologize for the waiters cutting in front, we had assigned tables and mine was in the back - 4 tables back, center - so I had a good view actually except for the waiters. (how lucky that Rhoda and I got our tickets separately yet we were assigned to the same table!)

Rhoda and I actually spoke to one of the guys in the Breathe video during the mingling stuff before we sat down, apparently Ryan was out at that point and we missed him. I forgot the guy's name (sorry) but he does do work for Ryan managing his facebook and he said that he has gotten some requests for his resume based on the video. Keep up the awesome work, Ry!!!

As we were about to sit, Ryan starts to walk right past us to go up on stage. I reached out and touched his arm to stop him (nice soft leather jacket, huh Rho!) and said Hi Ryan, he stopped and said hi, and Rhoda introduced herself first (I forgot what she said but he remembered her from somewhere and he gave her a hug) then I said hi, I'd met him at Kean and said "coolest mom ever" and he said oh yeah! (there's a story there -- another time) and gave me a half-hug. Then he said he had to go up on stage but was definitely going to be out after the event and would talk to us then. I said good 'cos I had stuff I wanted to talk about. But then after the event we looked for him, and even asked the event manager, and he said he'd left right after he'd performed. Of course we were disappointed.

But Ryan is a sweetie -- he tweeted yesterday afternoon "if you were there and we didn't get to chat because they rushed me out to an interview please let me know."
So I like to think that was meant for me and Rhoda LOL!

The main event was very entertaining as well. Katie Couric interviewed Nicole Wallace and Hillary Rosen about a number of topics, mostly all related to women's issues. A lot of politics since Nicole worked on Sarah Palin's campaign, and how women were treated during the campaign -- racial awareness was very high but gender issues still low on the awareness scale in their opinion. I've included a couple of vids I took as well, 'cos we're all smart women and you would appreciate. One of my favorite lines -- what women do is not juggling, it's triage.

Just came back from a "surprise" Ryan Star performance on NYC's Lower East Side. Dalocksta was there too. 3 things you can be sur of: death, taxes, and Ryan Sotr will NEVER disappoint. He was on fire tonight.

I love Ryan star. Breathe is my favorite song by him, at the Yankee game on Thursday I noticed they played breathe before a commercial break. I was shocked and so happy Smiling I started screaming and my family just looked at me like I was crazy

I really like Ryan Star, his voice is so grasping and his music is very good. Smiling Although I have not seen him live I have listened to live recordings. He is really good live and that Breathe performance with David is absolutely beautiful! Can't wait for his album to come out!

San Francisco & Seattle Shows Cancelled

Ryan Star strained a vocal chord recently performing. He will unfortunately need to cancel his upcoming shows in San Francisco and Seattle as doctors orders are to allow his voice to heal this next week. He is expected to make a full recovery and looks forward to playing these cities at a later date.[/quote]

Thanks for the thread about Ryan! He and his band are in a league of their own. His song Breathe has a very personal meaning to me (about my sister who has been battling her way through her middle and high school years against bullies and much worse). Here is my recap from the show of his I went to at Gullifty's in Harrisburg on August 21st, 2009:

Give it 1/5Give it 2/5Give it 3/5Give it 4/5Give it 5/5.

.So I've decided to post my recap of my Ryan Star show here. since this seems to be the only thread about him. I think it's important us DC fans support him (and all other openers) as well.

*Note: before reading this, some of you may know I do not get starstruck. I am the person who shys away from the massive groups of fans and would rather hang out or observe an artist rather than go up and stick a marker in their face. I don't like the whole fangirl thing, I personally think it's ridiculous and is part of the reason I don't try to go out to the buses after a DC and band with no name show. ok on to the very long recap:

The club Ryan and his band played (called Gullifty's Underground) is right down the street from my house. The doors weren't supposed to open until 9 and he wasn't supposed to go on till around 11 but there I was walking down there (about a 15 minute walk) to meet my best friend Shaynia at about 8. so I'll skip all the crazy stuff we did before it got dark (like buying pop rocks and acting crazy) and go to the part where it did get dark.

Part 1:

So the Underground doesn't allow you in unless you are over 21 or at least 18 accompanied by someone over 25. I recruited my close friend Kim who is a huge Ryan Star fan and is in her 30s to be mine and shaynia's "aunt" for the evening. We had loads of fun coming up with the story whille we were waiting in the parking lot for her to show up. anyhow I digress. Shaynia and I were sitting on a bench at the front of the restaurant because it was nice out and we couldn't go in without Kim so what was the point in waiting inside.

