No, he wasn't famous before Idol. Lots of people release albums but aren't famous. Analog Heart only sold about 1,100 copies prior to David appearing on Idol.

In a 2008 interview, David Cook encouraged his fans to share his 2006 indie album, Analog Heart, by making and passing out copies of it. So, you may download the album guilt-free (i.e., with the artist's permission) here: Analog Heart. Original copies of the album are rare, but sometimes come up for auction, and sell for hundreds of dollars.

Analog Heart is David's solo album that he released before he auditioned for American Idol. It was available for purchase on Amazon, but then Amazon pulled it while David was on American Idol. It hasn't been available for legal download since then.
