Leaning toward the doors. I hear the faint sounds of soundcheck. Deana looks at me, "Is that....?" she begins before we both look wide-eyed, disbelieving, at each other. "Nah, he wouldn't perform 'Permanent' tonight." We half-laughed off the possibility of seeing this heart-wrenching, emotional song performed live for the first time.

The idea of the trip to Columbus, OH for the Jingle Ball show began innocently (if hilariously) enough:

"We're driving to Columbus. Wanna come?" the email read. Stunned, I simply stared at the screen and then laughed.

Neal & Kyle Stole Our Cab!

So, there I was gifting the album to our overseas friends, and I get the call, "The band! They're here! They're in Times Square! Neal said he'd come out, and he did! They're all here!"

(They had all come out at midnight to buy the CD at Virgin Megastore, where we were all lining up, to support David.)

Throw on some warm clothes, try to pack what you're going to need for a cold, all-nighter in Times Square and hoof it out the door asap.

Neal, Andy, Joey & Kyle were all milling about and spending LOTS of time with the fans.

David Cook recognized as a leader in the fight against cancer

He looked at the framed letters, thanking him for inspiring such a large movement in support of the fight against cancer, blinking away the tears and wiping them away before they fell. He missed one, lone tear that fell slowly down his cheek. He looked up into his mother’s eyes, for courage, for understanding, for strength, and they shared a knowing smile.

What was that big gift David got after Good Morning America and how did it all go down?

Why I'm a Fan

The musician, the singer, the performer. The ARTIST. The man. The inspiration.

I had been in David's corner since the first day I saw his audition. The faux hawk, the argyle, the voice. As soon as I heard “Tommy used to work on the docks,” I thought, “Whoa. This man can SI-ING!” LOAP will never be the same for me; no one will ever be able to sing that song and hold a candle to David Cook. (Sorry, Bon Jovi. You were my first, but not my eternal.)

So, I tuned in every week to see what this Midwest rocker was up to, rooting for him and cheering him on, hoping he would at least get a fair shot despite the fact that he wasn't the typical contestant. He did so well, clearing standing out among the rest of the contestants.

And well, he continued to follow his heart, too. David sang my most favorite song ever – “Innocent” by Our Lady Peace. He stuck to his instincts and performed the song that he felt most inspired by, and he knocked it out of the park.

That week, I discovered his pre-Idol work and fell into the world of David the Artist. Musically, it was obvious throughout the season that he had an ear unlike many others. He could arrange almost any song in a truly unique fashion. His stage presence was captivating. It was so obvious that his ten years of hard work, toiling away working the local Midwest music scene, had paid off. David knew how to work a crowd. But hearing his early work, I came to sincerely appreciate his artistry. Lyrically, he is second to none. The way he crafts a message just takes my breath away. And that is when I became a fan of David the Artist. For life.

Throughout the season, David shared with us a glimpse at the man behind the performer. We saw the articulate, empathetic, respectful, gracious, witty, grounded man that he truly is. David carried himself with such class and grace throughout the competition and into his reign as champion, inspiring his fans in ways that he may never hear about or understand. No one deserves the often over-used title of “Idol” more than David.

There are so many words that run through my mind at a lightning fast speed when I think about his journey: grace, gratitude, RESPECT, pride, bliss, great music, and yeah, a little bit of joy in the moment/journey, too.

So . . .

THANK YOU, DAVID! For.Everything.
