WANT TO BE HEARD? TAKE A LEAF OUT OF AMERICAN IDOL DAVID COOK'S BOOK: IF YOU'RE GIVEN A PLATFORM, USE IT.

In May 2008, David Cook became the seventh American Idol, and its first winner with a rock background. In the week that followed, he broke Bon Jovi's record for the most debuts on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart. Two post-Idol albums later, Cook joins the list of what happened to the first five male winners: Dropped by their record label after weak album sales. For Cook, however, American Idol has kept him on the music scene, letting him premiere his newest song and bringing him all the way to Singapore – his first time – to promote the upcoming 12th season of the show. Here are the seven things he did right.

[1] HELP THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU
American Idol suffered its lowest-ever ratings for last season's finale. It's now counting on rock stars like Cook to draw in viewers. "I love my relationship with Idol," Cook says. "They offered me an amazing platform. And as an ambassador, I want to help the show move forward because it's a great launching pad for artistes."

[2] NEVER LOOK BACK
Cook's Idol victory that gave him that proverbial big break. He has never looked back since. "I love what I do, honest to God," he says. "I've had so many odd jobs in the last 15 years. I was a mascot for an old country restaurant – dressed up as a bee. I've cleaned movie theatres, been a bartender, painted apartments... this is the best job I've ever had."

[3] IF YOU'RE GIVEN A PLATFORM, USE IT
Last season on American Idol, Cook performed his latest single, a break-up ballad titled The Last Song I'll Write For You. He revealed later that it was done on his own, without a record label. Judging from the standing ovation he received for the song, a comeback can't be too far away. "To go back and have the song received that way... it was huge," Cook says. "To talk about creative freedom, I now have the ability and resources to try things I never could before."

[4] LOOK GOOD, BUT DON'T TRY TOO HARD
"Not thinking about the fact that I'm exercising is usually the best way to go about it," he says. "So I play softball, go swimming, play racquetball or tennis. Routine and I don't get along, but I try to do something active every day – I really do."

[5] LOVE THE STAGE
Confidence is needed to grace any public platform. But for Cook, it's like becoming a different person. "I'm more comfortable on stage than off it," he explains. "There's something very powerful about being on stage, playing music and feeling like you've got the audience in the palm of your hand. But off stage, I'm just a goofy, shy guy."

[6] BE VULNERABLE, HUMAN
Cook still hasn't gotten past being nervous – and that's a good thing because it makes him more approachable. He reveals: "I chew gum on stage. I've swallowed gum a few times and I've accidentally spit it out occasionally. I try not to when I'm recording, but I chew gum about 50 to 60 per cent [sic] of the time when I was recording my last album. So, if you ever hear chewing sounds..."

[7] WORK HARD AT YOUR CRAFT
Cook wrote 86 songs for his last album This Loud Morning. Only 12 made the cut. He says: "I may write less for the next one... hopefully, not more."
