So many people have said what I'm thinking and feeling. I just wanted to add that I think Kiss on the Neck and Breathe Tonight are great songs too. I'm wondering why they were bonus tracks.
The thing that's cool about DCTR is that I hear some AH DC and even a little Axium DC on this album. As I've pretty much given up on record reviews and reviewers, I've pretty much focused on how this album compares to DC's pre-Idol career. During Idol and immediately following Idol, I became such a big fan of AH, Axium, and, to a lesser extent MWK that that's where my head is at while listening.
You can hear DC's roots as well as the polish. I wish the lyrics were more DC. They're a little too smooth. DC got me used to figuring out his lyrical word puzzles and I kind of missed that. However, there are enough big words in there to make me smile.
[e.g., "Break your neck for some substance
This is temporary sanity, an exercise in vanity
So long to the ordinary day
Wrought with fictitious tales of how there’s any other way"
Sorry; I had to have it all. :-)]
Also, you can hear some MWK in there with Neil on guitar. I can't remember another guitar player where I instantly knew it was "that guy" on guitar specifically.
It's weird, just like on the show, it doesn't even seem appropriate to compare DCTR to other Idol albums. I see it as an album from the man himself. IMHO, DC is the first real artist from that show, not a singer or even a star, but a musician and this album represents him well. Even though he is a singer and a star .... you get my point.
I am totally stoked about the next album (I know, jump the gun much?!) because I want to hear DC, Andy, and Neil without all these co-writers, talented though they are.
The solo tewer is going to be amazing!
