Time of My Life aka Magic Rainbow aka the Ninja aka....

Ahhh, Magic Rainbow. Did anyone have any sense when DC premiered Time of My Life (aka, Magic Rainbow) that it would be more than a wonderful memory of a great Idol win? And, man, it was a great moment, wasn't it?
Here's Alan Sepinwall on that moment:
- 9:59: The accountant certifies the results, Ryan wishes them both luck, and the winner, by 12 million votes, is David Cook!!!!!! Sorry, gonna be impartial for a second. Yes!!!! A total breaking-the-mold choice, proof that you can show actual musicianship and creativity on this show and succeed, and, perhaps best of all, a repudiation of Randy Jackson.
- 10:01: David fighting back tears. his mom and brother are on stage with him. David calls all the finalists up as he sings the actual coronation song, "Time of My Life." The song is predictably artery-clogging, but Cook's emotions and his affection for his fellow contestants (including David A., who's taking his defeat admirably well) are so palpable that, like Fantasia on "I Believe," I'm okay with it. Justice is served. How 'bout that?
In fact, the Rainbow became the best-selling and longest-Billboard Hot 100-charting coronation single ever. This is despite some naysaying:
- Clay and Kelly are very close in the combined totals, and are likely to stay on top. David C. is likely to surpass Taylor on this list (that should happen in a couple of weeks), and he might have a shot at Ruben and Carrie, but picking up another 360,000 downloads to beat Kelly has to be considered an outside possibility.
Well, he got that wrong. Interestingly enough, that blogger was replaced less than 6 months later. Hmmm.
Here's one reviewer's take:
- Seriously, who, in 2008, sits down with a piece of paper and a pen and comes up with "magic rainbow"? . . . The good news is that Cook's elegantly grizzled growl is uniquely suited toward making a mess like this work. [T]he way he builds from the gurgley snarls on the intro to a big drawn-out lung-busting note at the end shows that he's already a pro. And the song's construction is time-tested big-payoff power-ballad; I especially like the backing-vocal ahh-ahhs on the chorus. That Cook can make anything of this song is a minor miracle, and it bodes well for what might happen if Clive Davis starts throwing actual good songs his way....
Anyway, this review is the source of the "eminently grizzled growl" and "gurgley snarl" descriptions frequently referenced on CJT. It may, or may not, be a coincidence that, just over a month later, this reviewer left the Village Voice. Seriously, y'all. Don't mess with the Rainbow. [However, he seems to be okay with hilarious lyrical rewrites.]
Artistically, the Rainbow benefited from DC's voice in all of his incarnations, but for me, AcousticDave Rainbow is the best kind of Rainbow. While the one that lives in my AcousticDave playlist is from the Taste for the Cure, I have to cite Walmartian Magic Rainbow as a truly revelatory moment.
And then came the Olympics. The Rainbow closed the Beijing Opening Ceremonies---how cool was that? The next day, I found myself randomly singing it. And then The Rainbow summed up one of the greatest winning moments in Olympic history.
The Rainbow got DC on Oprah as singer of the song of the 2008 Olympics. [And if Oprah says it, then it must be so.] The Rainbow appeared on the ESPYs, and so many other sporting events that (notwithstanding the Rainbow's demands), I can't fit them all on here. And the Rainbow has his romantic side, too, as demonstrated by this waltz on SYTYCD. And tons of montages, especially at the end of the year and now with graduations. And Magic Rainbow just won the song of the year award from a major songwriting association.
This week marks Magic Rainbow's one-year birthday.
But it also marks his 52nd straight week as a charting song. That's right: 52 weeks on AC (including 15 as #1), plus 20 weeks on HAC (peaking at #7), plus 12 weeks on HAC Recurrent, plus 18 weeks on Top 40, for a total of 102 charting weeks from 5/21/2008 to 5/20/2009, blowing right past every prior coronation song. He has had over 1.775 billion audience impressions on US radio and over 242,000 spins, and he hasn't stopped yet.
As an additional birthday present to the Rainbow, aided and abetted by his personal graphic designer, MsDarcy, here's a chart commemorating his radio accomplishments:
Yeah, Rainbow. CJT <3<3<3 you.
Keeping up with Magic Rainbow has been fun. He has major backbone, the kind that he absolutely refuses to stick in some girl's purse. He has massive amounts of weaponry, serious ninja skills, and a willingness to kick ass as needed. All of this with an upbeat tempo and DC's growly voice. Tracking him may require a certain amount of ducking, bobbing, and weaving, but you've gotta respect that stubborn song, who was told that he couldn't make platinum, get radio play, or survive past June 2008, and ignored it all.
Happy birthday, Magic F***ing Ninja Platinum Rainbow. And many happy returns.
@magicrainbow: Damn, I really *am* awesome. Cavort, cavort, cavort.
* * * *
BTW: Each of the above charts can be "clicked" to get a larger version. I also think that the plan is for them to be linked in the CJT OP. And big huge thanks to MsDarcy.

