This is going to be long and probably written in installments, because I have never been asked to put into words exactly why I am David's fan.
The first time I noticed David was the Omaha auditions. When I heard...Johnny used to work on the docks, I was mesmerized. I had never heard a rocker sing acapella before and the raspiness mixed with the genuine emotion left me spellbound. I knew this guy was going to be one of my favorites, even though this was my first season of Idol, so I would have to see how things went. Happy Together is a song I have never really liked, too bubblegum for me, but once again, complete shock. This went on until Hello, I kind of liked Robbie as well, but since he was eliminated my focus shifted directly onto David and boy did he ever blow my mind on this one. I picked up the phone and started voting, not power voting at first, but I threw a few his way. I signed up for the AI forums and met a wonderful group of people, who were thinking just like me. I couldn't put my finger on it at the time, but knew I was hooked. Eleanor Rigby was when the power voting commenced and it didn't stop. Week after week I grew more and more mesmerized by this man I didn't know, except through my televison set. I took the emotional ride with him, tears, anxiety, happiness, and fear. I started supporting cancer charities, looking into the good of people, and trying to live life better in general. I was unsure at first as to whether this sweet, caring person was only a TV persona. After he won Idol and went on tour, his fan meetings only solidified what I thought of him. Then came my turn in Columbus, he treated me like I was the only person standing out at the barricade in the 90 degree heat. He genuinely cared about each of his fans, regardless of who they were.
I then reflected about a week or two later to try to look within and decide exactly what it was about him. It then hit me like a speeding train. It was a culmination of things, he wasn't your "token" rocker by any means. He is a sweet, caring man, who shows his heart through everything he does. He has a little bit of bad boy rocker, as well as a genuine goofball, who can laugh at himself. He is attractive, of course, none of us would deny that, but it is so much more than that. His music makes you feel and is relateable to something each of us have gone through at one point or another and can make you cry at the drop of a dime. His voice reverberates to the very core of you, making you look at music with a whole new perspective. I enjoy music again and I haven't for a lon time, since alternative rock has kind of taken a side seat to rap and bubble gum pop. I am a fan for life and will support him in any career path he decides to take. I will promote him and his music as long as I have the power to do so.
