I'm a fan (and you should be too) because...the "goof who got lucky" can actually sing!
I'll be honest, I had never watched a single minute of American Idol before this season. I have some pretty specific musical tastes, some might even say a bit snobby, and the Top 40 nauseating crap that AI aims to produce talent-wise is decidedly NOT what I listen to or buy. Then, a friend at work told me that a local guy was doing really well. So I figured if he was even halfway talented, I'd have no trouble supporting his run as far as it would go. Let's hear it for the hometown boy and all! I first tuned in during Year They Were Born week...you remember, right? When he did that unbelievable version of Billie Jean? That was it. Game over. I'd been Cookified! I still didn't like many things about the show itself, but I would vote til my fingers bled to get this guy the AI title. That voice just needs to be heard by as many people as possible.
And finding out he was a "word nerd" was the icing on a very talented cake. As an English major, that little nugget of info truly made him stand out from the pack, for me (for you). Simon thought the "word nerd" label didn't do him any favors on AI. Well, we showed Simon, didn't we? Cowell can bite my well-educated ass. Seriously though, if Dave doesn't learn to properly pronounce "ethereal" ASAP, I promise I will launch a campaign to revoke the "word nerd" appellation...*stomps foot*...KIDDING...I snark because I love (tm the DWoP thread).
Then he came back to KC for the Top 3 hometown visit. He did a couple of songs over at the brand, spankin' Ooh!shiny new Power & Light District, which is across the street from where I work...and also across the street from the new Sprint Center arena where the Idols tour had just been scheduled for a stop during the summer. I made it over to the P&L stage with some co-workers just in time to see and hear him and from that moment on, a true obsession was launched.
Since then, I haven't been able to get enough of David Cook. I've lost countless hours of sleep and skipped lots of meals (probably a good thing, really) watching YouTube vids, chatting with fellow fans on David Cook websites of varying stripes, looking at everyone's pics, reading their stories, listening to Analog Heart and any other pre-Idol David Cook tuneage I come across, and it's been quite a ride.
But more than his immense talent, David Cook possesses that truly rare gift that inspires other people. He leads by example. I had ample reason before but never took the time to get involved with much charity work. That's all changed now.
So thank you, David Cook. I'm a fan because you're an immeasurably talented, compassionate, intelligent, witty man. You make your hometown very, very proud!!
A night to remember
You captured all the high points, Jen. It was a really really special night...seeing some ultra talented musicians do their thang, meeting (even if only briefly 'cause I was totally starstruck) the little bro, and finally meeting some fellow DCOers. I appreciate you guys letting me hang with you for the evening. And nope, no table dancing, ncc1991, so our reputations remain unsullied (I think)! *also waves to KCChiefFan and Angie*
