2. Heroes
Although I really like almost all the songs on this record, different songs grabbed me for different reasons. For “Heroes,” it was the intro. First of all, it builds wonderfully, and I can see why David likes to open a concert with this one – it’s a great lights-come-on piece. There’s also a nice little fake-out to it, in that you expect a pretty, mellow song from the dainty guitar in the first couple of seconds, and then the drums come in and it turns into rock anthem power ballad.

Your fan reports ROCK. Like, if they were to be reincarnated as a song, that song would be "Bar-ba-sol." That's how much they rock.

How sweet is he to stick a flower in his guitar in recognition of the people who brought him flowers? Sweet as spun sugar dipped in honey and covered in maple syrup, that’s how sweet.
Live version:
David’s performance of this song bothered me more than HLTW, because I like this song a lot more than HLTW, and I thought that David could have done so much better. I still like David’s arrangement better than the original, which stays on the same note for “lift” and “yourself” on the line “Dare you to lift yourself off of the floor.”

This has nothing to do with David’s performance, but when Paula says (in response to Simon’s “I really hope we’re gonna see you next week”) “we are, we are,” doesn’t she sound like she’s braying?

You know how he waves to his mom and winks at her after his performance? That was when I gave up fighting the David-love. He had me then.
Live version:
Like AIRNIY, this is a song for which I’m glad David didn’t do a studio version. The original song, for all that it’s very pretty, is extremely long, slow, and repetitive. I think that David’s version still encapsulated the beauty of this song, but ended it before it got tedious.

I'm reminded of the host of VH1 who introduced David the week of his video debut, and how she said, "Ladies, keep your pants on." Prophetic?