ToML made an appearance on Dancing With the Stars (although, without DC's voice, as we know, it is not Magic Rainbow). Magic Rainbow also graced the finale of SYTYCD Canada's finale this season.

Happy Glorious Day for the magic rainbow, Reggie Hamm, and David.
Time for a celebration...*******throwing multi-colored confetti****
I've said it before--but it is worth repeating. This is a special song with great lyrics BUT it is the passionate delivery by David' s voice that sells it.
This may go down in history as the best AI coronation song ever! Think it is going to be hard to top.
I am so happy for David and Regie. It brought tears to my eyes when I read it. Here's to many, many more.

I've heard it all before and I won't preach it anymore,

Magic + (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo & Violet) + Regie x DC = "TOML", a.k.a. "REAL WINNERS" !
That song...that song just won't die. And apparently, neither will this thread.
Awesome.

SONG OF THE YEAR
“The Time of My Life,” written by Regie Hamm

I love this song, and have always loved it. It brings back wonderful memories of David Cook winning AI which I will never forget. How could anyone forget that night? The best night on television EVER.
Bumping this because our dear Magic Rainbow got a "whole lotta love" on the AGT finale last night. They played the entire song while looking back on the highlights of the season. They actually omitted the lyrics for some parts (first and second verse and part of bridge) but kept the instrumentals.

Bringing this over from CJT:
Magic Rainbow has passed 2 billion in AI. That's right, the song that was supposed to be dead in the water in July 2008 has passed 2 billion in AI, in August 2009. Quite a nice way to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Magic Rainbow's Olympic experience, right? C'mon, y'all. You know you want to cavort. Well, at a minimum, the Ninja wants you to cavort, and he has retrieved all of his weapons back from Windy. [Pauses while she waits for the dancing and such to end.]....

Popped in here to check on a stat and figured, hey, the Rainbow would like for his thread to be bumped. Also, we just passed the one-year anniversary of his Olympics triumph [ducks], er, triumphs, so celebrate, y'all.

Long live the magic rainbow.....
Happy Anniversary, Rainbow. One year ago tonight, you made my jaw drop open when you were on the opening of the Olympics. They loved you so much (as they should) that they used you again later in the competition.
Hugz the Rainbow!
Awesome vid of David reacting to Ryan's singing TOML. I think that along with some embarrassment, it also looked like David was trying not to cry. Great vid.
TOML is my guilty pleasure. His voice is just so gorgeous in that recording and the sentimentality of remembering the Win, ah, nothing could be better.
And David's POV during Ryan's serenade. He just looks embarrassed to me. Hee. I'm definitely over the rainbow watching this!

Ryan singing TOML to David was so great. He truly is talented and David seemed to like his version. lol
I listen to this song and sing along with it quite often now. David makes you feel the meaning of the song even if it's a simple message in the song.
Magic Rainbow makes the Tewer (but it's not sung by David Cook)

I appreciate TOML much more now. I do believe that David Cook worked a miracle, but this song together with David is a winner. Something comforting about David's voice. He is my favorite artist of all time.

University of Oklahoma Sooner Athletics used Magic Rainbow for their "Best of 2008-2009" highlight reel; it's a little over halfway through this "Sooner Sports Weekly" video (um, if anyone can separate the clip out from the rest that would be great). They'll be showing it at all of their "Sooner Caravan" stops this summer. http://www.soonersports.com/genrel/061509aaf.html

Happy Birthday again Magic Rainbow! I listened and sang along today ..
"Watched all the bitterness burn"
Happy Belated Birthday, Magic Rainbow! I actually just listened to TOML the other day for the first time in a few weeks and just been lurking around to this thread but being too lazy to reply to it. This song will never get old for me and will always have a place in my heart and on my Ipod. I have listened to it almost 100 times since last year. Even though it mentions a magic rainbow it is still David's winning song and represents a special time in David's life. It is much better than the "hurricane, mountain" song aka "No Boundaries" but I still like NB because I like Kris too.