A few minutes later Ryan came walking out the door (there really is only 1 way to get to the front parking lot, the fact that he was able to do that without have a billion fans behind him is lost on me and I give him major props since he wasn't disguised at all) and he went over to a car where his tour manager was hanging out and started talking to the people in the car. At that time Shaynia was texting her bf and I took my phone out to text my good friend Tyler to see if he was able to go and then Ryan turned around and started walking past us but then stopped and said are you 2 texting each other (that is what it looked like I will admit) and shaynia just laughed (she did know it was him and i think was about to fall over) and I said well yeah cuz that's so much easier than having an actual verbal conversation didn't you know? and he jsut sort of looked at me and started laughing and went along with it (I don't think he was expecting me to be a smart ass) and then he started talking about the mosquitos and didn't want us to get attacked by them so we should go inside and I said no we're waiting for someone and he said oh ok and we had a little random convo and then Dallin (keyboardist) found him along with about 10 fans and he said see ya inside and walked away to go sign some stuff. I think Shaynia and I both squeed and talked about a mile a minute after that. we were sooo excited and then she said to you didn't ask him to sign your blend (I made a fanart of Dave and Ryan performing Breathe) and I said that never even crossed my mind. I was actually a little bummed I forgot because I brought it specifically to get him to sign it since that song means everything to me (very personal, it is exactly what I tell my sister as she struggles immensly through middle and now high school with people being so cruel to her) and I figured once inside we wouldn't be allowed anywhere near where they were setting up and stuff.

Part 2, inside the underground (yes it really is underground):

Once inside the rules were that we were not allowed to leave Kim's side since she was "in charge" of us. now mind you, I'm 18 I don't like being told someone is in charge of me. this meant we had to follow her into the bathroom (like Ryan I can be a germaphobe so this was not the place I wanted to be at all) the bathroom could hold like 6 people and there were 10 of us in there including Dallin. I was standing behind her (didn't realize who it was at first) and noticed her tattoo on her back and said something to her and then showed her mine. Hers absolutely amazed me it was really pretty and then she started talking about how Ryan pisses her off cuz he won't wear his seatbelt and we were laughing and stuff and then Kim came out and I told her have a good show and we left. As it turned out they pushed tables to either side of the room to make a floor in the middle and then the bar is in its own world at the back of the room. We went in and sat on the left side where there were empty tables and not a lot of people or cig smoke. As it turned out that was where the band was setting up their merch table and their guitars and stuff. Ryan's merch table is literally a box that opens up and has the stuff inside it lol. His tour manager ran the table and she was very nice, I asked her if it was ok to sit where we did and she said oh yeah it's fine (we sat at a table next to where Artie was putting his guitar together). and so since we were talking to her Shaynia and I decided to buy CD's. So we went and sat back down and i ended up sitting next to Dallin and Ryan's wife Hallie (the tables were really close together) and she remembered me and said hi and introduced us to Hallie who is so sweet by the way, she reminded me of Jenny. I turned back to Kim and started playing with her cd she brought to have signed (it was a cd from his old band Stage that she got when he played there over 7 years ago) and I guess he noticed it and i feel this tap on my arm and him say you've gotta be kiddin let me see that. so I handed it to him and said it's hers and pointed at Kim and he was like come here and he got his band and everyone gathered around and was showing it to everyone and then very sweetly signed it for Kim and she was so happy about that. Then I relized I almost forgot again so I said wait Ryan would you mind signing 1 more thing and he said of course not! and so i showed him the art i made and he looked really impressed (kind of like how David looks at something a fan has worked so hard to make) and signed it for me while I told him what the song meant for me and he seemed really humbled by that. so then we said bye to him and started talking and squeeing again.

Part 3 Artie and the story of Neal:

If you've stuck with me this long it's your lucky day. Artie told me and Shaynia a very funny, slightly gross thing about our buddy Neal. Artie came over to Shaynia because she wanted to say hi to him and apologize for laughing at him outside and so he was talking to us and Shaynia mentioned how his hair reminded her of one of our close friends who is a drummer. He says well I haven't washed it in days so that's prolly not a good thing and I said you're on tour that's cool and he said well at least I washed it more than Neal ever did and I said oh really? and he said yeah Neal hated to do laundry so he'd go weeks without doing it. I'm sorry Neal I swear we weren't laughing at you : )

Part 4: the show

The show was amazing. We went up and were actually sitting on the stage for a bit until they came out to set up. I felt bad though because they did not have a lot of room to work with and i felt in the way so I kept apologizing to the crew guys. I will just say the epic parts of the actual show. He played Breathe acoustically which was breathtaking. I never thought i'd cry at another concert (cried during LOTM at dickinson) but there I was feet to the stage, shoulder to Arties mic stand with tears in my eyes. He made eye contact with every single person and during that song at the I believe 2nd repetition of the chorus while he was singing it some people started singing with him and so I started singing it really softly along with him and he looked over at me and gave me the biggest smile and I just about fell over. That was the happiest most memorable moment I have ever had.