Magic Rainbow I am here to wish you a belated Happy Birthday!! Sorry that I haven't posted sooner....but I am a lurker and a little shy, lol.
However, I know you are happy to accept birthday wishes anytime and for as long as your devoted fans give them!
I have never heard you on the radio*ducks*; I'm sorry I listened to the wrong radio stations.
However, I bought you and have listened to you umpteen times. You always make me happy when I re-watch your birth on youtube *hears purring*
I bow down before your greatness....o multicolored one.
Long Live the Rainbow!!
PS Rainbow, have you thanked Folk Fan for your amazing thread and graphics?
I had a dream about this....really... lol
Endeavour’s 7:17 a.m. launch time Saturday, June 13. (Because I love this kind of stuff)
You, ToML aka Magic Rainbow aka "the Ninja" were taking the elevator up to enter the spacecraft waving at all your fans. You didn't have a space suit on, but it was O.K. because it just added to the brilliance, and you absolutely stood out. You were sporting a space helmet. You had a copy of DCTR under your arm, and Life on the Moon was playing. You were very, very happy.
Happy Birthday, Magic Rainbow. I wish we could make this happen for you. Now that would be a nice birthday present. =)
ETA. Take off postponed June 12 due to gas leak. Whew. Glad it was just a dream.

Brian at Idol Chatter has done updates on the Coronation Song sales and airplay.
Magic Rainbow, despites his relative youth, is #1 in sales and #2 in airplay. NOTE regarding the airplay stats: Brian is using a different number, perhaps monitored stations, that gives lower spins and audience impression for the songs than what you see on the Quickcut. So, he comes up with 1.4 billion for the audience impression for Magic Rainbow, while the Quickcut says that the Rainbow has over 1.8 billion. [AMLT similarly reflects a lower AI than does its Quickcut.]
Magic Rainbow has been listed as Top Ten College Graduation song:

Meanwhile, this article tells the story of why the graduating class chose TOML:

Heh, that's awesome, Zip Zag.
The OP has been edited to add gueseppe's awesome lyrical rewrite and a couple more stats.
I was talking to my mom the other day and I acutally said "Magic Rainbow" instead of TOML, and then refered to "No Boundaries" as "Hurricane" and then mom brought up Avalanche. It was an interesting conversation. She kept telling me that Magic Rainbow was not the name of the song, and I just kept telling her it was...
I have officially retitled TOML to "Magic Rainbow" on iTunes...and got a little carried away. A bit big, sorry.
Bad rainbow karma maybe?
I had fun trying to decide which TOML to bump the thread with this morning. It was almost to page #3... tsk tsk tsk!
I don't know, wurdnurd---I saw it, too.

Why was my last post in this thread deleted? I know it posted.
Go Rainbow!
James_Padfoot: In a battle of rainbows and BBS, who would win? -cage fight with jello-
I'm relatively certain that Magic Rainbow would win, because he'd be willing to play dirty. Maybe distract BBS with a six-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon.
@magicrainbow: Rub it in, why dontcha, Dave? Growl. I'm going to get Dublin to eat your new ipod.
In which you actually can hear David Cook (Northampton) say "Magic Rainbow"
story behind this from aheadofstraight on DC42:
Also, someone held up a sign that said "You were my prom song" and he said something to the effect of, "When I started playing music all those years ago, that is not a sign I ever pictured seeing." (I'm sure someone recorded!) Then he asked which song. Um duh, Dave? Then he said something like, "Well you won't be hearing any magic rainbows here tonight!"
Happy Birthday Magic Rainbow! Your staying power on the charts is an inspiration to us all!!!!
*raises glass of rainbow skittles as a toast*
So now that you're older MR, I think its time to talk about sharing. You are an amazing leader. You took your brothers to school and you protected them. It isn't your fault that BBS keeps getting into trouble - he's just a party animal.
You are an amazing Platinum song and will be sung for years to come. It is time to help Windy up the charts just as you helped Zenny. Zenny will be platinum by fall. Permanent has made its mark and we fans will help it with the charity drive.
But Windy gets lost every time he goes to CHR. He can find his way to HAC just great. He's even gone to AC by himself and he's brought the correct change home. Every time he goes to CHR, we hold our breath. He needs your charm, your guts, your connections. Can you help him out?
Happy Birthday, 'cos this is the time of your life, Magic Rainbow!