I did get hit with Artie's mic stand and poor Artie broke his dog tags when they got caught while he tried to catch Ryan's mic when he threw it. A few of us right by Artie were looking for the rest of his tags and helping him out before we went and tried to grab setlists. I got Ryan's setlist and was so happy I did because some lady very rudely nudged me out of the way and asked Dallin for hers. Shaynia got Dallin to sign her CD and Dallin even apologized to me for the rude lady and that was when she had their tour manager give me Ryan's.

Part 5: After the show

Not much here. Shaynia ran up to Ryan and asked him to sign her CD and he asked us if we enjoyed ourselves and we all said hell yeah and he asked if I needed a tissue and I said no I'm good. He said he liked getting that reaction out of an audience. As he was signing Shaynia's CD he asked if we were on the mailing list and I proudly chimed in that I was and was also on rstar.net and his facebook and twitter and he thought that was very cool and asked me to post the gigography when I got home and said sure. All this time I was standing there with my little setlist folded in my hand (I was bumming out because I didn't get a guitar pick) and he grabbed the setlist out of my hand and signed it. Now mind you I never asked him to sign it, never even thought of it, he just signed it. When he grabbed it I said oh thanks! and got all happy again.

Thanks so much for reading my long winded recap. I think it's important we as fans always treat the artists as respectfully as possible. When Ryan was talking to us I could see other fans in the merch line kind of annoyed but because the 3 of us were ourselves, respectful, and enthusiastic about not just him but Dallin and Artie he seemed to respect us more and talk to us more than if we had been following him down to the chinese place down the street (saw about 6 fans do this and his wife looked annoyed that that happened)

I agree with Kaydeecee, I love the "Breathe" duet. I listen to it non-stop. Does anyone know when Ryan's new album 11:59 will be released? I have heard many dates and can't seem to find anything on rstar.net.

Yes, Scott, Ryan Star is superb! I just LOVE him! Saw him so many times since April, and honestly, he has a great band and is every bit as good an entertainer and singer as David. That is saying a lot!

I wouldn't call myself a huge fan, but I really enjoyed Ryan sets when I saw him open for David. My favorite Ryan song is definitely "Brand New Day, but I also love "Back of Your Car" and "Psycho Suicidal Girl." I vote for Breathe over at Yes.com sometimes. Not sure how much of an effect it has on radio play, but at least it's something.

I'm glad to see a Ryan thread and to see so many DC fans who have embraced him. I have been a fan for a very long time as most of you know and most of the time I prefer to hang back and watch as you all discover his music and want to learn more about him. I never imagined that so many would end up liking Ryan and want to follow his career once he left David's tour. I remember those days when I found out Ryan would be opening for OAR and subsequently David at the Atlanta jingleball. I completely freaked out and nobody could understand. If you all could find any of those threads it would be hilarious to see me begging for anyone to give a recap or take a photo of Ryan. All I wanted to know is what songs Ryan was playing. I never in my wildest dreams imagined Ryan and David would hit it off and Ryan would not only tour with David but share the stage with him and sing Breathe. I never expected anyone to be interested in cellcasting Ryan or providing wonderful youtubes. Thanks from the bottom of my heart all of you who facilitated my interest in Ryan and helping me experience your experiences at his shows. I know he isn't for everyone and never wanted to push him on the DC fans but he did a great job of selling himself and I almost had no work to do! But I am always an open book and please ask me if you have any questions or want links to things. Ryan has a very long history with his old band Stage and many, many wonderful songs that I would love for you all to hear. If you like his music now I really encourage you to check out the self titled major label album he put out with Stage, it should be available on Amazon and I think itunes as well. Stage is a part of who he is and where the music comes from and his musical history is not complete without those songs. But again, I just thank you for providing the recaps and youtubes because frankly a lot of fans I know from back in the day do not share anymore.

KDC, yes you can request Ryan on your local station. Make sure it is the Hot AC station as that is the format he is promoted to. I honestly have no idea what is going on with Atlantic and I've been waiting 3 years for his album to come out. He finished recording it over a year ago and they keep delaying it. At this point I honestly don't know if it will ever come out but Ryan keeps saying it will so I won't question him. He's gotten a lot of fantastic TV promo so hopefully that keeps up.

I'm with you man. I only discovered We Might Fall because when David announced that Star was opening for him I googled him, and the vid for We Might Fall was the first thing that came up.

I love the duet version of Breathe so much. Ryan was the opener at both AC and NoHo and I think he benefits from the more intimate spaces, cause he POURED himself out on that one.

Does it help at all to request the song from one's local stations that haven't added it? And what's the deal with Ryan's label?
